And this wasn't some 30-second mimicking that Payton played for laughs in front of his team, either. Oh, no. He worked at it, watching film of a Belichick interview to get his tone and mannerisms down right, dressing the part, and even talking to current Saints and ex-Patriots Randall Gay, Heath Evans and David Thomas to quiz them on how Belichick would dissect New Orleans in preparing his Patriots to play that coming Monday night in the Superdome.

"I made a careful note of how he scrunched up his face and how he tilted his head,'' Payton writes of Belichick. "I became Bill Belichick. The hair greased over to the side and darkened. The blue hoodie with the New England Patriots logo. The khakis and the tennis shoes.

Interesting excerpt from Payton's book about how he made a video of himself pretending to be BB and dissecting the Saints weaknesses BB-style prior to the Pats game. Imitation is the highest form of flattery, right?

I would love to see this video.

If there was any other coach in the league I would want coaching the Patriots, this would be the guy.

Something tells me he has total respect for BB and BB respects him.

"To get the voice right, I went on NFL.com Tuesday night and listened to Mike Lombardi interviewing Bill. Listened three or four times until I had that flat, tightly wound, slightly psycho-sounding monotone exactly right.

If Belichick HAD any respect for Payton, I think it's gone now. I don't think the greased hair and psycho-sounding monotone voice comments are exactly endearing signs of respect.

My God! The man is obsessed.

I don't think the greased hair and psycho-sounding monotone voice comments are exactly endearing signs of respect.

I thought the same thing. To me those characterizations ruined an otherwise respectful and fun story. I don't know if someone coached him to be more colorful in his writing or what, but he went a bit overboard.

If you all really think BB is going to care that he is called "slightly psycho-sounding" or have greased to the side hair then you guys really don't get it.

we all know if you listen to him when he is with the full press he does sound slightly physco nad i am betting its on purpose.

as for the hair comment i am guessing that he had to do it to look like BB

I thought it said "irritates" at first.:D

If some of you think Bill would be all butt hurt over these revelations, I think it's your own delicate sensitivity.

BB has a great sense of humor and would probably play the tape for the team if he had a copy. Yes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Gags and imitations are part of the camaraderie of team sports. If you don't think BB has a closetful of Parcells imitations from the old days, you're crazy.

Lighten up, Francis.

I thought Urban Meyer was supposed to be the next coach of the Patriots. ;)

Agree 100%. I can't imagine BB being offended at all, and I'm sure he'd play the video as well if he could get a copy.

Considering we have joint practices with the Saints, it suggests BB has a healthy amount of respect for the Saints and Payton. It'd be even better if BB showed up doing a Sean Payton impression...

I don't think BB would be offended by this, imitation is the highest form of flattery after all.

That being said, I think Payton missed the point. BB would never play dress up and work on his imitation of another coach, he would be preparing for how to beat the other team.

Payton must have known how bad they were going to beat us and needed something to do with his spare time.

Yea, Payton respects BB allot, the flattery comes from Payton modeling the team after the Patriots, I think it was just one of Paytons motivational things to desensitize the team. I mean common, BB and the Pats are a ominous figure to be looking at across the field. I think BB respects Payton because he knows what its like to be under Parcells, and you dont last long if you suck.

As Ive said here before, the Patriots are also respected fans down here, you proved that with your character, nothing would give us more pleasure than to play them in a SB. We have a long way to go to achieve that consistent level of play, and so does Payton we are not oblivious to the facts, but it would be a good SB, and fun. BB might have effected Payton, but we saw champion fans also in New Orleans, they effected us. You represent your team well.

Were still going to kick your but:)

Cool article I read awhile ago.

on a side note, hilarious video of Brees created awhile ago, didnt think anyone saw it, its a funny vid made off of a Japanese movie, funny but cool. Sometimes we go to far,lol

Love him or hate him, Parcells has to have the greatest coaching "tree" in NFL history.

We've done that before and I don't remember the other bests, maybe Tom Landry.

I don't think anyone so far on this thread has described this as anything but a hilarious part of the locker-room fun of the NFL so I don't know who you're aiming at.

You could start with me, though. :)

Speaking quite personally, I'm starting to think that Sean Payton may or may not be a great football coach but that he's also an obvious d*ckhead. It started when I read the story about the bottle of wine. Here's the story for anyone who doesn't know it.

At the scouting combine, Jerry Jones had made a reservation at the best restaurant in Indianapolis [insert Midwest gourmet joke here] and reserved a magnum of a particular wine. Payton and his staff went there the day before, drank the reserved bottle and left a c*cky note behind for Jones. Funny? If you think taking what's been promised to somebody else and boasting about it is funny, I suppose so -- but to me, it's just about being a c*cky ass-hole. Since the story was printed by that master of independent investigation (not) Peter King, I think it's pretty safe to say that Payton told him the story too.

Now we have the story of how Payton's humour "knocked the ball out of the park" with his team. Maybe, it's a cultural thing but if you hate people who laugh at their own jokes, what about people who tell us all how funny they were six months later when they rush out a book after winning a Superbowl?

OK then, to me Payton looks like a complete d*ckhead who's channelling Rex Ryan much more than Bill Belichick. (Would BB make fun of people in the locker-room? For sure. Would he boast about it outside? You've got to be kidding.)

But perhaps he's still a great football coach, anyway. After all, you don't have to be a fine human being to be a great coach (Paul Brown, for instance).

So here's the problem that he has and BB doesn't: what next? If you're going to rely on gimmicks to get your team gee-ed up, you have to keep freshening up the act, and that's hard. What can he do next? Dress up in drag and act as a hostess on the team plane? ;)

(Oh, and by the way, I think that Matt Light's pranking of Buddy Farnham was hilarious -- cruel but hilarious.)

I dont really know what your basing this off of, I mean I respect your opinion, but stats are stats. Payton is an offensive coach, and hes been in N.O. sense 2006.
In that time the Saints have gone from dead last to the top #1-4 offense for 4 consecutive years. His playbook is mind boggling with over 5000-7000 plays broken into 500 or so formations, all of witch are crated to look like 70 plays. The reason he did this was so that 1 play that looked the same to a defensive captain, from down to down, could be anyone one of a 1000 outcomes. Im not completely accurate on this, but this is what we have learned.

He did not run the defense well so he gave up part of his paycheck to get G.W., that sounds like a smart guy to me, knowing when your not good at something.
And he hand picked the team and lets guys go when he has too, like Duece, when others teams would not ( why LT Jets). Most of our receivers where nobodies but Payton say something in them, PT was a nobody. So he seems to have and eye for talent. He increased the the talent scouts, at high schools and colleges, so that only the Patriot have as many as we do.

So Im not sure where you don't think he's any good. He's make progress and produced a consistent offensive team.

-he's also an obvious d*ckhead. It started when I read the story about the bottle of wine. -
Jerry Jones is a friend of his, if you research more, you will find it really was a joke and JJ is fine with it, this was blown out by the press.
Payton probably is egotistic, I think most HC are, that includes BB. I think you have to be. Im sure him smiling when he has beat a team really pisses the opposing fans off, but hes also young and is going to make those kind of mistakes.
Is he a d*ckhead, lol, no. Why would he give a hoot about us fans if he was? Why would he constantly give kudos to teams like the Patriots if he was? or Parcels? anyone? he wouldn't.

Payton is not BB. Payton does motivational stuff before every game, and hes not a very serious guy, unless you don't do what you were told to do. Look at the SB Bell forgot his cleats , Payton yelled at him swore, and then blamed it on himself, that sound like a D*head?

Truth is Payton will never be as good as BB, but hes trying, and that's exactly what he wants to be. Sense he's not BB he's going to make mistakes, lots of them, I don't think he gets the whole press thing yet. But all in all Payton didn't have to make the team do anything for us at all, or slow down so we could thank them at the airport. Hes not a D*head, he might have a drinking problem, but then hes in the perfect city where no one will notice.:)

My opinion , is yes, Payton has and ego and doesn't think sometime, hes not a perfect proper coach, and thats going to rub some people the wrong way. What I usually do before I expend the energy to not like someone is to research them. Here is a couple of links on the subject. I dont think BB would give the time of day to someone he doesn't like. Huh? The bottle of wine story was funny- the whole point was that Jerry Jones and Payton are friends from Payton's time with the Cowboys. Man, some of you guys are super-sensitive, I guess none of you ever give your buddies a hard time?

Misunderstanding here -- but I'm not sorry to have all of that information. I said he may or may not be a GREAT coach. What I meant is that he's certainly a very good one. Anyone who wins a Superbowl has to be pretty good but to do it with a franchise that has been as dysfunctional as the Saints is remarkable. No quarrel there. If I were a Saints fan, I'd be as overwhelmed with my good fortune at having him as you obviously are. (And I agree with the point about hiring Williams -- realizing one's own limitations is an important quality in anyone who is surrounded by as many flatterers as an NFL coach.)

I continue not to find the JJ incident really hilarious. There are plenty of ways to prank JJ without stealing his wine -- ask Matt Light. And then there's telling everyone afterwards what a funny guy you are. Maybe it's just me, but it doesn't swing for me.

But look, this is an internet message board -- it's just my opinion and, you know, like ... everyone has one. No disrespect intended to the (for a short while still) World Champion New Orleans Saints.

Oh thats , cool, we dont know if he will ever be GREAT either, the odds are not in his favor, we'll see next year, and yes we all have beer goggles on:), wouldn't you after our dismal past?

Im not going to convince any one of anything, but he has some poor judgment. I don't think we will see that change. Paytons going to be Payton. I know hes a good guys tho. Im serious tho if your research the JJ wine thing, you'll find they are friends and he ate with them later.
I personally think that no one is liked by everyone, just not possible, everyone irritates someone,
And your opinion is greatly respected on this.

Right! I only went to NO once but I couldn't help see that everywhere there was GO TIGERS! and purple and yellow. No mention of the 'Aints.

Of course the Pats have had a "dismal past" too (I became a fan after a 2-14 season!) Their "dismal past" turned around when they got a new owner. For Payton to turn it around under the current ownership is even more of an achievement. So perhaps he is a pr*ck and perhaps he is a great coach. Many great coaches certainly are.

Think of the Paul Brown/Bill Walsh story. Walsh was hoping to move on and become a Head Coach but always missed out. It turns out that Brown was saying negative things about him in order to keep him! To that story I can only say: what a pr*ck! But great coach ... perhaps the greatest.

BB, oddly enough (although I wouldn't like to be married to him) seems to me to be a very decent human being (he would never do what Brown did to Walsh -- just the opposite) and Walsh himself seems to have been amazingly likeable for someone in such a tough business. So we'll wait and see with Payton. In the meantime, you're lucky to have him and you should enjoy the ride.

Besides us hard core fans, the Saints where the revival of our city from the hurricane. I get most don't understand that, and our sick of it, but they where literally our only hope to feel good.
So it kind of built after, I think you can see how that happens, that and our faith in the American people became stronger, they helped us.

I look at new believers of the Saints after 2004 and smile myself sometimes, then correct myself. Those days are very ingrained in our minds, so much so the literature and videos changed. It became a holy quest , if you think of it that way, the same determination, belief a woman gets to make her baby walk, its going to no matter what, and they all do.
For a people that could not win at anything, education and wealth. To believe in the biggest losers in the NFL. It was hope, they called it faith. Thats why that happened, most latched on to the first thing that worked, weirdly enough it was the laughing stock of the NFL. Saints. It worked.

The videos tell more than I can ever explain, things are created out of a void it was a cultural change, they are evidence of proof of what I so badly just explained. :) People where trying to express there anger, tired of being a loser, and desperation. From what I said you cant feel the horror or desperation of that moment, when it was all gone, everything, that's your reason for why no more GO TIGERS! , and all saints. Im not sure I explained that well or am helping you at all, lol, but did the best I could.

To watch how a city is feeling sometimes you just need to see the Art that is produced during those times. Its why Art is relevant I think. Otherwise why would someone spend the time to create their interpretation of a feeling?

Walsh was brilliant, he stole the WC offense from his coach at the browns, but he made it work.
As much as BB is hated by many other teams, and I have been warned by your own on this because we're newbees, because fans that don't take the time to understand him for what he is,
I think Payton will be hated the same. BB and Brady have one more SB to equal TB and the Steelers, and one more to eclipse it. We wish you all the luck with that, we really do, beside NE I know NO would be proud of your teams accomplishment, we are just trying to make a name for ourselves at this point.

and thanks , you have a right to your opinion and taking no offense

I was there after the hurricane (Feb. 2008, I think) and I saw a lot of the things that you mention: the demeanour of people, their determination and buoyancy. What's more, I found people incredibly hospitable -- and not just in the tourist industry. I went to a Mardi Gras block party with some local friends and the sense of everyone pitching in (all ages, 8 to 80) and having a good time with everyone welcome was priceless.

That said, they were all interested in LSU and basketball (and one black guy who was an administrator at Tulane who was passionate about College Hockey!) not the poor old Saints. Well, of course, that has changed.
