Please explain to me the irreparable damage to the team of Brady (or any veteran on the offense) not being present for the first two weeks of Training Camp. Is it really a terrible to his teamates for Brady to indicate that he wants to sign a long term deal with the team, rather than risk injury and/or free agency. Is it really a terrible message to his teamates for Brady to want this issue taken care of so that it is not a cloud over the rest of Camp, the preseason and the regular season.

I would MUCH, MUCH rather have Brady a month late for camp than have him play the season with no extension.

From Brady's persepective, and mine, it seems that it is worth a couple of weeks to try to get resolution now.

Besides, Brady has absolutely no need for two a days!

Hey, I'm on record expecting Brady to be there at the start of camp. I just like that follow up line, that's all. I thought it made for one of Budweiser's better commercials.

There is an M and an E, though. What does that spell ?

mg - it's critical IMO that Brady be there because other than Moss we have rookies, second year players and a guy coming off ACL surgery. We need Brady and his WR/TE to be clicking in the first quarter of game one and that means ALL of training camp is necessary.

I did not suggest that Brady should or will skip any games, not even preseason games. he will definitely fulfill his contractual obligations.

The patriots have many times extended contracts in the summer before the last year of the contract. This would definitely not be unusual.

Why should they give him a new deal if he choses not to fulfill his opbligations for his current deal?

What part of "it's a business" don't you understand? There is an ME in TEAM and Brady has business and personal interests just like everyone else. IMHO, Bruschi is the only player in recent memory that really did not focus on his own needs and interests. Compensation in the nfl is a relatively balanced adversarial process. I have no problem with that. It is a better situation than if the players were the primadionnas dictating terms, or if the team dictated terms.

New options that Brady will be working with this year: Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Algae Crumpler, Torry Holt, Brandon Tate, Taylor Price, Buddy Farnham. That's seven new receiving options. Six of them have to get on the same page with the starting quarterback immediately if the offense is going to have any chance this year. Brady should absolutely show up at camp from day one.

Ok, so if Brady provides far less value by skipping camp, which hurts the team's chances of success, why should Kraft pay him more?

Does it seem a little contradictory for Brady not to fulfill his obligations because he wants a new contract, which has obligations he expects the team to fulfill? Yes, I'm aware that many players hold out and get deals but it's an absolutely garbage way to do business?

Brady is the face of the franchise and he's an example to everyone else, setting the kind of tone that it's cool to hold out while your under contract weakens the team.

There are two realities here that Brady understands very well and has spoken about often over the years: there's the "Team" and then there's the "Business." We are all familiar with the dozens of quotes in which he talks about each, so I won't insult you by citing them.

I think it's more likely that he'll show up for Camp on time than not simply because he wants to win with the team. But, it wouldn't surprise me and I wouldn't blame him if he didn't, because he understands that he has to look out for himself.

Bottom line: none of us can know. Smart money says he shows up. That's about all I have to say anymore on this.

There have really only been a handful of core team leaders in this decade. Those whose leadership had negative undertones in the locker room didn't get extended (at least for long) no matter what role they played on the field. Tedy and Rodney and Troy played out their deals and never held out. Heck, Troy even worked out here when he wasn't under contract and didn't know if he ever would be again...and Rodney took a paycut coming off career threatening injury. Like Brady they truly constituted the hard core core of this team. Guys who were all in and put the team first. Quaint characteristic in this day and age for sure. But one Belichick values almost as much as talent. Doesn't mean they were spineless, does it?? The year Seymour held out Rodney mentioned he himself wasn't among the top 20 paid at his position...but he didn't hold out. Go call Tedy spineless to his face. He had his reasons, he wanted to remain with the team that drafted him for his whole career, and he did. There are enough players who share your labor vs. management world view without projecting it onto those who don't.

The media created this little speculative tempest to fill the void between the end of OTA's and the opening of TC. As is the case with you, most of their musings are based on what they would do... I almost cried listening to Mazz implore Brady to hold out earlier this week - just like his co workers at the Globe were unwilling to do when last they negotiated with management (and the key issue was saving lifetime jobs for a bunch of entitled hacks like himself and Shank). When it's over they will rationalize all they did was speculate based on labor logic, and go on to whatever new speculation they see garners attention. Probably whether Brady will refuse to re-sign here over hurt feelings if forced to play out his deal or demand to be traded if he's tagged next season, 'cause they already know from experience Manning won't.
