I think that we do indeed need to carry additional wideouts this year, in addition to the three tight ends.

Welker, Tate and Edelman all were injured last year. Moss and Holt may or may not have more than one year. Price will likely be inactive all year, absent two injuries to wide receivers, which is fine.

While I have no idea how the reps will turn out with so many targets, I do think that we need ALL of Moss, Welker, Edelman, Holt, Tate and Price.

Aiken and Slater are NOT wide receivers, even though they are list as such. Theya re competing for one of the ST-only positions. We usually have a couple.

As far as Price being inactive, I think you're underestimating him...give him a little time to learn, the ability is there.

I think with how thin it got at WR last year they carry 6 at the expense of an extra RB, TE, or QB.

You never know how quick time can catch up but there is no reason right now to think Moss doesn't have a several years left. I think more than how much time Moss has left I am more concerned with how much time he has left with us.

the only one I can see gone would be Holt but I want to keep the 6.

Agreed they are competing for the few STs only roles.

Because of his special teams prowess, I doubt it.

Agreed. I think Slater will be the odd man out. I know it was a while ago, but I can't get that muffed punt from the 2008 Steelers game out of my head.

Yeah, I agree with that. Slater really isn't much of a gunner or a returner. Unless you want your returner to catch the ball, run straight into a pile, and get drilled for a highlight reel hit.

I, too, would like to see us keep Holt along with Moss, Edelman, Welker, Tate, and Price. I feel like given his special teams experience in college, McCourty could be our next ST captain after Aiken leaves. Throw in Arrington and that's two guys who could justify cutting Aiken. But knowing Bill, he'll probably cut Holt before Aiken. Also, Hernandez is similar in some ways to a WR in his quickness so in essence, keeping Holt might be considered by some as overkill. But I agree with the initial topic. Unless it restricts other areas of position depth, you can never have enough depth/talent at receiver.

Reason I say Aiken is there seems to be a youth movement on the offense skill positions. We only need one elder statesman besides Moss. We have that and more in Holt. Slater may still have a little upside of untapped potential. We saw when we had Aiken as a main part of the offense. He had a few grabs but was not consistent and was a below average route runner to boot. Special Teams, I think Chung, Mcgowan, Woods, Alexander, Guyton, Arrington, Slater.
These names can all do what Aiken does to the same level?
Only the coaches can answer that.

Do we need 6? Potentially. Are you willing to give up that 6th reciever roster spot and take it away from a player in say the secondary or linebacking core? Personally, I wouldn't.

I see Moss, Welker, Tate, Edleman and Price making the 53. I'm not willing to use a 6th receiver spot on a guy like Holt, or Aiken. Besides, if an injury arrives, I'm almost certain Holt won't be picked up by anyone else, so you could just sign him off the street.

I agree, but there are those who have Slater as winning one of the ST only spots. Obviously, there is lots of competition for the "last" four roster spots : Aiken, Slater, Arrington, Lockett, Murrell, Alexander, and Williams.

I have four spots if we go with 4 corners, 6 defensive linemen, and 8 linebackers.

Agreed. I think Slater will be the odd man out. I know it was a while ago, but I can't get that muffed punt from the 2008 Steelers game out of my head.

I want 5 plus Aiken. Cut Holt.

Fair assessment. Out of those, I see Aiken, Arrington and Alexander in there with the other spot up for grabs. Slater has some raw ability, but I've found the mental aspect of his game suspect, and I don't think he'll win out over those three.

I'm not sure. I'd like to see how this develops over the next few days. However, I'm more down on Holt than I thought I would be.

but weren't they thin at WR pretty much from the get-go? There was Moss, Welker...then nobody else. Edelman was still in development and Galloway was...well, needless to say. I'm still not sure how we managed with only two legitimate WR's last year (testament to how good they were), especially when Welker was out for a couple of games early in the season. That being said, we'll have to see how these guys shape up through TC. By the third preseason game, we'll have a good idea. Maybe we'll need Holt considering our youth or maybe he has nothing left afterall.

Youth doesn't scare me overly much. The Giants weren't very good last year, but had some surprisingly good performances from their young WRs. I'm hoping for some of that this year from this corps. Between Randy and Wes, the leadership is there already.

I'm only interested in keeping Holt around if he can be that medium-range threat to draw coverage off of Randy, and open up the underneath for Welker. Though, I suspect that Tate will probably be able to do some of that, and maybe even Hernandez, based on some of the reports I'm reading.

If we do need to cut one of our WRs I would probably have to go with Holt just because he can only play WR. BB likes guys that can have more than 1 role with the team and all the other guys can play ST's, Holt cannot. Especially when battling for some of the final roster spots, playing more than 1 position can get you somewhere.

Exactly. Just going off what I've heard, Price is impressing while Holt is not. A 5WR set of Moss, Tate, Welker, Edelman, and Price sounds awesome to me, and that's not even including the TEs. If there's an injury and Aiken is our 5th WR, so be it. Just use Hernandez as the 5th WR instead or something.

I don't agree with those who are suggesting that Holt should be cut.

Holt has so much experience and Tate, Edelman and Welker are all coming off seasons where they were injured. It makes sense to have an experienced head who can come in if more than one goes down or need to be rested.
