Best line: "To bring some reporting to this..." lol

Anyway, good stuff here. Mike is still the man.

Tom Curran echos Reiss' opinion.

Brady expected in town this weekend

Last week, ESPN insider John Clayton threw a pile up against the wall wondering if Tom Brady would hold out from the start of training camp. We scratched our heads and explained that wouldn't be happening. Slow day in Seattle, apparently.

Today, Clayton continued to milk his own speculation saying on ESPN's Mike & Mike radio show that it remains a "possibility" that Brady could skip the start of camp. My goombah Tim Graham parroted Clayton's words.

A "possibility" gives one a pretty good amount of leeway. For instance, there's a possibility the Patriots will invite me to camp to replace Brady if he opted to not show. But it's a very, very slim one.

Why bring reporting when you can bring wild speculation and juicy gossip? If actual reporting had a role in sports, John Clayton wouldn't have a job.

From the interview (summaries/paraphrases, not quotes):

Talks not currently active. Not expecting a deal this week.

Labor situation is a factor, but is also a convenient excuse.

You do have to look at the Patriots past dealings (Samuel, etc...)

Would be shocked if Brady held out.

Wouldn't say the Brady/Patriots relationship is great. Both sides have an understanding that this is business.

Doesn't think Brady's coming to camp angry at the situation.

Mankins:

No movement on the situation. Wouldn't expect him to be in for the start of camp.

So, other than the holdout "possibility", Reiss is lined up with pretty much everyone else.

"Wouldn't say they have a great relationship"?!? When did Reiss say that? He said that they have a good professional relationship, but it isn't like they all meet for dinner and drinks.

Also you wrote in what you learned from the interview that Reiss said:

Doesn't think Brady's coming to camp angry at the situation.

Which clearly contradicts Silver's piece that says that brady is upset with the situation or Graham's or Clayton's report that Brady is so upset with the situation that he might hold out.

I will give you that maybe Reiss doesn't know anymore than anyone else, but his interview does contradict a lot of what has been reported. Reiss could be wrong, but he clearly makes it sound that there is far less conflict between sides than reported.

That was a lot better than his average peer. He even corrected them on Tom's 2010 earnings... That said, he still is a little behind on his fastball. The CBA is the heart of the matter, because the only way around it in a long term deal is a mega signing bonus this team can't afford let alone wouldn't be willing to proffer in the midst of a contentious CBA negotiation where the league claims player costs are outstripping revenue.

In his mailbag today Mike suggested an interim deal ala Chris Chambers. Trouble is Brady doesn't have any remaining guaranteed old money to push forward, and if they sign a short term extension it's just a bandaid that could potentially hurt Brady leverage wise when it's time to yank it and do a long term deal. For that reason I'm pretty sure that option has been discussed and dismissed.

I also wish someone would debunk the whole rookie QB guaranteed money angle. When you read the find print only a fraction of it is ever truly guaranteed to the extent the money in the level of contract Manning and Brady have already signed and will evenrually sign again is.

And analogies to what happened to Milloy, Bledsoe, even Samuel or Seymour (let alone Vrabel or Bruschi and Harrison who retired of their own volition) are nonsensical in the context of where Brady's performance on the field and in the locker room is concerned comparatively speaking.

That said, glad the relative voice of reason is back on the job.

Only in your alternate universe, Deus. FWIW Mike made it clear it was just his opinion that the CBA might be a convenient excuse. I don't think he fully grasps the difficulty in constructing a deal, the media has been painfully slow on the uptake in that regard as a whole, which has been probed here at length while he was on vacation.

And I have it on good authority that at least Kraft and Brady did dine out together while he was attending OTA's... Not to mention I can't remember the last time I saw BB biking around Hyannis in June...

"Wouldn't say they have a great relationship"?!? When did Reiss say that? He said that they have a good professional relationship, but it isn't like they all meet for dinner and drinks.

Question starts around 4:25. Answer (minus the "Ya know" stuff)

I wouldn't say that they're getting together and having dinner and all that stuff and that it's great
The word "great" comes at 4:40

Also:

"I'm not naive to say everything's great Greenie"
runs through 4:46.

Also you wrote in what you learned from the interview that Reiss said.....Which clearly contradicts Silver's piece that says that brady is upset with the situation or Graham's or Clayton's report that Brady is so upset with the situation that he might hold out.

You need to read Silver's piece again, because there's no contradiction there. Silver talks about "disconnect" and "cool distance", not "upset". That's certainly not contradicted by anything Reiss said. Now, what people read into the article might well be a different story....

Brady declined to comment, saying he is uncomfortable discussing the subject.....some people close to Brady feel the organization isn’t displaying much urgency toward ensuring the latter.

Silver's column about the growing disconnect

I will give you that maybe Reiss doesn't know anymore than anyone else, but his interview does contradict a lot of what has been reported. Reiss could be wrong, but he clearly makes it sound that there is far less conflict between sides than reported.

Yes, Reiss takes the not coming into camp angry approach, while others seem to feel there's more discontent than does Reiss. However, listen to Reiss again, and read Silver's piece again, and I think you'll find that a lot of posters owe Mr. Silver an apology.

Why bring reporting when you can bring wild speculation and juicy gossip?

Thats all Internet news is anymore.

Florio is the Pied Piper.

Here's what Silver wrote, which started this media frenzy: the portion of Bob Kraft's quote:

Great things happen in life if you're flexible and not rigid. ... We're balancing a lot of different factors in an unknown environment. We're not sleeping. It's just complicated.

Now look at the entire Kraft quote from the Boston Globe article which Silver based his column on:

"Let's put it like this, Tom Brady is going to be a part of this franchise. He wants to be. We want him. Great things in life happen if you're flexible and not rigid. We have to find a way to satisfy him and the team, and have a team that can win, big-time. That's what it's about. So we're balancing a lot of different factors in an unknown environment. So we're not sleeping. It's just complicated, and it's complicated for everybody. We hope we do a satisfactory job. But we'll figure it out one way or the other."

"We're very lucky to have him as our quarterback and we want him to be our quarterback for a long time into the future,'' Kraft said. "Everything he represents is pretty special. He's a winner. We're privileged to have him a part of the New England Patriots organization.''

See any difference?

Keep in mind that this is the article that Clayton, Graham, and the others are basing their speculation on. Excuse me if I fail to see why Silver is due an apology.

You are twisting what Reiss stated. When you said in your post that the relationship between the two sides isn't great which means it isn't going that well. Reiss is actually saying things aren't buddy buddy close.

You also seem to ignore the Clayton and Tim Graham reports and only want to focus on a report that is well over a month old now in Silver's report. Reiss was on Mike and Mike today because of Clayton's and Graham's info which Reiss directly refutes based on his information, not a report that is old news but supports Clayton's and Graham's report.

I will apologize to Silver right after he apologizes to Bob Kraft for his blantantly twisting his comments about Brady by ommitting the stuff that Kraft says how everyone ones to get a deal done to help bolster his story eventhough it is clear by the full quote, the way Silver wanted position the piece. Silver is a long standing professional journalist and should know better.

Exactly! I want to officiallly apologize to Michael Silver. Michael, I am sorry you are a hack journalist who has to resort to twisting quotes to bolster your own story. That is why you went from SI to Yahoo Sports. SI has their own share of journalistic problems, but their fact checkers would never let a hack job of Bob Kraft's quote out like that.

You are twisting what Reiss stated. When you said in your post that the relationship between the two sides isn't great which means it isn't going that well. Reiss is actually saying things aren't buddy buddy close.

I quoted Reiss word for word, other than the "Ya know" stuff. I didn't twist a damned thing.

I didn't ignore anything. YOU brought up Silver. I responded to it. I mentioned the comment about not coming to camp angry and that Reiss would be shocked if Brady held out. Clearly, those would be in response to Clayton, etc...

Actually, as one who claims to follow print and broadcast, YOU are the one who should know better. Reporters aren't obliged to post every word of every quote, and Silver didn't twist anything in a manner that's any different from how quality reporters work all the time. Hell, I say this even though I don't particularly like Silver as a journalist/reporter. In fact, at least in the context of the Reiss interview serving as a truth buffer, Silver got at least most of it right, and what might, or might not, be incorrect is stuff we don't have the answers to.

There is nothing wrong with Silver's edit. This sort of crap is why you've become useless to talk to. You've gone from being one of the best posters here to being an unpaid shill who attacks anything that's not 100% pro Patriots.

You twisted the mean whether you intentially or not. He implied it is a good business relationship, but not a close personal relationship

I talked about Silver, Clayton, and Graham in general. When I responded to you where talking in generalities that Reiss didn't contradict any information out there about Brady and not responding to me at all. Here is what you said:

So, other than the holdout "possibility", Reiss is lined up with pretty much everyone else.

So who exactly is this everyone else? Michael Silver is everyone else?

I will give you credit for trying to find any angle to not admit you are wrong.

Actually, as one who claims to follow print and broadcast, YOU are the one who should no better. Reporters aren't obliged to post every word of every quote, and Silver didn't twist anything in a manner that's any different from how quality reporters work all the time. Hell, I say this even though I don't particularly like Silver as a journalist/reporter. In fact, as the Reiss interview demonstrates, Silver got at least most of it right, and what might, or might not, be incorrect is stuff we don't have the answers to.

Ummm... You clearly do not understand journalism. Journalists are not allowed to pick and choose pieces of quotes to change the intent of the quote which Silver clearly did. He removed all the parts of the quote (including part of a sentence he included) that referenced that both sides want to get a deal done and both sides need to find common ground to make everyone happy and left the part that there is a lot of uncertainty and making it sound like the Pats are weary of getting a deal done at least now which clearly not what Kraft said. That is changing Kraft's quote which is a big no-no. Look at the reporter who is deep crap today for misquoting Dwayne Wade about his 9/11 comment by changing Wade's meaning by missing one word.

I listened to the clip twice. Reiss covered himself for any eventuality (while Brady "understands that it's a business" and they aren't "getting together for drinks," Reiss would be "shocked" if Brady held out or wasn't with the Patriots long term). That said, the overall tenor of his remarks is definitely to try to tone down the rhetoric, while leaving himself "outs" in several places in case things go in another direction.

I regard Reiss as probably the best media authority on what's happening with the Patriots, so I'll relax (changed my mood from "Worried" to "Pensive").

LOL! I won't even dignify that with a response.

I think it is fine to report the facts but why did the others feel the need to jump to a conclusion. A real reporter would let the facts speak for themselves and no speculate on what it might mean as Reiss did.

You twisted the mean whether you intentially or not. He implied it is a good business relationship, but not a close personal relationship

I twisted absolutely nothing, as you well know. Again:

I wouldn't say that they're getting together and having dinner and all that stuff and that it's great
