Pats 2010 passing game = unstoppable

The hype on Hernandez is out of control. The Patriots haven't had a TE have success in quite awhile, and I can't even remember a TE who could run have success with them SINCE RUSS FRANCIS!!! Ben Coates was a big immovable lug.

Even last night, Hernandez was not often lead downfield, but was doing typical TE stuff, fighting for position, running possession routes. Yes, Hoyer hit him on that beauty 20 yards downfield, and that's what the team needs. But until I see the Patriots O better utilize the TE position, the kid's talent will go into an incubator.

Dave Thomas looks better as a Saint than he did as a Patriot.

lol, agreed completely. Hernandez has done a bit to make a name for himself in training camp and his first preseason game. But the comparisons to Dallas Clark are a little premature at this point. Clark has spent years in the nfl getting to the top of the te class. As good as it is to have a player like Hernandez I think it will take a little more time to develop. Yes I want him to be a rookie sensation just like the next fan, but like Kon I am going to temper my expectations for now.

Now we just need a running game and we'll be UNSTOPPABLE. NO ONE will stop this offense. NOBODY!

I knew I would come home and see atleast one of these threads started. It is way too early to be making statements like this. I actually thought Hernandez struggled a little bit. He didnt do anything when he was playing with the first unit. He played better when he went against the Saints 2nd unit. I am not saying he isn't a good player or that he won't have a good year. I just think he is getting a little too much hype.

Edelman continues to amaze me every game he plays. He is so shifty and always seems to makes guys miss. It would be nice to get him the ball in space and see what happens. I don't know how he will fit in to the offense, whether he is the 3rd WR or just a 4th WR and Welker backup. Tate I think is the #3 WR, I expect a big season from him. It will be interesting to see who the last WR spots go to. I would think it's a battle between Price and Holt. Aiken I see being on the team because of his role on ST.

I think with the additions of 3 TE's and some new WRs this offense will definitely be better than 2009, especially in the red zone, but I think it is way to early to be calling them unstoppable.

I need to see this OL put together a few more impressive outings before I get as excited as you. If they start to fall apart, it doesn't matter if you add Andre Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald to our offense it'll still be like last year's 2nd half go to sleep and pray the defense holds the lead offense. Not only the current OL but what about when the inevitable Neal injury occurs and we struggle to replace his presense. We need more assurance on that interior OL before we can expect an offense even as good as 2004.

As far as the new reciever set I do share your optimism. I think the Pats came prepared to enter this year with not only a promising 3rd option in Tate but even further depth behind him. Last year they struck out on Galloway but the real problem IMO was not having that plan B as Tate was knowingly injured. This year we got Holt and Price who are way better than Aiken. So far so good on that, but again as several pointed out you need more than one impressive night.

I'm also happy about the playcalling and the new smashmouth approach. As I said before I want to see as little spread offense as possible this year, maybe in the 2 minute offense and situations where our offense is out of sync, needs to throw in a wrinkle. I hate it when we come off a well executed, well balanced drive like the opening drive in the NO game last year then follow it up with a 5 wide to start the next drive.

I see nothing wrong with all of us being very exuberant about this team. I, too, believe this offense can be "unstoppable" as long as the O line holds up. The offensive weapons that this team will be able to put on the field, on a consistent basis, primarily the receivers, tight ends, etc... can be almost unstoppable.

Defenses will have a hard time figuring who, and where, to set their coverage.

And, lets not say negative about our running game also...it too can be solid, and it's success will be based on the team demonstrating early success in the passing attack.

This team needs to come out of the gate agressively, maybe passing right from the getgo, under center, shotgun, etc... no huddle, play action, etc....

Use it to establish the strength of the offense and then control the flow of the game by putting up early numbers on the scoreboard, and not field goals.

One of my personal complaints in past couple seasons is that when they get into the red zone, and have first down, say inside the fifteen or ten yard line, they try to ram the ball first and end up with a desparation third down play.

I would rather see this team go play actiion on first down in the red zone.....

And, one last thing, on 2nd and 3rd downs with like 3-5 yards to go, stay the hell out of the shotgun because all they are doing is taking their optiions away by 50% and giving defenses control of the play.

Yes, this team can be almost unstoppable.... but only if they use it the right way, to their advantage.

Very, very excited about the potential of this team.

I just got off the phone with a friend , a Pats fan too, who has never been excited about a Pats team in pre season...UNTIL NOW.....

Some points are valid, others not so much...

It is way too early to even think about calling the offense "unstoppable" because guys that you are counting on haven't proven anything yet. You are depending on 2 rookie TEs in Gronk and Hernandez. Then a Tate who is in his 2nd year, but didn't play much at all last season. You cannot count on guys who haven't done anything in the league to this point.

You seem big on the passing game, but that is what we have done year after year, is be a pass heavy offense. I think we need to use the running game more to set up the pass. Play action to set up the pass to our WRs and TEs could be very successful. IMO we have 5 solid RBs and they should be used more than they have been. Using them more could make our other offensive positions even better.

I think the red zone offensive will be a lot better this season. BB has spent a lot more time in this area during training camp. I think BB will run the ball more in the red zone and look for the TEs. I have no problem with running the ball in the red zone, it can set up a nice play action to one of our TEs.

The 2010 offensive has the potential to be a pretty solid group, but nothing can really be certain now and they are far from unstoppable.

Preseason doesn't mean squat. I worry when we do too well in the preseason.

Don't know if they'll set records like the '07 group but this years passing attack looks like the best we've ever seen here in New England.
Put Moss, Welker, Edelman, Hernandez and Gronkowski on the field/in the red zone.
NO ONE is stopping this offense this year. NOBODY!
(Pssst, this defense is also going to be much better with a Spikes/Mayo combo at the heart of it
This is going to be a really fun team to watch and they're going to win a lot of games.

I really don't think 2007 is going to happen again and if it does, I will be very happy to come back here and eat crow.

In '07 we had the perfect storm- most people thought Moss was washed out and didn't think he would amount to much here, and nobody knew how much Welker would erupt, and most importantly, we completely surprised everyone by going to the spread. It was only the last quarter of the season when teams figured out how to scheme against the spread.

This year is promising- but Gronk and Hernandez have a lot of work ahead of them. Gronk whiffed on a few blocks and so did Hernandez, he whiffed so bad on a goal line block that it effectively negated a Maroney TD, last night.

My one worry about Hernandez is that he plays with a sense of entitlement (someone else said this, perhaps Reiss) and is overtly emotional when things don't go his way. If he keeps up like this, opponents will key on it to take him out of plays, similar to giving Moss a good whack at the LOS to make him quit on plays.

We also don't know how Welker will function at true game speed. He performed pretty well in preseason and in the scrimmages I saw, but there were no live tackling, no jam, and no bump and run.

There are a number of intangibles that have to be resolved before we get too excited.

However, I am more excited about the defense than the offense. I liked what I saw there. I predicted at least 12-4 and I'm sticking with that.

it was preseason and the saints did not overload blitz on Dan Connolly, side if they can keep brady on he's feet then he will throw for a lot of yards

The only way this offense becomes "unstoppable" is if they can actually run the ball to convert third and fourth and shorts. No more of the quick outs to Kevin Faulk out of the backfield (4th and 2) or short passes over the middle to Welker. This team needs to be able to line up with three tight ends and run the ball for 1 or 2 yards when they absolutely have to do so.
How many times during the Super Bowl years (pains me to say it that way, but we're six seasons removed from the last title) did they line up with two tight ends plus an offensive lineman eligible and proceed to run Antowain Smith or Corey Dillon up the gut for 2 1/2 yards on third or fourth and two. Last year we saw too much of Sammy Morris getting stuffed at the line or Brady throwing incompletions or short of the marker.
Last night I saw some encouraging things, and I REALLY liked seeing Brady pass from UNDER CENTER more than in recent years. I don't want the 2007 offense; I want to see the efficient, blood thirsty offense of "The Super Bowl years" that could eat 7, 8, or 9 minutes off the clock almost at will. Those offenses moved the chains with fantastic efficiency.

Truth. Remember the 08 season when Brady went down, that was one of the worst preseasons I have ever witnessed by the Patriots. Then the team, and Cassel actually put together a good season considering the loss of Brady.

Well I wouldn't mind having that offense...

I'm pretty happy with what I saw last night, but as others have said, it was PS game #1, nothing more, nothing less. I think the team has a very high level of potential, but potential isn't always achieved, although I obviously hope it is.

I'm confused, how can one person be convinced that both a) Moss sucks and doesn't try, and b) our passing game is unstoppable?

I'm glad to see this thread posted. It has little basis in fact, but it's all part of the build-up to the regular season and makes the pre-season more fun.

The Saints pre-season vanilla defense didn't test our line properly in the passing game. Our rookie TEs did not impress me. Sure, they've got potential and were steals in the draft, but until they execute consistently against 1st team talent, our offense is pretty similar to last year, except we've traded Mankins for Crumpler and added Tate. Probably the biggest difference is Brady being on his game from the getgo.

So, I'm still worried about our OL, and I'm concerned that the sturdiness of the starting DL won't look remotely like it did in the first quarter last night, when it has to face 4 quarters of a determined rushing attack. I'm really concerned about that.

I never said Moss sucks. I said he dogs it on plays and will never outfight a DB for a ball. THOSE ARE FACTS Moss Pinkhats. But this isn't about Randy Moss. In fact the presence of Moss has been a big negative for Brady at times in recent years. TB looks to keep his binky involved less he starts pouting and TB has been forcing the ball to his binky (see end of Miami game last year) when other guys are open.
Let me revise my original comment.
This offense CAN be unstoppable if Tom Brady utilizes ALL of his weapons and stops focusing in on/forcing the ball to Moss when the play isn't there.
If Tom gets back to "seeing the whole field" this offense will be unstoppable.

I missed your exclusive interview with TB and penetrating analysis of Moss's jump ball opportunities. Could you provide links?

Thanks for your enthusiasm! I think I'll wait a bit before I draw too many conclusions about this year's team.
