Re: Top 10 NFL Coachesof all time

We Do Lists... now that is a credible source of info.

??? John Madden the #2 best coach of all time?
??? Mike Shanahan is the #10 best coach of ALL TIME?
??? Bill Walsh in only #9?
??? Papa Bear Halas doesn't make the top 10?

This list is awful. Lots of mistakes on this list. Parcells and Walsh should be number one and two. John Madden way too high.

It's awful!

Jabba isn't on it! And he has a 9-7 career HC record!!!

Someone help me out.

First, the article says "[Chuck Noll's] playoff record is 16-8 making his the greatest coach in terms of winning percentage in the playoffs with over 12 trips."

BB's playoff record is 15-5. Isn't that better than 16-8?

Second, how is BB's record 15-5 (as reported by wikipedia)? I thought BB's only led the Browns to 1 playoff game and lost?

Great that BB gets recognized, where he belongs, on a list like this, i.e., right behind Lombardi. I might put another HC or two between him and the immortal Vincent, but the author somehow left them off (see below).

But first, John Madden? Madden on the list of the top ten, let alone at number two?

If Ben Dreith doesn't stiff us on the Hamilton call, John Madden doesn't even have the one, lone ring he managed to win.

I have held for a long time that Madden should really be in the HOF as a "Contributor" (given his impact as an Announcer and with his Video Game in expanding the NFL Brand) but would only go in as a "Head Coach," in which capacity he truly does not belong there, based on his short tenure.

He retired at 42 with 103 regular season wins. OK, Lombardi retired (at 56 and in ill health) with 96 wins, but there is the little matter of FIVE League championships (including two SB's). Walsh retired with 93 regular season wins, but, heh heh, those three pesky Lombardi's intrude in the picture.

As for the rest of the list, it has a decidedly SB era bias and should perhaps be so named.

Where are Paul Brown, Curly Lambeau (the kid who wrote this article probably thinks that Lambeau field is named after a Wisconsin Cheese), Sid Gillman and the immortal Papa Bear? Any one of them belong in the top five, with Lombardi and Belichick.

Parcells and Shanahan being on that list pretty much kills whatever credibility it might have been looking for.

He has at least 1 win with Cleveland because he beat us in the '94-'95 playoffs. I believe he was 1-1 there and 14-4 with us but I could be wrong.

On them stats; Noll's % is 66.666% and BB's is 75%.

No I might be wrong; but 75 is bigger than 66!

I agree the list is bad.
Parcells one or two would make your list worse, no matter how else you filled it in.
Actually, I'm exxagerating because its hard to be worse than Madden at #2, but Parcells 1 or 2 is silly.

Personally to me, the top are fairly clear although I am fine with different orders.
Lombardi, Halas, Walsh, Belichick, Landry

I'm OK wih Parcells in the second five with guys like Noll. I can also understand those who put Parcells in the top five; of course no current pats fan is likely to do so.

I think you need to include Noll in the top 5. He certanly belongs ahead of Landry having out done him in that same era.

In no particular order:

Landry
Lombardi
Knoll
Shula
Walsh
Halas
Brown
Gibbs
Madden
Belichick

That seems about right to me.

Look at the teams Parcells coach before he came in and look at when he leaves. He turns around horrible teams and makes them great.

Giants: Super Bowl champions

Patriots: AFC champions

Jets: Close to AFC champions

Cowboys: Got them to the playoff

Exactly my list of top eye-poppers.

#5 on my list is that Paul Brown is below Shanahan too.

The 6th-grade-level English is also noteworthy.

To anybody who would put Gibbs more than slightly ahead of Parcells -- why??

How many rings did Parcells win w/o BB as his Defensive Coordinator?

Zero

Gibbs should be in the top 5, go take a look at the QB's he had to work with, and the coaches he had to battle.

Walsh who is clearly the most influential coach since he came on the scene in SF is also top 5, probably 2.

BB and Lombardi are top 5 for sure.

Shula and Landry are heavily overrated IMO. I would take Shanihan in a heartbeat over either one of those guys. Joke you say? Take a look at Shanihan's record against BB, then laugh.

There are about 15 top guys - the exact order is difficult to figure. However if Madden squeaks onto the list it's right at the end - I say no.

Most people think the Patriots cheated. Look at this guy comment...
 ************, Belichick is third?! Above Bill Walsh, and Shula, and Chuck Knoll?! What a ******* crock of ****.

edit: I decided not to make a list. Needless to say, Belichick wouldn't make the top 20.

I stopped reading after seeing Walsh was ranked #9. He's top 3 with Lombardi and Knoll. I think Belichick can crack top 3 if he wins a couple more SBs.

Parcells, IMO is a better personnel man than HC (although he is a top 10 HC).
