Re: Chris Simms: Busted for DUI Marijuana

It doesn't say anything about him smoking while driving, all it describes is how he looked and the fact he had slurred speech. Where's the marijuana or the alcohol level? Chris must've admitted he'd been smoking before he drove and driving while impaired is indeed a crime.

That's too bad tho.

Big deal, he smoked a joint. I'm no pothead, but you can smoke a helluva lot of weed before even coming close to the same level of impaired-ness that drunken driving would entail.

inb4 huge marijuana debate.

Simms reeked of marijuana and admitted to officers he had smoked earlier in the car, a source said.

Never, ever, talk to the police beyond providing necessary identification information, asking why you have been detained, and asking for your lawyer.

His car probably reeked of it. Why these guys can't wait until they get home to spark it up is beyond me.

I got out of a sure-fire DUI that way when I was way younger. They pulled me over (I won't go into why, but it wasn't because I was swerving all over the road... something had happened at the club I was at). Immediately, I pulled out my cigarettes (smoked back then), lit one up, gave him my I.D., made VERY limited eye contact, and only gave him one word "yes" or "no" answers. In the end, he said that he didn't detect alcohol on me and would let me go but if I HAD been drinking, to pull over and call a sober friend to pick me up. He walked back to his car and I pulled into he nearest parking lot, took the keys out of my car, and called a friend. The cop pulled into the parking lot across from me to watch me until my friend picked me up and took me home.

That was the last time I drove with any level of alcohol in my system.

Since this was a checkpoint stop, the impaired judgment to volunteer to a police officer that you'd been smoking some joints before driving was impairment enough.

Re: Chris Simms: Busted for DUI Marijuana

Oddly enough, his brother Matt Simms was suspended while at the University of Louisville for marijuana use, and he subsequently transferred out. :bricks:

I could not agree with you less.

Dope drastically diminishes spatial and temporal judgement - precisely what you need to drive a car safely. Although it is impossible to get objective figures (not least because smoking drivers are often also drunk drivers) all the signs are that it is even worse than alcohol.

Chris could certainly had been our 2008 Starting Quarterback replacement if Cassel had not shown glimpses of talent,He was almost here but sent home.

Not sure where you get your information from, would like to know. I'm sure its my imagination that I'm a great driver when I'm stoned. Oh, there is no F'N WAY smoking impairs your driving more then drinking. Sounds like some personal bias.

I don't know, there is just something about driving and smoking that goes together for me. Then again, when I did it, it was usually on the back roads and I took precausions (windows down, air freshener, one dube, etc.)

Re: Chris Simms: Busted for DUI Marijuana

How do you get busted on West Houston Street for smoking reefer? It's Greenwich Village, for crissakes. I betcha I can walk alongside him on the that sidewalk and spark up 1000 times over and never get a second glance.
Musta been that white albino blonde hair. You can spot it a mile away.

Re: Chris Simms: Busted for DUI Marijuana

Follow up:

His attorney is claiming that he 'admitted' to cigarettes, not pot, and is trying to throw unnamed passengers under the bus:

"My client never admitted to smoking marijuana that night. He said he was smoking cigarettes that night," said Simms’ attorney, Nathan Semmel....

Um, No. this is a pile of crap. There is plenty of figures on it. Look it up if you are going to make a claim.

I did that when I was 16. Since I've moved out on my own, I prefer to wait until I get home to spark up. Nothing wrong with what you're doing, it's just a different strokes sort of thing. By the way - I'm a worse driver when I'm ripped than when I've got a buzz going.

Re: Chris Simms: Busted for DUI Marijuana

FWIW, most of the studies I've seen boil down to the idea that marijuana doesn't impair driving in anything like the way alcohol does. But there are some effects: pot-smoking drivers have impaired night vision, and compensate for their general stoned-ness by driving much more slowly than everybody else. IOW, it kind of turns you into the 90-year-old lady I saw inching her car into Davis Square today.

Overall, the impairment hierarchy looks something like this:

Texting > Way drunk > Talking on hand-held phone > Moderately drunk = Talking on hands-free phone > On pot > Fully alert.

But West Houston Street can be a harrowing place to drive in any condition. Partially because the pedestrians are all drunk, high, texting and talking on cell phones.

Re: Chris Simms: Busted for DUI Marijuana

I'll be real about it, after I spark up some spice while driving, that ****s get me simply gliding along on the road. Would I recomend driving real fast? No, your reaction time clearly is not the same. But smoking is perfect if your cool with cruising in the cruise lane, not trying to be a speed racer. Smoking while driving isn't as dangerous as alcohol IF your tolerance is high enough AND you don't smoke TOO much.

LMAO at a marijuanna DUI. That's just asking to get laughed at in court. There's honestly no way to verify anyone was high while driving. His car smelt like it? He could have smoked 2 days before and his car could still be smellin.
