Good player; but lets see if he still plays with the intensity he had now he has the money.

Gotta love Florio. He always finds a way to fit that potshot in there at the end...

Then again, the Broncos arguably had no choice but to pay Dumervil, given the manner in which the team has handled quarterback Jay Cutler and receiver Brandon Marshall.

Six years, $61.5 million for Dumervil | ProFootballTalk.com

Front loaded deal to take advantage of the uncapped year.

That's not a front loaded deal. It's actually the anthesis of one. He doesn't get any more money this year than he was going to anyway, he just got most of that sooner in the form of a small signing bonus conversion of most of his existing 2010 salary that will now be spread over the next 5 years... His 2010 cap hit therefore diminished. The deal is also not fully guaranteed in any respect. It's the same kind of rolling guarantees Ferguson got, only in this case they gave Dumervil the injury guarantees (maybe someone checked out the cost of funding your own), while technically they could still cut him for diminished skill (sucking or getting suspended or incarcerated or somehow losing your ability to perform consistently short of due to career ending injury) after this year and not owe him a dime. Thereafter he earns rolling skill guarantees (which I believe are still recoverable if you screw up as opposed to merely sucking - which is why that may be the basis of a claim Oakland will persue against JaBustus in light of his apparently long standing purple drink history) over the course of the second and third season that eventually pretty much match up with his $40M+ in injury guarantees.

It's a good deal for the Broncos on the eve of a potential work stoppage too since they built in flexibility to let the cap pay his deal going forward if they choose to, or they can convert the money in his advances to signing bonus to spread it for flexibility, but if they don't choose to they will retain the ability to persue recovery of it in the event he gets involved in something that gets him suspended or incarcerated or otherwise unavailable to perform for reasons other than injury. And in the meantime they didn't give him any more than they already would have this year and they didn't have to spend on a big signing bonus on the eve of a lockout.

Well, to be fair, Jay Cutler was the SB MVP last year.

...wait, he wasn't? The bears finished below .500? He's averaged almost 1.2 interceptions per game for his career? Nevermind then.

He was in is own mind :) Plenty of room in there :D

Is there anything stopping the Broncos from cutting him after this season (for "skill" purposes) and pay only the cheap first year? This, like DBrick's contract, seems to be a 1-year "prove-it" contract with more money being guaranteed after that.

Should we just start the 'lets sign him' thread early?

Haha, I fail at skimming. No wonder I thought of the connection to DBrick. It was in that post that I half-read :idea2:

No.. just no...
I've seen waaaaaaaaaaaaay too many of these already ("Trade a first for him," etc), and all it takes is simple knowledge of the system to realize how crappy of an idea this is. I guarantee that 90% of non-Patriots fans think Dumervil would be great for the Patriots, though :violent:
