Hail to the Chief (and the highest-paid safety in NFL history): Eric Berry's deal: 6 years, $60 million max, including $34 million gtd.

I can understand veterans holding out for big money when ridiculous things like this happen.

Technicallyyy, I'm assuming it's probably not going to get much higher than that $34 mil guaranteed, so that's under 6 million a year. A lot of these deals are done in a way just to make the agent look better. I'm sure Pioli knows how to work a contract.

Men, this is disrespectful.

Its going to be a disaster when the new CBA comes along with a rookie cap and a lower total cap. These top 5 picks from the past few years are going to really be cap issues.

Re: OT: Eric Berry 6 years $60 million

That is madness! Highest paid safety in the NFL, has never paid a down! While Polamalu isn't paid that, and is magnificent to watch! Except against us :)

Re: OT: Eric Berry 6 years $60 million

We need that rookie scale so friggin badly. 6 years 60 milli for a safety who hasn't played a down?!@?# You gotta be kidding me Pioli.

Not much Pioli could do about it other than having traded down instead of making the pick.
The contract is pretty much predetermined by what the guy in that slot got last year. Cant really do anything about it.

Fair enough. True.

And this is exhibit A as to why the teams that pick high never get good enough to pick low. When your paying a total unproven SAFETY (it aint even like we're talking QB here) 10 million a year, how the hell do you have cap flexibility? No wonder veterans feel "disrespected" making millions when some new guy comes in making way more millions. If it takes a year w/out football, it sucks but we need a rookie contract. This has to be done.

**** the NFLPA. What rights, what demands does an unproven NFL draft pick have? The fact these kids can make 5 mill a year not even a year out of college is insane enough. 10 million a year? Are you serious? I just can't get over that.

It also sucks because if Oakland gave us a top 5 pick we'd almost have to trade it with how much salary alone would be going to that pick. There's simply no value at the top of the draft :[ /rant over.

WOW.. Look at all the over-reactions.

Unless you know the details of the contract, the 60 Million is all but guaranteed to be fictitious. As someone mentioned, the 60 Million is probably with Berry making every single escalator in the contract. And that's not likely to happen.

The devil is in the details. Let's see them before we start acting all out of whack. OH, that being said, 34.6 million guaranteed for a Safety who has never played a down is absolutely ridiculous.

Well considering you yourself just said he's over paid regardless, I don't think anyone is overreacting. I'm not here to argue, but there's no question we need a rookie cap this **** is getting out of hand. Everyone here pretty much has agreed.

There is already a rookie cap.

Yup ... it's why the system needs to be fixed.

More of that money needs to go to the pension fund ...

the people that made this contract possible.

Yet another slap in the face to the veterans of the NFL.

I think Berry will be worth it, he's that good. However, there still need to be changes on how these rookies are paid.

Isn't it the 'amount of money they can spend' on each years rookies, but I have never worked out how it works :)

Escalators and guaranteed money or not, that is a stunning amount for a rookie safety who has proven nothing.

The only rookie "cap" that there is in the NFL is how much a team is alloted from their salary cap to sign their drafted rookies. There is no individual limit on what the maximum amount a rookie can earn is.

And the allotment for the top 5 picks is extraordinary... There have been as many busts in the top 5 as there have been stars..

That 2011 pick from the Raiders, looks better and better now.
