Warren looked 10 years younger out there tonight.

I thought he looked really good :)

I thought the starters on O and D looked very good! Just glad football is back :)

RETURN TO SMASHMOUTH FOOTBALL

I like how Maroney lowered his shoulder and leveled one of the Saints secondary. It reminded me of the Kerry Rhodes play from last year.

Mike, did you get the game over there??

No. Not so far as I know, but I don't have Sky TV here in the UK. I'd be very surprised. Murdoch is hugely invested here in football (soccer) so the NFL is the poor relation on his networks.

The game started, anyway, at 12:30 am, which would make it a long night for a pre-season game, so I didn't search for an internet feed. (Shows I'm just a fair weather fan ... :))

Still, I'll be back in the Land of the Free (airport strikes permitting) at the end of the month.

yeah, I was charting Mesko for the first about three quarters and he was averaging 44 yards and change...haven't looked up the final stats yet but he's a good five yards better than our previous punter and gets good hangtime.

I'm surprised more folks haven't commented on mEsko's fine performance. Although I didn't hear any numbers it seemed to me his hang time was really really good; and the coverage team had time to get downfield. I'm think the Pats have a real winner at punter for a change.

Are Sky guaranteed to have the TV deal this season?

Great breakdown, as always. I noticed this thread and it was the first one I ventured into. A couple of things I noticed...

1. Spikes was doing all that you mentioned and then some. Of course, I have to go back and watch the game again on the NFL Network recording that I set up, but I do believe that I saw him audible at one point (though Mayo was calling most of the audibles I saw out there). If this is true, and Spikes keeps it up, it means we should be looking at Spikes as the starter next to Mayo with McKenzie coming in to spell him.

2. Loved the emphasis on the power running game as well. I would have liked to see what they could do with Maroney in with the ones but, in general, there were some good holes opened up for BJGE. The edge blocking seemed to be solid as well. I really liked what I saw Crumpler doing in the running game. He seemed to be driving his man off the ball consistently. Gronk was alright but does need to put some work in. At one point, he almost caused a fumble in the backfield.

3. From looking at the O-Line, one can make a reasonable assumption that they have spent a lot of time in mini-camp and TC working on run blocking. Even though it was only the first preseason game, they seemed to block with a much more vicious streak in that area of the game. Connolly, I thought, has always been a solid run blocker. My questions were in the passing game. In this arena, I thought he did well. Obviously, we need more of a sample size in the passing game. But for tonight, he gets a nod from me.

4. As you mentioned, the fear that we saw last season with Brady is gone. He's stepping fully into his throws and he was pinpoint accurate last night. The renewed focus on the running game also opened up other passing options for him last night. He and Moss seem to be in midseason form already.

5. I stated last week and I'll say it again that if there's an odd man out in the receiving corps, it's probably going to be Holt. There were a couple of points in which I saw Tate take a CB and a safety with him over the top. He made another outstanding catch and kept both feet in for a big time first down. Edelman was also a beast. I don't think I need to say anymore than that. I think we'll be seeing Moss at flanker, Tate at split-end, and Welker and Edelman in the slots. That will be a hard package to cover. If we're going to bring in a fifth option, I would have to think that it would be Hernandez at this point since he saw a lot of time with the first team. Hernandez looked good at some points and completely lost at others. This is to be expected from a rookie though.

6. Defense as a whole looked good. I was suprised at how aggressive they were to start the game. Gerard Warren looked solid at DE and Wilfork was Wilfork. I have to think that if Murrell is the real deal, it would be a great thing for our defense. He was consistently getting into the backfield when he was rushing the passer last night. Spikes was all over the field as well. I've said this before and I'll say it again: his instincts are top notch. His eyes never leave the quarterback's eyes. This is the reason he was in on most of the tackles last night. Speaking of tackles, the first team tackling was excellent. This was highlighted by Chung (who was all over the field as well) wrapped up his man and stopping him a yard short of the first down on third and long. Good stuff.

All in all, I liked what I saw. I loved seeing the running game being the first option and, like I said, it opened up things in the passing game. O'Brien also called a good game. I believe I only saw one Kevin Faulk draw play. But one thing that we should all remember, before getting too pumped up, is that this is the first preseason game. There was a VERY vanilla gameplan from both teams. Also, a lot can change from now to the beginning of the season. But, all in all, this appeared to be a great step in the right direction from the problems that plagued us last season.

5 punts -- 43.4 avg. -- 3 inside 20 -- long 52

NFL Game Center: New Orleans Saints at New England Patriots - 2010 Preseason Week 1

I wasn't able to focus on the game but those strike me as good stats. It looked like he kind of shanked one late but got an awesome roll. Definitely looking forward to seeing this guy more.

Thanks for the summary. Looking forward to actually watching. Leading up to the game there was a lot of media talk about how Tate has done well in camp, but we'll see how he does getting off the line when the DBs are jamming him for real in a game. I take it he did fine?

I didn't see it that closely. I have to watch the game on NFL Network to see how hard/many times he was getting hammed at the LOS. From what I did see, though, the Saints DB's did seem to respect him.

According to Reiss the Pats blitzed 44% of the time...

McCourty is a big hitter, good returner, not sure about his coverage skills yet..

Like our TE sitz...

Spikes is gonna be good..

Mesko will become a cult hero..

Randy Cross was in regular season form last night...

Yeah, I said the same exact thing. I think it's the fact that so many young Gators are on the team. They brought him back to his Gator days.

Well, that's what it says on NFLUK.com. No Five = no Mike Carlson. :( :bricks: If I were in the U.K., I'd be getting out my credit card and upgrading my router ...

A few impressions that haven't been hit upon much here:

Loved Mayo starting things off by standing up the runner in the hole. Looks like he's ready to step it up this year. Spikes will make that a lot easier for him.

Loved the push from the 1st and sometimes 2nd-string DTs on passing downs. OLBs have to be world-class to get the job done when the QB has the freedom to step up. TBC, Murrell, Nikovich, and Cunningham will look a lot better than last year's group, if the DTs shrink the pocket.

Butler's illegal contact penalty has gotten lots of negative press, but what I like about it is that it's a simple thing to correct. He has a simple choice: give the guy a cushion or jam him at the line. His mistake was to jam him 7 yards downfield. Maybe he thought he was about to get beat, but it didn't look that way from the comfort of my couch.

Didn't like what I saw from on the touchdown from Bush. Thought it was Wright failing to set the edge, but looking at the replays, it looks like a coaching or audible error by Mayo. Hard to set the edge from a 3-technique, and only Sanders and Butler were on that side with him. Still the 1st-string DLine looked good overall, even without Ty Warren. If he comes back, things are looking up. Still, I'll have to watch a couple more games before I decide how I feel about the line when they're rotating in multiple players. Pryor got worked, and Wright is too small to hold-up against bigger OL over the course of a full game, even with plays off.

Wilhite looked like a rookie out there, overplaying his position, and alternately getting beat and making a big play. That's about as unacceptable as it comes for a 3rd-year player. Wheatley had some good plays, but there were a couple plays where he wa on the outside of the pile looking in or backing off the play, and just looks small. Edit: I worried about his tackling when watching the game, but I see he led the team in tackles, so maybe I need to go check myself. Regardless, run support won't be a major responsibility of the 4th CB, especially with our group of safeties. This will be an interesting spot to watch. I had thought we'd keep six, but there are too many good developmental players (e.g., Welch, Price) who wouldn't make it through waivers, and with four solid safeties who can cover, this could be the spot to give-up a slot relative to last year.

Edit: A non-analytical note: I loved the play where Spikes was in the backfiled almost on the snap and blew-up the off-back, who unfortunately for Spikes, was not a lead blocker on the play, which left Spikes sheepishly following the runner back to the point of attack having missed out entirely on the nice defensive stop by the rest of the front seven. Kid is fast to the ball. Reminds me of Seau that way. Wonder which of them would win in a sprint.

Up: The pseudo coordinators
O'Brien looked more confident with his tools and seemed more committed to the run (Big +)
If Patricia is the reason the D looked more aggressive last night, I like it. The Pats D will at least be more fun to watch that the last 3 years of the Pees bend don't break.

Down: Potential over confidence in the o-line. I think Connolly looked ok, but he's no Mankins. I just don't know how good Dan will be playing the full season at LG.

Edit: Oops, posted in the wrong thread...but I guess it still applies here too.

Hey I saw a couple of runs to the outside, I don't think they tried that since Dillon left here.

good thread and post ... Brady looks very big out there ... looks like he has even more muscle than before.

However ... if he wants to be intimidating ... he needs to lose the haircut ... it's too Beiber.

yeah he should look like Peyton Manning , the intimidator

I completely agree. Although there were number of positive signs yesterday, it's still very early and it's still preseason.

I think most of my reactions were covered pretty well by most posters. One thing that did come to me was 'if we had Schobel in sub package, that defense would be real bad *****'....of course that thought is more based on want, not need. I thought pass defense(4 DL) was adequate. Nothing to be jumping up and down about but against team like Saints, they were good enough. Run D on the other hand.....Spikes is going to be a beast...and we get other Warren back, that group is going to be stud and strength of Pats D once again.

Kraft sounded wasted during that halftime introduction.
