Michael Lombardi reported Tuesday on NFL Network's Total Access that Welker is ahead of schedule.

Lombardi reported that Welker likely won't be a full participant when training camp opens on July 31, but that he's making enough progress that he'll probably be cleared for team workouts at some point during training camp.

Time for us to speculate whether or not Welker is a futuristic cyborg planted in the Patriots roster from Cyberdyne. Christ almighty, this guy is a machine.

I know. And the report suggests no PUP, because Lombardi clearly expects him to participate in camp practices at some point.

Dude's a freak, can't deny that. They showed him jogging around and doing drills at OTAs, he looked fine.

Hopefully he isn't ready by week 2.

Well, I feel pretty stupid betting on Gerry Callahan's advice that Welker was not only gone for the 2010 season, but his career may be over.

KKKallahan strikes again...

Well, no regular season PUP. If he's not ready to go on day one of TC (which Lombardi seems to imply), he goes on preseason PUP (the week 6 rule only applies if he's on PUP when final cutdowns are made).

:robot:

I've said this before, and I'll say it again:

If every Patriot had Wes Welker's sheer determination and work ethic, not only would the Patriots go undefeated, they'd make the 59-0 game against the Titans look like an absolute squeaker.

Not neccessarily. The likely case is that he ends up on the preseason PUP, but the Pats are under no obligations to put him on it. They have decided not to place players on the PUP who they expected to be ready in a week or two in the past.

Meant to say "can go", although I'm not sure why they wouldn't (I imagine there is a reason, but I can't think of one ATM).

Too bad Revis is only ONE man. The Pats do have OTHER receivers. And a pretty decent running game.. Well, they did when they had Mankins there..

Hmm.... I wonder if Faneca is still out there....

Great news to wake up to :)

But if he is a cyborg, don't tell the league bosses, they will probably take away all draft picks! God d%#*!@t ;)

I'm not gonna make any predictions about what this means for his timetable, I'm just happy that it continues to be good news and there have been no setbacks. Just keep pluggin', Wes...

I agree, ahead of schedule is a good 'prediction' for me :)

If this is the way it is and the way it stays (I like Lombardi's resources), BelichickFan would have been pretty much the only one among us right all along.

Does anyone think that Welker being ready week 1 could mean that Torry Holt gets cut? Seems like he was brought in to provide a proven possession type receiver with Wes out. If Wes is a go along with Moss & Edelman and the two young guys Tate & Price, it might be hard to keep Holt on the roster. I guess we'll have to wait and see how he fares in preseason.

No, I wouldn't be surprised to see Moss, Holt & Welker take to the field for the first Offensive snap of the regular season.

Not to pat my own back but, I said from day one that him being ready for opening day wasn't out of the question. I even quoted medical journal articles that tracked RBs and WRs in the NFL with ACL reconstructions that said that many had returned to close to 100% in seven months.

Keep in mind I never intended to say Welker WOULD be back for Week 1, I was just saying that based on the timing of Carson Palmer (I know, different position) and Braylon Edwards (different style WR) and combining that with Welker's work ethic and improved knowledge on ACL rehabs that it was fully reasonable that be COULD be back for not only Week 1 but also some preseason games. My gut feeling all along was that Welker would be able to play Week 1 if it were a playoff game but would probably sit out (not PUPed) the first 4 games, get a freebee Week 5 then return after the bye but be able to practice the whole time. That still wouldn't surprise me but Week 1 is also looking more likely now.

Actually, all reports says that Holt is going to be used outside whether Welker returns or not. Holt will most likely get the Branch role which is lining up outside and taking the short to intermediate routes.
