I don't get why so many fans and local media pundits are so down on Jermaine O'Neal. So he's 31 and has a lot of miles on his body, so what? He's a LOT better upgrade over Rasheed Wallace or Shaq, in my opinion.

Look up his stats. He's been extremely consistent. As the main guy in Indiana, he was putting up Gasol numbers. The past 4 years as more of a role player, he played 28-30 minutes a game, and put up 13 points and 8 rebounds, almost the exact numbers every year. He plays mostly down low unlike Rasheed, and has high FG percentage figures. Given the other guys playing for the same amount of money, Jermaine O'Neal is arguably a good deal, a discount/bargain at his salary. Darko is almost making as much as he is.

He isn't slow as molasses as Shaq either, who would have been a terrible fit for this Celtics team which likes to run.

Not sure how the impending Shaq signing is going to impact the team, but Jermaine O'Neal should get twice as many minutes as Shaq. I don't really see how Shaq is going to fit into this team, when the Celtics are a fast break team with Rondo, where Rondo's game is about driving to the hoop, and Shaq clogs the lane and is slow as molasses. Shaq is also a major liability as a foul shooter.

Rondo is a huge liability as a foul shooter as well.....I thought about your point of shaq clogging the lane but if you watch how rondo penetrates he tries to draw the defenders to him and will throw it up for alley oops.....As long as Shaq doesn't stand right in the middle of the lane I think it will be just like having perk out there.....Neither perk or shaq can shoot and have good low post games.....I really want Shaq because he will take fouls from the other teams and wear down there big men.....Perk was never really in the fast breaks either as rondo would run down with Ray, PP or KG so it's really no different.....Plus I think shaq can still play solid defense and with KG always helping and the Celts playing there smothering defense he will help out.......I believe this could be a huge signing for big man depth and a great veteran presence....

Trust me, Jermaine is not an upgrade over Shaq and Rasheed. Not even close. If you can get Shaq, you pull the trigger in this case.

On the radio they kept saying Jermaine O'Neal was horrible based on his play in Miami and in the playoffs.

However, his Miami performances were pretty much the exact same that he's had the past 4 seasons - 28 mins, 13 pts, 7 rebs, 2blocks per game - remarkably consistent.

In the most recent playoffs he only got to play 23 minutes a game, but still put up good rebounding and block numbers. He did shoot horribly, but the Celtics aren't really counting on him to score anyways, we already have Big Baby off the bench for that.

Jermaine Oneal is a waste of a roster space. hes a pathetic joke. i dont care what his stats are just watch him play. ill take shaq at 60 years old over jo the bum anyday.

As you know, stats don't tell the whole story. I watched him enough with the Heat. Trust me, J. O'Neal is good for depth purposes but that's about it. You may not need him for offense but his defense is just short of horrible too.

I understand what all of you are saying about J O'neal BUT.......there is something about putting an unmotivated player on a championship contender with a guy named Kevin Garnett that will get in your ass if you don't put out max effort......We all know J O'neal can play as he showed us in his earlier years in Indiana......On a team with the veterans and tradition like Boston I think he will step his game up knowing that they don't care who you are/were that they will cut your ass in a heartbeat if you don't give 100%.....

I know I knocked Shaq earlier in the thread, but the fact that he signed with the Celtics for the veteran minimum... I'm all for it. Definitely a good deal, at the very least. We still have Rasheed's mid-level to play with now, Danny will probably make a trade for a defensive stopper in mid-season using Rasheed's contract.

It's not that I didn't think he didn't give max effort. Even worse, I think he DID give max effort and still managed to suck something awful.

really? how did that work out with sheed? he didnt start giving max effort or even give a damn until the playoffs started.

Where did the slacker label start for Jermaine O'Neal? Maybe Jermaine O'Neal is like JD Drew in that he looks disinterested but still puts up numbers.

or maybe he is a underachiever with no heart who could have become much better than the bum he is.

See I will have to disagree.....I don't think that sheed didn't give max effort during the season but that he was out of shape.....it took him a while to get in shape and once he did I think he played pretty well, even at the end of the regular season......I believe that with these older guys you will find that they will take a play here or there to catch there breath but that doesn't mean they don't give max effort when they are out there.....They will need to rotate these guys like hockey line changes to keep them fresh and playing at the top of their games....

your kidding ? right? he was out of shape? what the hell is a guy who signed a big contract to play basketball doing out of shape? he wasnt recovering from a injury. he should have been in the best shape he could have been for somebody his age. the fact that he wasnt supports my argument not yours.

I don't disagree with that point....BUT how often does this happen? All the time with big time athletes not just in basketball....You are saying because someone isn't in top shape that they can't give max effort? Really? You may not be able to exert max effort for as long but it doesn't mean you are out there loafing necessarily.....A perfect example is ALBERT HAYNESWORTH....

i dont remember saying that. but in wallaces case its true. this is what you said. [I don't think that sheed didn't give max effort during the season but that he was out of shape]. let me make it simple j o'neil is a stiff because hes a underachiever. just because he will be playing with kg and company doesn't mean that will change. see rasheed wallace who you said was out of shape. the fact he was out of shape makes him another underachieving rich bum. kg and company couldnt motivate him to get in shape or play hard until the playoffs. wallace did whatever he felt like doing regardless of what his teammates wanted him to do.

I guess we will just have to see how this plays out....we aren't going to convince each other and we have opposite views so I just hope he proves me right and you wrong....not so I can say I told you so but because it will be in the best interest of the Celts if he can come to play every night AND PLAY HARD....
