If this happens, Red Sox are dunzo.

Their top 4 pitchers overall would be better than ours...Sabathia and Lee are impossible to hit.

Sabbathia v. Lester edge: even

Lee v. Bucholz edge: yanks

Pettitte v. Beckett edge: yanks

Hughes v. Lackey edge: yanks

In other news, ESPN is reporting that Josh Beckett has developed a pimple on his rear and will miss the next 2 months.

if they get Lee, then the season is over

Looks like the season is over then because all indications point to this being a done deal.

I don't get why we couldn't have gotten him ourselves ... but whatever.

We might have that chance now. Looks like talks between the Yanks and Lee have broken down.

Lee to the Yankees and the season done? Get a grip would you. All that would have done was made them harder to beat. They're hardly unbeatable.

Either way this strengthens the Rangers into a real contender. Should be interesting.

As a baseball fan who likes the Yankees, a part of me is happy the deal fell through. Lee is a free agent at the end of the year, and the kid the Yanks were trading, Jesus Montero, is arguably the best hitting prospect in all of baseball. I hate to give up young players with that high a ceiling, for a 3 month rental. At any rate, if the Yankees did get Lee, it would have likely meant a 28th championship. Lee is money in the playoffs. This move makes Texas a contender. Lee will pitch twice in the 5 game, first round playoff series, which means Texas could easily knock it's opponent out. It's good for baseball in general.

This and its not like we can't get it done without Lee and its not like were not going to sign in the offseason:)

Very true. I think the Yankees have some question marks, but they did it last year using 3 pitchers in their playoff rotation, and they have all 3 back, plus Vasquez (pitching terrific since the end of May) and Hughes. The drop is with clutch players like Damon and Matsui gone. Still though, there is enough in the arsenault to win it all this year.

From everything I've read, Lee will likely be a Yankee. Obviously that's not a guarantee, as anything can happen in an offseason. Personally, I think signing Lee, will mean a possible trade of AJ Burnett. I'm not sure anyone would take on the amount of money he'd have left on his deal though (3 years @ around $50 million). I'm curious as to what Lee will be looking for, from teams this offseason. CC money? A Lackey type deal? I bet he looks for $20+ million per, over 5 or 6 years. Ouch.

they have pettite, sabathia and burnett coming back but burnett really is not that good. he pitched the game of his life in game 2 of the WS last year and that was all the yankees needed as pettitte and sabathia pitched well. Hughes basically has to step up for the yaks to repeat.

Given the rapid decline of Wakefield and Tito's insistence on using him we sure could use a Cliff Lee in the rotation about now.

God he's become useless.

Burnett's solid. He's simply feast or famine. He's either going 6 or 7 innings, and dominating, or he's talking to himself on the mound, as he gets blown up for 8 runs by the 2nd. He's terribly inconsistent. His stuff is really good, he just has no clue where his pitches are going when he lets them go. I'd say AJ is comparable to Lackey in terms of production. Burnett might have more overpowering stuff, but Lackey is the much more polished pitcher. Some might lean toward Lackey, which would be understandable. Over the year Lacket has had the better ERA.

Hughes will probably be in the bullpen in the playoffs, cuz of his 175 IP limit. So Vasquez, unless a trade is made, will likely be the Yankees #4 starter if they make the playoffs.
