Could Tory Holt be the #2 WR?

NFW

Edelman had a bad start of practise this afternoon before reverting to form and excellence. There is NO WAY, short of running over BB's dog, that Edelman gets cut. Holt goes 1st and I'm very excited about Holt.

Price is at the guy risk although as a 3rd pick and definitely not a stiff I can't see him snuck onto the PS.

Yes, Aiken had a couple great plays last season out of manny pissed away ones but watching him at camp you know he's a stiff, compared to his competition.

As far as Aiken, he is only making the team because of his special teams ability.
We have added an awful lot of young players who figure to make the team and contribute on special teams. For the first time in a long time, I think we will have special teams made up of a lot of 'future starters' rather than relying on vets who can only contribute on special teams.

Whenever I see a "who is the #2 WR" topic, it seems as if it becomes confusing because of different definitions of a '#2 WR'.

To some people the #2 WR is the WR who gets the second most plays called, the #2 option for the QB, the player who ends up with the second most receptions and passes thrown his way. In the Pats offense of the last three years that is the slot receiver, whether it is Welker or Edelman. For a team like the Cowboys or Colts you could say the #2 receiver is actually a tight end (Witten and Clark.)

Others look at #2 WR as the player who is most often lined up wide opposite Moss. That was Gaffney for a couple of years, and could be Tate, Holt or Price this year.

I would suggest labeling players as split ends and flankers, but that would probably cause even more confusion than '#2 WR' does.

with welker, out it's moss and Holt, on the out side with Julian Edelman, in the slot im not sold on Tate, being the #2 right now i see Tate, as a return man who will make some plays at WR not a starter at lest not this year.

Let me confuse it even more:)
When we have 2 WRs, Welker is on the field.
The only reason to put #3 anywhere in the vicinity of his name is because he lines up inside when we go to 3 or 4 wide.

The analogy is a starting corner who plays on the slot guy in the nickel (there was one real good example recently, but I cant remember who it was). Thats not really the #3 corner.
Sometime when I read these threads I think people are talking about someone playing across from Moss in 2 WR sets. That is and will continue to be Welker.

Agree about Aiken except that he's at risk because of the # of quality WRs AND the young ST talent you mention. This year we have the luxury that our ST guys will be backups for areas where we have less QUALITY depth. I liked Aiken at WR last year untill he proved me wrong; he was not a complets stiff but certainly not adequate depth either.

I dont think Aiken would have ever been signed here much less made the team a few times if he wasnt an excellent special teams player.
He really only saw the field as a WR because of Galloways failure and other injuries made him the only choice.

Someone mentioned the possibility of Price going to the PS...no way he makes it to the PS without being claimed, the kid is going to be a good one...if BB doesn't think he'll contribute more than Holt this year, I wonder of the infamous phantom injury to IR is a possibility for Price. That would definitely open up a spot for Holt.

We don't post stuff like that here. Jetsfans will rat us out to their boy Goodell.

I think of it in terms of '07 (pretty good offense):
Moss = Moss
Welker = Welker
Gaffney = Holt/Price?
Stallworth = Tate?

add to that tight ends who can actually catch the ball.

No kidding. I always thought all those receivers would open things up for Watson and he'd have an impact year, but he didn't (other than career high 6 TD).

Jeez, just realized I left Edelman off my list! Maybe we just don't need running backs this year with these receivers and TEs....

That stunts growth. If they are all worth it keep six it isnt that crazy. Like I said you just keep one less at another position.

I agree. And if it's close I say give Price a year on the field over Holt.

Really Gaffney and Stallworth rarely were productive at the same time.
Stallworth was phased out by Gaffney as the season wore on. But neither produced too much as the 4th,
We have never really had a 4th option catch a ton of passes and even the 3rd option most season only caught 30 or so passes.
With Moss and Welker taking 200 catches, there isnt a ton of catches left to go around after you and in TEs, Faulk, etc.
I think a very important fact, though, is that the times the 4th or 5th WR is really needed are crticial times. They are 3rd downs when the top guys are taken away and Brady needs to check down, or stepping in to a big role due to an injury etc.
While the 4th or 5th may only catch a dozen passes or so, if they are very good WRs, they will be catching them in place of 3rd down failure in a lot of cases.

this is the year. Moss and Welker do their thing and Edelman, Tate, Gronk and Hernandez will complement them like no other not to mention what Price, Holt, and Crumpler give you along with the backs.

the scary part is the oline with the mankins hold out and kazcur injury. but the above gives me hope for an 07 scary offense

Well, we at least need Faulk.

For sure. I seem to remember he missed a certain season opener against KC, and that didn't work out very well.

No way Pollard gets near Brady with Faulk there.
