Celtics #7 and Red Sox #1. Pretty good showing by Boston sports fans. Colts fans just ahead of Pats though ... I have a feeling that'd change quickly with a .500 season and an outdoor stadium.

That list is awful

Decent list, but Colts fans ahead of Pats fans? Not so sure about that.

Here's the story that explains the rankings:

America's Best Sports Fans - Forbes.com

Thank you! The list by itself was worthless.

OK, so they looked at Home Attendance/Road Draw, Merchandise Sales and Surveys of in-market popularity. Since the article doesn't say they weighted one as more important than another, they must have given each equal weighting and then, presumably, added up the rankings for each category to produce a list. The article doesn't say, but implies, that the teams were measured against others in their Sport and not all others.

All I can say is that Hockey is either a lot more popular than I thought or there's a "Hockey Bias" in the analysis. Other than the Hockey teams, the list makes sense I guess.

I was surprised that the Colts were up so high, but I guess Peyton generates a lot of merchandise sales, like Brady, nationwide. Both the Pats and Colts pack stadiums at home and on the road and are very popular in their local markets so, using the criteria, it doesn't surprise me that they come in high and near each other. Judging by the number of Red Sox caps and Jerseys I see all over the country and in airports everywhere, it makes sense they're at the top. The Steelers, at least until Big Ben's latest nonsense, have always had a national following, as have the Cowboys. Kobe generates a lot of sales for the Lakers. They Yankees sell a lot of merchandise locally but are hated nationally.

OK, thanks. Except for the hockey teams, considering the methodology, the list makes sense.

The Red Wings have a gigantic following of some pretty hardcore fans. Look at it this way, the other hockey teams in the Midwest include teams like Blue Jackets (expansion), Minnesota Wild (expansion), Blackhawks (awful until recently obviously), etc. And then you take into consideration how bad other Michigan / Ohio teams (Lions, Browns, Tigers, etc..) are along with the Wings' deep history and you have a solid fanbase. Their bandwagon is huge.

Kansas City fans have always impressed me the most out of all the football fans (judging from in stadium). Colts, Pats, Cowboys and Steelers are going to have the most fans cos those have been the best teams over the last few years (Dallas being the exception, but dynasty in 90s and "Americas team" helps.

KC seems to be rocking on game day. I dont know much about the other sports, but that list just seems to be a list of the most popular franchises.

Agreed. Lakers fans 12th. They come late, leave early and don't give two .......
Re Indy what else is there to do there except watch a race on Memorial Day weekend......?

Goobers wearing cow pie hats and a mean IQ below 100 ranked ahead of N.E. fans???

to misquote Tommy Heinsohn...these polls are RIDICULOUS!

That doesn't make a lot of sense - the text says Colts fans have "repaid the Irsay family" for relocating the franchise, and then talks about all their recent playoff appearances. So the fans are responsible for the team making the playoffs?

Lol at Indy and the Lakers.

Sorry folks, but I have to be frank - - - Patriots fans ahead of Packer fans??????

Then Colt fans ahead of both???????

Yeah, those "sports experts" at Forbes magazine should go back to rating foie gras.

I think they mean that the fans helped drive up the value of the Franchise.

Agreed, but if you look at the methodology (link courtesy of Uncle Rico above), the outcomes make sense. The Pats probably generate bigger merchandise sales now that Favre is gone and they are also no doubt a bigger road draw. The people at Forbes, who indeed know more about foie gras than football, were clearly trying to find "objective" criteria for ranking fan bases and the outcomes were screwy.

They're ahead of Pats fans at being statistics geeks and fantasy football douchebags. Those two pretty much describe every Colts fan I've ever met. If you could add another description, my best guess would be "hillbilly".

I know. ;) It was probably also a matter of trying to cram all that text into that little box. But it still seemed odd.
