Ian's Daily Blog - In a piece I wrote back on July 6th, the reports were pretty positive for rookie defensive end Jermaine Cunningham. That continues to be the case so far through week one of Patriots training camp.

This article is contradicting what I've read on this board regarding Cunningham and Spike.
I thought it was Spikes that was doing good while Cunningham was...well is not doing as well.

IMO Spikes has stood out more to me on the field but reading this article it seems to be talking alot about how Cunninghams transition to OLB is going. Spikes is switching schemes but not position and was a cerebral player at Florida so there is as much of a learning curve (though still big from college to pros). I think there is a lot to be said about the fact the Cunningham is even mentally ready for the reps he has taken and while I feel Spikes as stood out more by making a few plays or nice hits it is easy to understand what was being said about Cunningham in this article having been to a bunch of practices.

IMO Cunningham has seemed more impressive in other areas of LB than pass rush and since we are all so fixated on our pass rush problems we may have neglected the other areas a little. I recall a few notes on Cunningham that I wrote in my camp breakdowns were one play where he sealed the edge nice on a run to his side and another where he covered out in the flat and stayed with his back to the sideline.

I will be taking a closer look at those two, the next time I go to camp. Last time I saw Spikes, I had the impression that his plate was very full, and that he was really learning on the fly, to the point where BB was hovering over him. Cunningham has been solid, to me. Not outstanding, but solid.

“I feel like a football player,” Cunningham told the Boston Herald yesterday. “Out here on the football field with cleats on, just tackle the person with the football.”

“I’m just out here trying to get better. That’s what practice is for, to come out and get better every day.”

Just trying to get better. The questions I had about him coming out of UF weren't his pass rush abilities. He seemed to have good technique. My questions were about his instincts. He sometimes seemed to get lost in coverage and also seemed to overpersue. For those of you going to training camp, how are his coverage abilities?

He sometimes seemed to get lost in coverage and also seemed to overpersue. For those of you going to training camp, how are his coverage abilities?

Last Friday I only watched him in coverage on one play. I was watching him and momentarily freaked and said to myself "Rush the passer!" but Cunningham correctly followed his man out into the flat in pass coverage. On the next play they ran to his side and he and the rest of the D stuffed the run. Good plays. Two plays does not make a camp, but it is what it is.

Doug Gabriel said it was no problem learning the pats system, piece of cake (or something like that).

I do remember this, maybe someone could confirm.

I do remember this, maybe someone could confirm.

He did. His problem is that he couldn't read defenses. I remember TB without naming names said we need to make better sight adjustments and it was after a game in which DG went the wrong way on a route and TB got picked off.

At least Donald "Can't Learn Da Plays" Hayes was honest when he said, "I don't really know the offense yet".

I would agree with the Solid impression where as I think Spikes as had a few impressive hits which to a fan viewing would make him stand out more I know it did to me.

It wasn't Cheerios... Frosted Flakes perhaps?


99.9% of athletes... huh... Some guy changed his last name to 85 in spanish.
Another has a reality tv show. Others talk about themselves in the 3rd person.
I wouldn't say it's 99.9%

One thought about pass rushing...Matt Light is only going to give up 1-2 freebies in a whole game, so the percent of time Cunningham or anybody else gets by Light is pretty low. Not saying anything about Cunningham, since I have not seen him play, just a general observation about the degree of big plays that a pass rusher can make. 1-2 per game so even less in a short practice.

I see Cunningham as having the talent and speed and intelligence. Whether he is willing to watch film and work hard will have more to do with his success than anything else from here on out. IMO he has that work ethic.

There is no reason to believe he will be any less stout against the run than most other 260+ pound LBs. And he sure is fast, so if he can figure out how to run around some big NFL size dudes he should do well.

The best part about that quote is the REDUNDANCY of it. He is actually talking a lot like Belichick would. Repeating himself with football jargon mixed with cliches and repeating it.

Me and a few of my coworkers are working on a theory that the MORE you repeat yourself, and say a bunch of words without giving anything away....all the while saying the same thing over and over...

The more "Belichick-ian" you are.

Actually it is a Cunningham-ism...

He likes to say he is a football player whenever anybody asks him anything about his position. I think he is a guy that 'gets it' mentally.

What a terrible attempt at a counterpoint. Lots of athletes say the right thing. But it's nowhere near 99.9%.
