Rappaport reported on Twitter yesterday that Burgess 32nd birthday was the DAY BEFORE he suddenly decided to come back yesterday and play and thinks that Derrick wanted to spend his birthday with family and friends back home in Mississippi instead of being in camp - lets see - he turns 32,spends his birthday in Mississippi and then the next day suddenly decides he wants to play again?...sounds like this was not a coincidence, just BS delay.

I don't think he was even thinking of retiring, just wanted to get out of camp and hang out with family.

I don't think this was related to Warren's IR.

Yes, Brady set the precedent when he came back the day after the birth of his son...so this IS the most logical explanation.

If he wanted to hang out with family then maybe he should have told Belichick the truth...this retirement thing was hogwash IMO - At least thats what us fans here from the media heard about his 'retirement'

Makes sense. Either way, I'm glad to have him back.

Who knows...my sense is that Belichick wouldn't take something like that so lightly. He was too complimentary to him in the pressed for that to be the case. My guess is that he was dealing with some personal issues.

Does it really matter?

Nope. Glad he's back and passed his conditioning test. We can use him, and I suspect he'll be putting in some quality time for us.

Does quality time mean running a lot of laps?
:D

So he blew us off to hang out with his family? Is this a good thing?

He should be running laps til he pukes every day to make up for missing all those practices.

My bet is he gets his ass cut. I want them to take back the signing bonus money too.

Veterans are different.

With older guys, you don't want them run down.

Besides, BB may have given tacit approval so this meant more snaps for young guys at the two a days.

I can't imagine a guy missing several weeks of TC and a pre-season game and causing all sorts of disruption to his team and garnering all sorts of media attention just to hang out with his family, unless the guy is Brett Favre.

My guess is Burgess was sincerely considering it. Maybe the birthday even changed his mind, realizing he's getting older and his opportunities to do this were limited. Who knows? I am glad he's back though. I expect a big year out of him, and it allows Cunningham to contribute situationally without a lot of pressure.

Ding, ding, ding......... My bet is BB knew about it all along. Didn't want to out and out condone it, so he kept playing the "I have no idea where he is, next question" card.

BS he didn't know. He bashed skulls last year when 3 guys were 20 minutes late for practice in a snowstorm. You think he'd have no problem some JAG 32 year old "no-showing" for 2-3 weeks? No way.

My guess is Burgess let BB know that his (aging) body wouldn't take the full beating of camp and season, so BB gave him a "tacit" pass for the 2-a-days.

No way he was just a "no call, no show".

Totally agree that BB knew all along. Also, why does anyone think Warren heading to IR had anything to do with Burgess? Hiiiiiiiighly doubtful.

Did the other players know that they could skip camp and still show up weeks later without issue? I'd be more interested to hear what TBC knows about the situation.

Think about this...Burgess has yet to make the 53. He's in play along with FAs (Murrell) and rookies. However, I DO think he'll make it. Let's see how he looks in camp and against Atlanter if he's allowed to play Thursday.

I'm just glad he's back, as much of a middling player that he is. I think, by and large, he does his job (favorite saying of the coach) and doesn't make too many mental mistakes. Also, I have to respect Burgess because at least he publicly admitted fault last year for his tardiness during "Late Gate". If he plays this season and gets 5-7 sacks I'd be thrilled,...

It had been reported that Burgess was possibly thinking about retirement, but he shot down that idea Sunday afternoon after his first day of training camp practices.

“I just had a personal situation going on,” said Burgess. “I had to take time to take care of [some things], and me and Bill [talked] about it, and he just told me to take my time and get my stuff together.

“It was basically some personal matters I had to take care of.”

Burgess: 'Personal situation' reason for delay

Apparently, BB forgot he's talked to him. Oh well.

Tempest in a teapot. He's back--Good--

Smacked Hernandez around first day back-- extra good--
