Have read many anti- TO to NE threads on here recently, but if Moss is to head to richer and greener pastures, wouldnt it be worthwhile NE nabbing TO on a 2 yr deal to cover the departure of Moss and safeguard having a no.1 WR in NE for the next 2 seasons?

T.O would be 38/39 years old then. There's questions over if he is an elite wr allready. His production could really fall off a cliff. Is it really worth the headache?

Three threads for a way over the hill diva who hasn't been a legit #1 in some time and likely wouldn't be very happy as a 4th or 5th option... When Jerry Jones lets you go it's time to hang 'em up. TO may have been relatively quiet in Buffalo, but he was also of no consequence. Lots of teams are thin enough at the position that if he were worth the effort they'd have made it by now.

Re: How certain is it Moss leaves in 2011 ???

if moss, sees this team can win and he's still the #1 WR not #2 to welker, then i say he's back in 2011.

but if the pats are still just a one and done playoff team or worst and he's not geting the ball no way in hell he will take less money to play for the pats

as far as T.O he is not much better then a good #3 WR now forget about next year.

Re: How certain is it Moss leaves in 2011 ???

I'm sure it depends on his production this season and what sort of money he wants next year

Re: How certain is it Moss leaves in 2011 ???

I think I read somewhere that Owens was looking for $5 million per year. That seems to be way too much for a guy who had 829 yards and will turn 37 this season. And that's without taking into consideration the other issues with him.

As far as the fact that Moss' contract expires after this season, keep in mind that the Pats will still have the inside track to resign him if they so desire. In addition, every other team is in the same boat as the Pats are in regards to player contracts expiring and the uncertainty of the CBA. That means there are more players set to be free agents next year because teams have been hesitant to offer extensions - and that's before adding in the 200 or so players who had free agency delayed because of the added service time required to become an unrestricted free agent in the uncapped year.

Bottom line is that there will be far more free agents available next year than we have ever seen before, so even if the Pats don't resign Moss there will be plenty of other players available to take his place. In addition there are four very highly rated wide receivers in next year's draft; the Pats could use a first rounder on one of them. And depending on how Tate, Price and Edelman progress, there's the possibility of not needing to add another receiver.

I don't see why the team needs to go into panic mode now because Moss may not be on the team in 2011.

Re: How certain is it Moss leaves in 2011 ???

I don't think Moss will be here if he still wants to be paid as a #1 WR, but if he is willing to take a deal for a year or two, and will take a heavy pay drop.

Re: How certain is it Moss leaves in 2011 ???

I know Owens said he'd be willing to accept less, but how much less is he really willing to accept? Torry Holt signed for $1.15m, Kevin Faulk and Fred Taylor for $2m each, Alge Crumpler and Derrick Burgess for $1.4m each. Is it realistic to think Owens is actually going to drop his price all the way to those kind of numbers?

Much like Pierce/Allen with the Celtics, I do think Moss would take less money to stay with the Patriots. At this stage of his career, he may be thinking more about his legacy than his wallet to some degree. If we have another season like 2006 or 2007, it would be hard for him to leave and end his career with the Browns.

Re: How certain is it Moss leaves in 2011 ???

Moss is getting a bad rap from the mediots, because he still routinely blows them off. So they get back at him by subtly (and some times not so subtly) inferring that he's been either lazy, a bad lockerroom influence, or just a bad person.

The fact is that Randy is one of the more popular Pat amongst his teammates and his production has been worthy of a #1 WR, despite the fact that he was playing through a number of back and shoulder injuries. So THEY leave you with impression that Randy is definitely gone after this season.

While I'd love to have him back, I can understand the reluctance of the Pats to paying him top money at his age. I think Randy understands that too, and he doesn't have a problem with it.

There is a chance, IMHO, that he does come back. Especially if he finds that there isn't any teams willing to pay $10MM+/yr for a 2 or 3 year contract for a guy that old. At $5MM+ he'd be a bargain

Those wages probably highlight why Owens wont ever be a Patriot when you highlight it that way.

FTW, I do seriously believe that TO is a freak whose physical body could stand up to being a WR1 even at the age of 37\8.

I'd state that Marvin Harrison is too, even thou his numbers have tailed off recently.

I think the chances improves with the agent he signed today - Joel Segal an agent that is able to work with NE.

T.O. is not a #1 WR anymore.

I don't think he would ever be expected to be one here, even without Moss. The #1 deep threat would probably be Tate or Price (gut feeling says Price).

If the douches in the press like Felger would stop ragging on Moss and acknowledge what a team leader he is ...there would be a chance. I would not blame Moss for leaving when the idiots like Fleger and Callahan (what's the matter with this guy? Fetal alcohol syndrome?) are so obnoxious.

Moss is the best receiver that the Patriots have ever had and may ever have. He is a team leader on and off the field. He is also highly intelligent and a student of the game.

I am quite sure that if Ted Williams was playing for the Red Sox today Callahan would hate him with a passion...

Do you actually think Moss would make a decision as to his team of choice after 2010 based on what Felger and Callhan say or think?

TO is not a #1 receiver any more. If he was, he would have been signed by now. Receriver-starved teams have ignored him. Why a team with TO, HOlt, Welker, Edelman, Price and Tate would sign him is beyond me.

Even TO recognizes he is no longer a #1, saying he would be a role player with New England.

And he certainlly isn't insurance for Moss leaving. "Well, Randy left, but no owrries, we got this guy who lost two steps, drops 20% of the catchable balls thrown his way, and can tear up the locker room that needs to be rebuilt after last year."

Too much fantasy football at work among fans.

Okay, you meant "Why a team with Moss...." but we knew what you meant.

Last line is spot-on. Once you know the name you can hang onto it forever. I am hoping but not counting on Holt making an impact in NE... but as we keep pointing out, how many balls can there BE to catch? Holt may be there as a glorified route-running/technique coach. Weird how we're fixated on the bait that TO dangled recently.

Hey, I'm on-board if Bill is, but it would make my world a lot more comprehensible if he's not, let's put it that way. As to TO's body holding up at 37, it hasn't held up until now. He's such a head case we immediately think his crap season with Buffalo was because if his mental state, but his mental state could be being used to mask a guy who just can't get it done at that elite level. Want to buy a guy because he might have a place in the record books... in the part of his career where he's adding stats by pure longevity? I don't.

It's funny... we picked up Holt with no media fanfare etc. Same very broad outlines - a guy that in the last few years was a threat, but likely has too much wear on the tread to have a standout year now. Our reaction? yay. That's appropriate. Like I said elsewhere, Moss/Holt/TO? Are you kidding me? We would rule EVERY fantasy league ever to play in 2005. But it's 2010.

We're adding guys at wideout, and we have scored through both FA (Welker, Moss,) and the draft (Edelmensch.) There's reason to think Tate and Price have a future, but obviously we need to see something first. Regardless, at some point you're just creating a Donte Stallworth/Chad Jackson situation. We need to stop reacting to the 2006, Caldwell-as-#1 nightmare. Lack o' receivers is just not the problem in NE.

Re: How certain is it Moss leaves in 2011 ???

If the patriots are delusional enough to think that Moss is not a #1 receiver, then he will be a #1 receiver for another team. Fans often think that stars should play for next to nothing and take a one year contract.

With regard to TO, he has been a head case for several teams. He has finally realized that no one wants the burden of dealing with him now that he is on the downside of his career. If he did not ahve the attitude issues, he would already be playing opposite Ochocinco or Moss. TO still has the talent to contribute more than any of our outside receivers not named Moss. However, I think the decision was made months ago. We decided to go with Holt.

I don't think Moss will be here if he still wants to be paid as a #1 WR, but if he is willing to take a deal for a year or two, and will take a heavy pay drop.
