Should Ty Warren have figured out sooner that he needed surgery?

Is there any basis for saying Warren should have figured out his need for surgery months ago?

If he had, he might well have been able to play the second half of the season ...

This is the Key question: if Ty Warren was suffering from a chronic problem in his hip area, as we are now being told -- why not have it taken care of in February?

Surgery then would almost certainly have allowed him to be available for three quarters or half this season.

Unless, something happened in the 3rd practice of TC to severely exacerbate the injury.....

Usually have to wait for most of the inflamation to subside before you can have surgery in any case.

One wonders if warren was at ota's this offseason instead of at college if he would have gotten injured.

How the heck do any of us, who have never met the guy, know enough about his physical state in general and this injury in particular to be second guessing him? How can we conclude or guess anything else unless we are orthopedists who examined the guy and saw his tests, before and after?

Ever wonder why some players take heavily discounted early extensions...it's not always because they're team players or idiots...sometimes it's because they already have reason to believe via nagging concern that they may not make it to the end of a rookie deal viable enough to cash in big time anyway.

Good find w/ the article, Mo. In his presser, BB even said that Ty had had a tough go of it health-wise these past couple of years.

As you point out, based on Ty's health, wear and tear and age he could be cut/traded at the end of the 2011 season and quite possibly looking at a vet-minimum deal at 32 years old if hes not 100% back.

A fair question we'll probably never have answered. I read in the Herald today that it's a bone spur, not a labrum. In that case you'd think it MIGHT have been diagnosed and taken care of during the off-season in time for him to play this year.

Why is it Ty's responsibility to figure out anything about a medical condition?. Unless he deliberately avoided the team's doctors when requested by the Pats, the Patriots org should have responsibly assessed the health value of their asset. It's not like BB and Co didn't know that Ty had 'issues'.

It IS the player's decision whether and when to have surgery, not the team's.

A few athletes put off surgery until late in the offseason so they can have fun -- I think Shaquille O'Neal was guilty of that.

Many more -- after consulting with medical personnel -- are over-optimistic about playing through their injuries, and with 20-20 hindsight later wish they'd bitten the surgery bullet at an earlier stage.

If this had been an issue since 2005 and he's been laboring about it for the last year and a half then why didn't he have the surgery in February or March as opposed to the middle of August. He could have had the surgery, taken his classes, done his rehab and be on schedeule to play this season. Wes Welker he isn't.

The reason he's had bone spurs in his hip for the past 2 years is that he took college courses during this offseason, and shame on him for not shutting it down and having surgery during those seasons when we were all applauding him for playing through pain. Did I miss anything?

Maybe they did and maybe they didn't. There are a lot of what ifs but it sounds like this has been an ongoing problem since 2005 and the solution to the problem is surgery with an expected recovery time of 6 months. The time to make that decision would ideally be after the season is over not in August.

The time to make that decision would ideally be after the season is over not in August.

It does not make sense to think that his classes, which I think were just for this summer, were the cause he did not take the surgery any time in the last 3 or 4 years. More likely, they thought it was never needed until recently.
