Which one will be the better player? This should be an interesting comparison (at least for me) as the season wears on. As you know Wilson was taken after McCourty by the Jets. McCourty impresses me as more of a fleet-of-foot cover corner while Wilson is more of a thumper. Stats will probably not be a fair comparison since Wilson will be covering the 2'd or 3'd receiver while McCourty will be eventually covering the number one receiver.

The scary part is that the Jets now have 3 quality corners which will free up both safeties for blitzing. Hopefully Hernandez will break free.

McCourty.

He's a Cover Corner.

Wilson is a Nickel Corner.

And Cromartie is not a quality corner.

Here's the take on why we got Wilson: We need that man-press corner to cover them speedy slot receivers that beat us all day last season, especially in the playoffs. Wilson clocked in at a blazing 4.42 40-yard dash time, in addition to a remarkable 25 bench press reps at the NFL combine. The 5'10", 190-pound cover-man possesses a rare blend of speed and strength. One analyst had this to say

Expect Wilson's strength to prove tremendously advantageous in press coverage, as Ryan will regularly isolate the rookie versus opponents' slot receivers, such as New England's Wes Welker, in man-to-man coverage

ESPN's scouts talked about what needs work:

"Lacks elite recovery speed and struggles to recover when getting caught in trail position (and) needs to do a better job of getting head turned in time to locate the bal

Anyhow, I can't compare him to your guy who I know very little about. But he has a great mentor in Revis who I can tell you took Wilson under his arm from day one.

You got Wilson because the Pats past on him.

Press Coverage is all great when you are marked up against a WR that is standing still.

When Wes and Julian are on the field at the same time and one is moving in motion, who will cover him?

Moss, Wes, Edelman and one of Holt, Tate and Price out wide.

Good Luck covering Wes or Edelman with a LB.

A healthy Moss is going to give Revis a run for his money.... see what I did there.

You got Wilson because the Pats past on him.

Not sure what that means to you, but it doesn't mean that the Patriots made the better pick. Players get passed over all the time and the teams that passed over them sometimes get to put that in the oops column.

With that said, the thread did ask the question which was would be better. I know that Wilson showed up for training, and he wasn't in great shape. I believe he kept throwing up on the field. I've heard good things about him but I'm not ready to say he's the answer to our short passing defense either, something that was a huge problem for us.

How do you know that if McCourty was available that the Jets wouldn't have taken him over Wilson

NJ resident /Rutgers /Cover Corner ?????????

While they're both cornerbacks, everything that I've read about them indicates that they're just very different players. The Pats needed someone with a lot of versatility who could cover downfield, and that's definitely not Wilson. Wilson has a more limited skill-set, but is by all accounts very good at what he does, and I'm sure that the Jets will put him in a position to succeed.

I don't know that for certain, so good point. But I do know that Tannenbaum scouted Wilson personally and gave him a high grade well before the draft. I know they were'nt disappointed and actually thought he'd have gone higher (don't know how much higher).

IOW, he can't really cover slot guys all that well. A few pivot routes from Welker and Wilson is going to need therapy. :)

Actually, in the draft I wanted Wilson and hardly followed McCourty. But I'll take BB's word for it. He's proven me wrong more times than I'd like to remember.

Yet the NY press was all over McCourty saying how Ryan loved him and he'd be a perfect fit for the team.

How strange...

I think that's exactly the plan for Wilson. And you're answer is probably the best one. They'll both have different jobs, so it might come down to the question of value. If Wilson helps us with someone like Welker (yes, extremely difficult task), then his value will be incredible to the Jets who got beat a lot last year in the short passing game.

Wilson, because he's a part of the greatest defense of all time and a key contributor to the Jets Super Bowl 45 championship.

But the press don't make decisions for Tanny or Rex so not sure what difference that makes. I'm not undervaluing McCourty. Don't know a lot about the kid. Just talking about the reasons we have Wilson on the Jets.

I actually wanted the kid from Alabama - Jackson?

He went at 21 and then the Pats started trading. Coincidence??

Hayden Jackson Wilson McCourty all have POTENTIAL

What helps them reach it is Coaching

In case any Pats fans need reminding, this is our 'press' at work:

“On a day when they could have had impact players David Terrell or Koren Robinson or the second-best tackle in the draft in Kenyatta Walker, they took Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who had 1 sack last season in the pass-happy SEC and is too tall to play tackle at 6-6 and too slow to play defensive end. This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon.”

I know I've posted that quote probably 5 times here, but anytime someone starts thinking that the opinion of sports media does or should matter, it warrants bringing up again.

patriotscpfc, I think BradyFTW's explanation summed up what the Jets were really wanting. MCourty sounds like less of a fit than Wilson so I'd say Wilson was the one on the Jets radar all along.

@NYJetsFan

So basically what I said here.

McCourty can be a #1 or #2 CB.

Wilson will never be more than a #2 or #3.
Saying that, with Revis, who needs another guy who can play #1.

McCourty.

He's a Cover Corner.

Wilson is a Nickel Corner.

And Cromartie is not a quality corner.
