and Schobel claims he does want to play.

Bills have no practice this morning, but they do have news. They will release two-time Pro Bowl DE Aaron Schobel today.

Schobel does want to continue playing and soon will begin looking for a new home. He's from Houston, a team that could use a pass rusher.

This is the definition of monstrous stupidity if they couldn't get even as much as a low pick out of him, or simply held on to his contract to force him to retire.

Agreed. I am constantly amazed at the professional mediocrity of the Buffalo front office. It's as if the only reason the franchise exists is for tax write-off purposes.

Monstrous stupidity on the part of the other 31 teams, none of whom apparently are interested in giving up a draft pick to acquire Schobel and his contract?

This isn't a surprise cut. The info has been out there. If no one wants him, then they don't.

Although I suppose it is possible teams have been informed quietly by Schobel's agent that Schobel has selected the Texans already and will not report to anyone else so do't bother off a trade?

I'm not sure if he would want to take a pay cut, but if he would, I would love to have him here has a pass rushing DE in sub-packages.

My guess is that he will sign with Houston. Most logical fit. He wants to close to his kids, play in a 4-3, and play for a team that has a chance to go to the playoffs. Houston can offer him two of those three that the Pats cannot.

Eh, you never know. He could be the missing pass rusher on the other side of Mario Williams that puts all the pieces together for the Texans on defense. They were pretty decent last year and it wouldn't surprise me to see them sneak in as a Wild Card team this year, especially being in the same division as the Tits and the Jaguars. With him, they could have a defense to match that offense (should Schaub stay healthy).

Brady's probably happy about this

They simply could have traded him to the Texans for at least a 7th. Wouldn't you have given up at least a 7th to get him here as a 4-3 rush specialist?

I suspect that if he were traded, his contract would go with him, however if he's cut, he can make a new contract that teams would be willing to pay?
Just my guess.

Reiss seemed to think we could fit him in in this post:
Schobel situation worthy of attention - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

...and as of a few minutes ago, Reiss posts that BB isn't showing any interest:
Belichick doesn't play along on Schobel - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

So is this BB's poker face or is he really not interested given the potential and current assumed lack of pass rush?

It's possible he put a feeler out and Schoebel's agent let him know he's not interested in the Pats. Not every "lack of interest" means that BB wouldn't want the player if he could have him. They just play these things so close to the vest, I guarantee we don't hear about most of the inquiries they make.

It would be nice if he'd come here, if not I'd love him in Houston to give hell to manning. CheerS!!!!

It seems like a logical fit, but you have to wonder if the Texans want him to get in the way of younger prospects they have on the D line, like Connor Barwin.

Remember that they also have Antonio Smith who is a pretty decent starter (run defender) at DE. I'd imagine they want Barwin to compete for Smith's job and that will be much harder if Schobel is there. Not sure I'd actually make the move if I were the Texans. Only if I were worried about Barwin's potential or pass rushing ability.

I think Bill knows something about the new guys we don't. He might also know something about Burgess (skipping camp) that we don't.

Should be interesting if Schobel signs w/ a new team right away.

Yes- it's entirely possible. We'll probably know soon enough.

Easy solution: The Texans sign Schobel, subsequently cut Barwin and we pickup Barwin. At that point the Patsfans members who would have bet their first born that we would take him in the draft will simultaneously explode. :D

WE need him more than houston does. Houston already has mario williams and connor barwin.

Good, he's given us so many fits over the years. He picked off Brady and took it to the house in the opening game last year, right? I could see BB taking a look at him but I'd bet Schobel goes to Houston. Makes sense for him and his family.
