Granted it's only one game, and it's not the same opponent, etc., but I figured it's worth pointing out.

These were Edelman's catches in the 2009 game against the Eagles:

2-10-NE 30 (12:43) (Shotgun) 12-T.Brady pass short left to 11-J.Edelman to NE 36 for 6 yards
2-6-PHI 14 (9:33) 12-T.Brady pass short left to 11-J.Edelman to PHI 9 for 5 yards
2-10-NE 37 (4:10) (No Huddle, Shotgun) 12-T.Brady pass short middle to 11-J.Edelman to NE 47 for 10yards
1-10-PHI 12 (2:51) (No Huddle, Shotgun) 12-T.Brady pass short right to 11-J.Edelman to PHI 9 for 3 yards
1-10-PHI 38 (12:26) (Shotgun) 16-A.Walter pass short middle to 11-J.Edelman to PHI 25 for 13 yards

Now look at his catches against the Saints:

2-10-NE 47 (8:56) (Shotgun) 12-T.Brady pass short left to 11-J.Edelman to NE 43 for -4 yards
2-10-NO 37 (7:24) 12-T.Brady pass short right to 11-J.Edelman to NO 16 for 21 yards
3-5-NE 26 (8:13) (Shotgun) 8-B.Hoyer pass short middle to 11-J.Edelman pushed ob at NE 40 for 14 yards
2-10-NO 46 (6:34) 8-B.Hoyer pass short middle to 11-J.Edelman ran ob at NO 21 for 25 yards.
1-10-NE 20 (2:12) (Shotgun) 8-B.Hoyer pass short right to 11-J.Edelman to NE 42 for 22 yards
3-6-NO 15 (12:25) (Shotgun) 8-B.Hoyer pass short left to 11-J.Edelman to NO 3 for 12 yards

So:

2009: 5 catches, 37 yards, 7.4 YPC, no throws on third down, 2/5 first downs
2010: 6 catches, 90 yards, 15.0 YPC, two throws on third down, 5/6 first downs

Just a tiny bit of improvement. ;)

Yeah but then look at the enormous dropoff with Moss:

Last night:
2 rec, 30 yards, 0 TD

10/18/09:
8 rec, 129 yards, 3 TD

we're screwed :(

Nice - sounds like that YAC is a lot higher - which can really help keep defenses stay honest with a guy like that out there... come up too tight or send an extra guy in at Brady and Edelman OR Welker OR Moss could burn you.

Edelbinkie's step would have out-Welkered Welker last night. Seriously.. how in the world do the Patriots continue to unearth these guys? :D

Would it be safe to say he's learning to create better separation for himself? He's also extremely confident after the catch, which is one of those 'killer' traits.

It's also the pre-season and just one game - but this certainly does nothing to dampen one's spirits about potential offensive production.

Considering what we have in our TEs as well and this could offense could score a ton of points spreading the ball around...

It could be that they're going to need it depending on what happens with the D

Really hope he stays healthy this year, looks even more elusive this year. He's our best PR in my opinion too.

How long do we have him singed up for? First thing that came to mind because it's insane how much he's grown in one year.

Edelman is signed through 2012.

BTW, such information is included in "Miguel's Pages" at the top of this page.

I've stated in other posts that if WW doesn't make it in 2011, JE would haul in 60 balls for 800 yards.

Based on his perceive improvement, he may get that WITH WW in the lineup.

He looked outstanding last night!

He looks much sharper and more polished this year and a lot more confidence, plus hes got that Brady hair thing going :D

Thank you... good to hear.

Well put..

I anticipate that by mid-season Edelman will juke so quickly DB's and LB's will actually see TWO Julians and freak out. The "Edelmanian MindFocker" will be on page 471 of the Playbook. You know, right near the middle...

An interesting sidenote:

Armanti Edwards, from Appalachian State, also expected to be a QB conversion like Edelman, was drafted by the Panthers . . . with the third-round pick they got from the Patriots in exchange for the Panthers' 2011 2.

Here's how his first game went:

3-5-CAR 25 (7:57) 3-M.Moore pass incomplete short right to 10-A.Edwards
3-9-CAR 30 (8:28) (Shotgun) 2-J.Clausen pass incomplete short left to 10-A.Edwards [45-K.Hamlin].
1-10-CAR 25 (2:29) 14-H.Cantwell pass short left to 10-A.Edwards to CAR 37 for 12 yards (22-P.Miller).
3-8-CAR 39 :)22) (Shotgun) 14-H.Cantwell pass incomplete deep right to 10-A.Edwards
1-10-BAL 41 (8:21) 14-H.Cantwell pass incomplete short left to 10-A.Edwards.
2-5-BAL 21 (7:28) 14-H.Cantwell pass short right to 10-A.Edwards to BLT 20 for 1 yard
4-4-BAL 20 (6:41) (Shotgun) 14-H.Cantwell pass incomplete deep left to 10-A.Edwards
1-10-50 (1:30) (No Huddle, Shotgun) 14-H.Cantwell pass incomplete deep middle to 10-A.Edwards.
2-15-BAL 44 :)39) (Shotgun) 14-H.Cantwell pass incomplete short middle to 10-A.Edwards.

In sum: 9 attempts, 2 receptions, 13 yards, 6.5 YPC (1.4 yards/attempt), 1/2 first downs, (1 first down on 9 attempts).

And on STs, here was his best accomplishment:

On a BAL rekick: 4-24-BAL 16 (7:08) (Punt formation) 4-S.Koch punts 57 yards to CAR 27, Center-46-M.Cox. 10-A.Edwards to CAR 45 for 18 yards

I guess finding an Edelman is harder than it looks. :D

Hahahahaha, I wonder if they drafted him because of Edelman.

I love Edelman, but a 3rd rounder is too high IMO to take the QB to WR dice role.

We still need to see more of this year Edelman to see which was better.

Edelman had some great catch-and-runs, stayed in the game a long time, and absolutely shredded some second stringers. He'll be improved this year, and will be a good WR, but let's not get ahead of ourselves just yet.
