Patriots offered Mankins Top 3 Guard Pay

It's increasingly reading like Logan Mankins is receiving some incredibly poor advice from his agent Frank Bauer. Reading Bauer's comments it's easy to infer that the disconnect appears to be coming from exceptionally poor management.

I can't see how the Patriots don't come out of this smelling like roses and Mankins like a fat cow in a field of **** given it's been reported he was to be paid top three guard money with large guarantees.

I forget what the exact quote on here was, but it was something about how the instant he mentions money, it's no longer about keeping your word. That's how I feel right now.

In principle, I agree, but I wouldn't be surprised if the media conveniently ignores the facts and commences with the hatchet job on the Pats regardless. Wouldn't be the first time.

Here comes the inevitable smear campaign and character assassination of Logan Mankins!!

No matter what spin the Patriots and the media try to put out there, the most detailed reports still suggest that Mankins was offered 1/5 lower what the highest paid guard was offered.

Bill Simmons newest article covers a similar situation where John Hannah held out from the Pats, for similar reasons:
Bill Simmons: NFL training camp means holdouts - ESPN

That article also went into how Brady basically got screwed by the Pats because he took a massive discount with his 2005 deal, and the Pats didn't really use that extra money to help keep the core around (like Branch).

On the radio a few weeks ago, one of the hosts recounted how after that 1st championship, when they renegotiated with Brady the Pats still insisted on not paying a paltry $20,000 bonus. In the 2005 deal, Brady never forgot this and made them re-add that bonus into the contract!!

You should ask Miguel what he thinks of Brady's last contract. He certainly enlightened me.

That article is bs. The Colts spent to build a team around Manning and the Patriots didnt with Brady? Dillon, Moss, Welker. Where are the players the Colts went out and got?

Even if it was 20% lower that the highest paid G ever (which I doubt) so. If the team feels that is what he is worth, that is what they feel.

Many would say that is appropriate. Just being a pro bowler doesn't mean he is THE best in the NFL. A good number of Guards are pro bowlers. That's not the issue. By all accounts the Patriots promised to "take care of him" and making him the 3rd highest paid Guard does exactly that. If he doesn't like the offer he doesn't have to, that's his right. But to call the Krafts liars, which he did in his own way, is the act of a piece of crap. Sorry.

It's beyond homerism to just call Mankins a 'piece of crap'.
He has a ton of respect in the locker room, and by all accounts from when he was drafted all the way to now, is a guy who sticks to his principles.
It's not like he's pulling a Revis and holding out with 3 years still left on his contract. He played out the entirety of his crappy rookie deal, while other teams re-upped their key players from his same draft class before those contracts expired.

If it wasn't for the genius of Belichick Mankins would have been drafted in the 2nd round and receive 2nd round money. Still yet he may have been drafted by a lesser team and still not have any recognition for how good he is. He would have already signed his 2nd contract ... probably not for anywhere near what the Patriots offered him.

He's done okay in the NFL ... he got the good 1st round contract ... screw him ... he's dead to me.

Can he play left defensive tackle???

He's a piece of crap (person not player) to say what he said. If he'd said : "The Patriots made a good offer but it's not what I feel I'm worth" then fine.

But to question them personally after making him a monstrous offer is, at best, disingenuous. Have fun on the farm, Mankins.

Perhaps, but if the Patriots did indeed offer him top-3 money for a guard, it's kinda hard to argue that it's not "taking care of him."

I always thought that Belichick traded Seymour because he couldn't pay Wilfork, Mankins and Seymour and decided to pay Vince and Logan.

Vince got a good deal, So did Logan, but he didn't sign.

Sounds like a girl complaining about her husband. Did BB promise to love him forever too?:p ♥ ♥

He got offered a contract, he refused it because he felt he was worth more. Why does that make him a crappy person or selfish?

How many players outperform their rookie contract the way he did and still play it out? Not many...

Exactly. It sounds like the team proposed to use the RFA season as a launching point for a 5 year extension. As long as the guaranteed money is in line, all that does is allow each side to spin the deal the way that works for them and make the cap hits more manageable. Same thing they did with Seymour when they extended him with 1 year left on his rookie deal. He got $6M in signing bonus and the following year an $18M option bonus that was guaranteed. Allowed the team to treat it for cap purposes as a 4 year $32M deal. Allowed Seymour's agent to spin it as a 3 year $30M in new money deal with $24M or so guaranteed. Win-win.

Mankins is getting really lousy advice from his agent, who happens to be Vincent Jackson's agent too. Two of the remaining three holdouts...interesting. Love how he characterizes the player as lost, then adds the comments about the team being old school but things can change... Don't hold your breath Frank.

What you wrote doesn't.

What he said does :

"After the 2008 season, me and my agent approached the Patriots about an extension and I was told that Mr. Kraft did not want to do an extension because of the [uncertain collective bargaining agreement]," Mankins said. "I was asked to play '09 out, and that they would address the contract during the uncapped year. I'm a team player, I took them at their word, and I felt I played out an undervalued contract.

"That's the big thing," he continued. "Right now, this is about principle with me and keeping your word and how you treat people. This is what I thought the foundation of the Patriots was built on. Apparently, I was wrong. Growing up, I was taught a man's word is his bond. Obviously this isn't the case with the Patriots."

How is offering him top three money at his position not "addressing the contract" ?

I guess he may have interpreted it as the new contract kicking in immediately, whatever, again he has the right to say no. But to claim the Patriots (Krafts) don't keep their word after being offered that kind of money is really, really bad. Just say the offer wasn't good enough.

Totally agree. But he did play out the entirety of his long underpaid deal, which he should get credit for. Plus, if he were a 2nd rounder, he probably would have gotten a shorter contract and a bigger pay day sooner.
