Second-year player Pat Chung is the projected starter opposite Brandon Meriweather at strong safety, ESPN's Mike Reiss confirms.

Chung played in just 20 percent of snaps last season, but he's been far more confident this time around. Calling to mind Rodney Harrison, last year's second-rounder brings much needed playmaking ability to the Patriots' secondary. He's a player to target in IDP leagues this year.

That's a bit overstated. Both Sanders and McGowan are quality players.

There's little doubt that safety is probably the deepest position on the team.

They are decent at best. Saying they're quality is overstated. All I'm saying is that the Pats drafted Chung for reason and I'm glad he's about to take over.

Sanders is a quality player, as most people who follow the team would attest.

IMO it jumped out right away to me I am pretty sure if you look back at my day one notes(maybe day 2) I made a note about Chung looking more confident and breaking on the ball much more even though he hadn't picked anything or even really broke up much the aggression and confidence was evidence.

Also IMO if this team is going to be a SB contender or even just improve on last year it is last years rookie class that will be the big difference. I think between Chung, Volmer, Edelman, Tate, Mckenzie, and anyone else from last years draft there are a ton of guys who should just be starting to feel comfortable in the NFL and some of them showed alot last year to make you feel excited about their potential. Not to mention guys like Merriweather and Mayo who are just entering their primes. Definitely alot of questions due to the youth but also a lot to be excited about.

I'm one of those guys who criticized the pats heavily for taking chung instead of an OLB like clay matthews, but i hope this kid turns out to be special. i know he can hit like rodney, but what about the other qualities? if he can lay out reggie wayne it might make my season.

i think we were this close to drafting louis delmas, but detroit swooped in with 1 pick ahead of us and took him. we settled on chung.

Who cares about justifying draft position anyway. Ben Watson never lived up to his first round billing but he did contribute alot thru the years and I would qualify him as being more than just "starting quality" or "decent at best."

Hopefully this time around one of the TEs we drafted turns into the Pro Bowler we all hoped Watson would become but if they at least as talented as Ben (keeping in mind their skill sets are different) than that would be OK.

Meriweather started his rookie year with less playing time. Look at many of the stud safeties in recent NFL history and many of them have quite rookie seasons. Troy Polamalu only had 38 tackles, 2 sacks, and 0 INTs (a good rookie season, but nowhere near what he became). Rodney Harrison had 3 tackles, 0 sacks, and 0 INTs his rookie year. John Lynch had 10 tackles and a FF his rookie year. Darren Sharper had two INTs, but only 13 tackles and a forced fumble.

Not saying Chung is going to be a stud, but his first year performance may be misleading to what he might become.

Sorry if I was unclear, but I meant that less for myself than as a general palliative for those who complain about all of the other players we should have taken instead. I'd like to see Chung vindicate his selection is all.

Correct me if I am wrong but the 34 pick came from the Cassell trade and we traded our own first rounder back and if we were that high on Delmas we could have had him.

Even if that isn't correct everything we heard from Caserio and BB after the draft made it out like they wanted Chung much more than Delmas (of course what else are they supposed to say). But some of the things Caserio said in particular about wanting to jump thru a wall when he met the kid and talking about how their scouting went back to last year on him made me think it was genuine.

As to some of Chungs other skills. I recall reading in college how he played every DB position and was known as the rover of the D because on any given play he could be anywhere. Leadership is certainly a quality he posseses as in college he had all his teamates doing push ups between drills to keep busy something he brought to the pros and even has some of his teamates doing though not to the extent read about in college. He is also really good on STs too he can PR, I believe he is training to be the punt protecter, and wasn't a bad gunner (though he cant do two of those at the same time).

I admit I really can't remember his rookie season. I knew it wasn't spectacular. The stats were decent for a rookie.
