:rocker:

I just got back from BestBuy where they had a 55" Sony 3D TV on display.

They have an option to watch everything from Sports to Movies to PlayStation 3 games.

They played OSU vs USC in 3D for me. I was blown away! :rocker: It's as if you have 50 yard seats and you're part of the crowd. Football looks great in 3D, although for some reason the Soccer game they showed me didn't look nearly as good. I'm assuming its because soccer games are zoomed out alot more while football is close up. The OSU vs USC game felt like I had the field right in front of me. It looks much better than regular HD. You can see the distance of a missed tackle, the openings in the OLine, much clearer and realistic than ever before.

I can't wait to see a Pats game in 3D. I was skeptical about 3D TV's and how sports would look on them. Now I'm sold. ESPN already has the first 3D channel, and I'm sure by 2011, every major channel will have a 3D station out so it's only a matter of time before football games are in 3D.

Do yourself a favor and go to your local BestBuy to check this technology out. I definitely was not disappointed. Whether you like it or not, 3D is going to be a huge part of the future. Just thought Id share that with everyone and give you something to look forward to as there won't be much news these next few weeks :)

Gah, 3D.

I keep praying this doesn't catch on, but it just keeps getting more and more popular/mainstream.

The reason being, i can't see out of my right eye, and thus can't see in 3D.

Re: offtopic: Football games in 3D.. BE EXCITED

The only good thing about 3DTV becoming mainstream, is the rest of us that don't care, can get a shiny brand-new non-3D flat panel TV for pennies on the dollar.

So I say let it become popular!

I like how people judge things without even giving it a chance! You dont care because you havn't seen a football game in 3D yet.

Once you do, you will change your mind. trust me. I wasnt crazy about 3D either. Once they played that OSU vs USC game in 3D for me, I was converted lol :rocker:

Oh yes it does have its benefits. For example the 2D showings of films are always empty :D

Re: offtopic: Football games in 3D.. BE EXCITED

Pardon my stupid questions:

1) Does it have that stupid short/wide aspect ratio of HDTVs? That's the main reason I'm avoiding HDTV till I no longer have a choice. I don't care how clear or realistic a picture is if on closeups it cuts off the tops of the heads and chins of actors to show a lot of dead (but pretty) space on the sides.

2) Do you have to wear any glasses or anything like that to get the effect?

3) Is it highly position specific? Did you have to stand/sit a specific distance from the TV, or not move much from perpendicular to keep the effect?

Thanks :)

Well the prices for these TV's are still exorbitant. Once the prices go down, I have a feeling that the vast majority of people will be owning these things. I'll most certainly be one of them.

Wait. So you prefer that 4x3 aspect for football where you can;t even see the wide receivers or dbacks on any given play because they are off screen?

Holy crap, if HD TV was tailor made for anything it was for live football.

I don't know about 3D, but if you haven't taken a liking to HD I don't know what to say.

Re: offtopic: Football games in 3D.. BE EXCITED

Does anyone in here really want to feel like Rex Ryan is in your living room?

I don't

Especially if a fresh new bag of Doritos is next to you

Some people are opposd to anything new. There was a huge resistance to computers by writers back in the late 70's early 80's. Cell phones were supposed to fry your brain, color TV made you go blind if you sat too close to them, seat belts are bad because you cannot get thrown clear if you get in an accident. I'm sure in my grandfather's day, peope said automobiles sucked and that horses and buggies were better.

Re: offtopic: Football games in 3D.. BE EXCITED

HD is terrific HOWEVER football insists on showing space BEHIND the offensive backfield at the expense of showing the defensive backfield lineup. WTF?

3D will not make it until we don't need goofy glasses. They suck. Sorta like the Jets.

What they should do is interactively let the viewer select what he wishes to see on the screen. Multiple view choices. Move the camera, etc. HDTV cameras are cheap. Provide many viewpoint selections and let us choose. Don't force us to watch the crowd or Tubby Rex. Let us watch the D geting aligned if we so choose. Let us focus on the DB alignment instead of 10 yds behind the RBs.

OK. OK, a cheerleader cam choice would be nice too.

Wow, this sounds amazing. I still can't even get HD here. Whenever I'm back home and see football in HD my pants get tight. I can't wait for the 3D experience.

Re: offtopic: Football games in 3D.. BE EXCITED

Personally, I feel that 3D is the most overrated technology going. It was great in Avatar, but half the other movies which use the technology is just crap and more distracting tham visually compelling. I don't know if I really care about football in 3D either.

I do have a feeling that like in the 1950s, 3d might be a passing fad.

1. Not from what I saw. The football game and the PS3 games they showed me were full screen.

2. Yes, you wear glasses. They look and feel like Oakley sunglasses.

3. Not at all. I was standing, moving side to side and it looked fine.

:rocker:

I suggest checking out you local Electronics big box store. BestBuy, CircuitCity, or whoever is in your area. They all have them on display where I live.

Heck No.

Our generation looks back at older generations and laughs because they watched in black and white.

One day the next generation will be laughing at us for watching in 2D.

Have you ever tried them with 3D TV?

If not, please dont judge without knowing. They're like sunglasses. You forget they are even on your face after watching for a couple minutes.

Sure, that's one application of HDTV where the aspect ratio is an advantage. But I watch football maybe a few hours on Sunday, Monday and sometimes Thursday between late August and early February. I watch many, many other things at all other times of the year. I'll gladly wait for the camera to pan from QB to WR that tiny percentage of my TV watching time to avoid the problems of the short/wide aspect ratio 90-something percent of the time.

Jeez, I'm not some sort of Luddite. I've got a pretty cool SFF computer (that I helped build) and plenty of other assorted electronic doodads. I like new technology as much as the average guy. But most of the things that matter on a TV screen aren't short and wide. Human faces, human bodies, gorgeous babes <g>. All taller than wide. Football fields are the exception. I'm not gonna buy a TV that's good for one type of program and not as good for the other 99% of programs. I'm a football fan but it isn't the only thing I watch.

Dont worry, they got stem cells for that now.
