Re: offtopic: Football games in 3D.. BE EXCITED

Jeez, I'm not some sort of Luddite. But most of the things that matter on a TV screen aren't short and wide. Football fields are the exception. I'm not gonna buy a TV that's good for one type of program and not as good for the other 99% of programs. I'm a football fan but it isn't the only thing I watch.

3D will be amazing for Sports, Movies, PS3 Games, concerts, HBO/Showtime, UFC, etc.

I imagine stuff like CNN news reports and the weather channels won't be worth watching in 3D though :rocker:

Re: offtopic: Football games in 3D.. BE EXCITED

Those glasses are a real pain for people who wear glasses. Guess I have to have lasiks.

Re: offtopic: Football games in 3D.. BE EXCITED

Personally, I feel that 3D is the most overrated technology going. It was great in Avatar, but half the other movies which use the technology is just crap and more distracting tham visually compelling. I don't know if I really care about football in 3D either.

I do have a feeling that like in the 1950s, 3d might be a passing fad.
Avatar was made with the intent of being 3-D from the get go, and was filmed accordingly. Most of the so-called "3-D" movies that have come out since then are simply movies that were originally intended to be in 2-D but, following Avatar's success, they decided to retrofit in some 3-D special effects. That's why it worked so well in Avatar and so poorly in other films. (Yeah, I'm looking at you, Mr. Clash of the Titans.)

I personally don't go for 3-D and won't be watching football in it. If other people want to, more power to 'em.

......OK. OK, a cheerleader cam choice would be nice too.
Hmmm. Cheerleader cam with X-ray vision. Then I wont care about not seeing the defensive backfield.

Re: offtopic: Football games in 3D.. BE EXCITED

I prefer watching movies/tv in 2d. If I wanted to see a game in 3d I'd either go play in one my self, or go to a live one.

So was Alice in Wonderland and it was a unmittigated mess. There has been a dozen or so movies that have been released in the last couple of years that were shot in 3D and none of them brought anything to the movie that could have been filmed in 2D. I understand movies like Clash of Titans were done after it was filmed which was a disaster.

What worked with Avatar was that James Cameron created such a rich world for the movie that it benefitted from the 3D enhancements. If it wasn't for the huge leaps in CGI technology that Cameron and ILM created, it would be like most other 3D movies which is basically a marketing gimmick. Avatar is one in a lmillion movie though.

This answers one of my questions.

I have a lazy eye that pulls when I get tired or just don't pay careful enough attention to it. To enjoy 3D at this point I would need eye surgery. Until that changes, I'll stick with HD.

Re: offtopic: Football games in 3D.. BE EXCITED

Jeez, I'm not some sort of Luddite. I've got a pretty cool SFF computer (that I helped build) and plenty of other assorted electronic doodads. I like new technology as much as the average guy. But most of the things that matter on a TV screen aren't short and wide. Human faces, human bodies, gorgeous babes <g>. All taller than wide. Football fields are the exception. I'm not gonna buy a TV that's good for one type of program and not as good for the other 99% of programs. I'm a football fan but it isn't the only thing I watch.

Our peripheral vision is wider than it is tall, so it's more useful to have screens be wider than they are tall. You wouldn't be able to see everything going on on-screen as well otherwise. Furthermore, this also means that when making screen wider (to a point) you aren't losing anything vertically; you're just getting the benefit of wider view. To understand how this is useful in things other than football, check out this website - Aspect Ratio FAQ

With young kids the only type of movies I get to see anymore are cartoons. I have to say, these kick ass in 3-D. How to Train Your Dragon was awesome in 3D and felt like a total immersive experience. If they could make most programs even half as good then I might be in.

Re: offtopic: Football games in 3D.. BE EXCITED

They are working on real 3D TVs that won't require those piece of **** glasses just to watch. The 3D TVs that are out now are 1) pieces of **** and 2) are just working people for money with crappy technology that has been out for YEARS.

The TVs that don't require glasses is passive 3D and is supposably is crap not much better 3D quality than what you could get prior to TVs with 3D capabilities and you wore the paper glasses with the red and green. The current passive 3D TVs in development suffer from picking up a lot of the depth of field that even the current versions with glasses have.

I can't speak to the quality of the current crop of 3D ready TVs, but anyone who is holding out for a passive, non-3D glasses version is going to be very diapointed. I am not a huge 3D fan, but I would buy a current 3D TV with the glasses over a passive version that doesn't require glasses any day. They are years away from developing a 3D TV that doesn't require glasses that will give you the same quality of 3D as one that requires glasses (assuming they ever develop one).

Haven't seen many of the Pixar and other animated 3D movies, but a movie like Alice in Wonderland sacrificed characterization, plot, and heart for pretty pictures and 3D gimmickery. Granted that could describe any Tim Burton movie over the last decade or two minus the 3D.

I never saw Alice in Wonderland (in either format) so I will gladly take your word for it.

Well a $400 million budget combined with one of the brightest, most innovative directors in the biz is a good combination. :D

Re: offtopic: Football games in 3D.. BE EXCITED

The only good thing about 3DTV becoming mainstream, is the rest of us that don't care, can get a shiny brand-new non-3D flat panel TV for pennies on the dollar.

So I say let it become popular!

Indeed. 3D tv's are shyte.

If you want to sit in your own room and look like a clown in those glasses, please do so.

Then when you get a visit, the rest of the room can look at a blurry screen because you're a douche for not buying more pairs of shoddy glasses.

Re: offtopic: Football games in 3D.. BE EXCITED

I think people should really embrass the TV's. I didn't jump on HDTV till last year and I now can't watch regular tv. HD changes everything about the viewing of a sporting events. I know whos on the field and where the ball really is. I can wait for 3D tvs to become afforable. I will jump on in the next 2 years when the price drops and the quailty goes up. Just look at the way HD has dropped and the quailty has gone though the roof.

Re: offtopic: Football games in 3D.. BE EXCITED

i recently had this conversation with someone and compared it to gaming going from 2D to 3D graphics. at first there was a lot of crap and a lot of games which focused on 3D graphics at the expense of gameplay. but now quality 3D graphics are a way of life and we don't even think about it anymore.

So was Alice in Wonderland and it was a unmittigated mess.

alice in wonderland wasn't filmed using 3D cameras. from wikipedia: Alice in Wonderland (2010 film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Burton and Zanuck chose to film with conventional cameras, and convert the footage into 3D during post-production; Zanuck explained 3D cameras were too expensive and "clumsy" to use, and they felt that there was no difference between converted footage and those shot in the format.[57] James Cameron, who released his 3D film Avatar in December 2009, criticized the choice, stating, "It doesn't make any sense to shoot in 2-D and convert to 3-D".[58]

I stand corrected, but at least they filmed always with the intention to convert it. Besides, the 3D imaging wasn't the problem with the movie. My problem with 3D is with the very rare exception (even whe it is filmed correctly) it really doesn't add anything to the movie other than a gimmick.

Personally, I think a lot of movies would suffer from 3D. Any good drama like say The Godfather would be cheapened by the experience. I think for many movies tradition 2D, high stock film makes the movie more rich and satisfying. 3D only has a chance of working for action, sci-fi, animation, and horror. So far, the experiences have been mixed at best. I personally think only Avatar has worked, but I saw it in 2D too and it worked just as well in IMHO.

Re: offtopic: Football games in 3D.. BE EXCITED

Have you ever tried them with 3D TV?

If not, please dont judge without knowing. They're like sunglasses. You forget they are even on your face after watching for a couple minutes.

Have you even considered for a brief moment the other far more informative technological things that could be done to improve enjoyment of football than puting on goofy glasses for some trendy WOW effect?

Today's 3D technology sucks, as do the Jets. When it's ready for prime time and not a gimmick to sell high priced electronics, call me.

And I'm not a technophobe. I simply exercize judgement vs hype. I spent thousands to buy a top quality early HDTV for watching the Pats 1st SB run in HD.

Now, back to your job selling TVs at Best Buy.

Re: offtopic: Football games in 3D.. BE EXCITED

Pardon my stupid questions:

1) Does it have that stupid short/wide aspect ratio of HDTVs? That's the main reason I'm avoiding HDTV till I no longer have a choice. I don't care how clear or realistic a picture is if on closeups it cuts off the tops of the heads and chins of actors to show a lot of dead (but pretty) space on the sides.

Oh good lord... widescreen doesn't cut off the top and bottom my friend, full screen cuts off the sides.

Sure, that's one application of HDTV where the aspect ratio is an advantage. But I watch football maybe a few hours on Sunday, Monday and sometimes Thursday between late August and early February. I watch many, many other things at all other times of the year. I'll gladly wait for the camera to pan from QB to WR that tiny percentage of my TV watching time to avoid the problems of the short/wide aspect ratio 90-something percent of the time.

Again, other than maybe the news, I can't think of much that actually shoots in 4:3 format. If you are watching something in fullscreen, you are undoubtably losing out on something.

And 3D? Don't I have depth perception? I already thought I saw things in 3D. Are you trying to tell me that when I watch something on TV my brain is too stupid to realize depth and that I need an expensive TV and glasses to show me depth? This smells like a cheesy attempt to bilk me out of lots of money for a stupid fad. Also as others have said, what if you have people over, what if you go to someone's house, what if you switch from a game to the news, what if... am I supposed to have these glasses with me at all times or buy 6-10 pairs for my home in case I have guests? Or god forbid what if I sit on the glasses during halftime of the Super Bowl. Now I have to watch the 2nd half blurry? FML. Sorry but evolution gave me depth perception and it works just fine.
