Ian's Daily Blog - Patriots runningback is spending his Sunday doing something interesting, as he'll be challenging area kids to quick-chess games.

I wonder if he opens with the Budapest Gambit?
anything which boils down to a public event in which you're playing chess quickly against some version of "all comers" suggests you know what you're doing at a chessboard. So it means something.
More to the point, I've long wanted to see athletes promoting COMPETITIVE INTELLECTUAL PURSUITS. Big props to Maroney for doing so.
If there's a clock on them, I doubt he's actually playing more than one game at once. Even so, anything which boils down to a public event in which you're playing chess quickly against some version of "all comers" suggests you know what you're doing at a chessboard. So it means something.

I'm a tournament chess player, and can say that I'm happy that Lawrence is interested in the game. The chess club of St. Louis is run by a billionaire who is devoted to the game and is interested in promoting it. He must have worked out something with Lawrence. The ability to play chess quickly and to play four simultaneous games tells us little about Maroney's chess abilities, unfortunately. He apparently doesn't have a USCF chess rating (I looked it up.) Now if he could play a game blindfolded, then that would indicate that he's pretty good. I play blindfolded from time to time.
btw, chess is very popular in prisons, and I'm sure there are quite a few good players locked up.
As other posters have written, it's great to see an NFL player playing chess as opposed to visiting night clubs and getting into trouble. Kudos to Mr. Maroney!
