The Bruins made a big trade to try to bolster their offense, sending Dennis Wideman, the 15th pick in this year's draft, and a 3rd round pick in next year's draft to Florida in exchange for Gregory Campbell and Nathan Horton.

Panthers deal Horton, Campbell to B's for Wideman, picks - 2010 Offseason News

Horton gives them between 20 and 30 goals and 45 and 62 points per year...That amount is roughly the same amount of points they were going to get from Phil Kessel so the claimed scoring hole that losing him created is closed in more ways than one.

Recchi - Wheeler - Ryder and Satan ... enuff said there.

Satan is a savvy vet as is Recchi ... but neither is a front line winger.

Horton - if healthy will score 30-35 goals this year playing with Savard.

As for Ryder and Wheeler ... can we get a bucket of pucks for them. :confused2:

Seriously Ryder is fine for a 2nd or 3rd line winger but he's not top line material.

The 15th pick might have gotten us a future defender ... emphasis on future and this team is still on the cusp of getting to the Stanley Cup.

Campbell can score as well, and is not afraid to get physical in the game.

They still have a 2nd 2nd rounder this year, so they could be going defense with it.

This is a Great trade for the bruins.....Horton scored 20 goals last season while missing 2 months with an injury....I agree he will score in the mid 30's and fill our void at winger....With either seguin or hall coming in to we should add to the scoring punch and losing Wideman isn't a big deal.....I really like this trade and think this will be huge for us next season....

Horton's 25 years old, signed for 3 more years, is a former #3 overall pick, and has scored 20+ goals (30+ once I think) for 5 consecutive seasons. The Panthers are a terrible team too, missing the playoffs for 9 straight years. There's reason to believe that Horton could be a regular 30+ scorer on this team, where he'll be surrounded by better top to bottom talent. That's the good. The bad is that it's been said that he has zero heart, and more or less quit on the Panthers at times. Whether or not that is true, or if true, whether or not that changes now that he's in a more intense market in Boston, will have to be seen.

In terms of value, I think it's a good trade for both teams. The B's get a young, controlled goal scoring wing, with room to grow (former #3 pick and only 25), for a talented, but inconsistent top 4 defensemen, as well as a 1st round draft pick. From Florida's end, they give away a talented guy, who asked to be traded, but recieved a hard to find commodity in Wideman, who is a puck moving defenseman. The pick helps them to rebuild through the draft, which is what their new GM did when he put together the current Blackhawks team, that just won the cup. I think Wideman could flourish in Florida, where the fans won't be booing him, and the pressure isn't as intense. When he plays with confidence, Wideman is a talented Dman. Weak on the puck, but offensively gifted for sure. Good move for both teams, especially since the B's have picks, but need proven scoring.

I like the trade, but think they gave up too much. And I'm not sure there's anybody on the roster better than Wideman moving the puck. Hopefully Hunwick makes the leap this year and Boychuk re-signs.

I think Dennis Sidenburg is as good as Wideman at moving the puck around. He does it with fewer mistakes too, while be a superior defensive player. What sucks is that the B's were looking at Sidenburg last year in FA, but instead opted for Derrick Morris. What a bad move that was.

Wideman had a subpar year, but what about the previous two? He looked pretty good. It's funny that just a little while ago we gave up a 30-goal scorer in Boyes to get Wideman because we needed someone to carry the puck. Maybe in 4 years we'll trade Horton go get a D-man to carry the puck.

I don't think we needed to throw in the #15 pick to get a guy who was demanding a trade. Wideman and a 2nd rounder should have been plenty.

I am hearing that Boston will trade #2 to Edmonton for Hemsky and Eberle. Pure rumor.

I hated the Boyes for Wideman trade when it happened, and I still hate it now. Wideman is a good mover of the puck, but he's too soft on the pill in the defensive end. He was very good a year ago, when they finished in 1st place. The year prior he was a mixed bag I thought, very inconsistent. This past season we got it all. Flashes of brilliance, combined with plays that made your head spin. I wish him the best. I met him personally, as he's buddies with a close friend of mine, and he genuinely seemed like a cool guy. If he can't play comfortably in Florida, then he won't anywhere else.

From what I gather, there is very little difference from the talent level at #15, to the talent that will be available at #45. That's what I've been reading anyway. So I'm not too disappointing in the draft pick price in aquiring Horton. Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer to selecting at #15, than #30-something (Toronto's pick that we own), but I think there will be plenty of good talent left in the 30's. I'll be interested to see the mock drafts, compared to the actual draft results. I bet there will be a few players slated to go in the teens, that end up being there in the 30's. As an aside, have any of you seen the draft history of the 15th overall pick? It's ugly to say the least. Not that such a history matters the next year, but it is sometimes interesting to look at such things.

Where did you see that, at The Onion? There is no way that the Bruins trade the #2 overall pick. The only way they would trade it, is for a Crosby, Kane, Stamkos, etc. which we all know isn't happening. Aside from that, the only way they trade it to Edmonton, is if it's for the #1 overall pick, so they can draft Taylor Hall, and leave the Oilers with Tyler Seguin. While somewhat possible, I don't think that's happening either. There's a 95% likelyhood that the Bruins will select Tyler Seguin with the #2 pick, a 4.999% chance that they swap picks with Edmonton, and a .0001% chance, that they move the pick altogether.

I'll file that next to the horsesh!t Spezza rumors. The Bruins CAN'T take on those salaries (although Eberle's on the cheap...and I do like him). I don't know why you'd trade a potential future star like Hall or Seguin whom is going to make about 3 million over the next three years for Spezza, and 7 million per season, or Hemsky, who's contract I don't know about, but I'm sure it's at least 4 million. You can't do it and build a winning hockey team. You need those affordable guys wherever you can get them to counterbalance the expensive ones.

Seguin with the #2 pick tonight...rumors flying that they may be moving Thomas or Savard to dump salary and dump a now excess player.

Don't really need Thomas now that Raask has proven himself. Don't need Savard anymore now th at they have Seguin. Either case they get depth in a needed position, best case they get a top caliber player in a similar scenario on another team.

When Seguin is scoring 70-90 points a year, then I'll agree. To say that he makes Savard expendable is absurd to me.

They played well without Savard. When he was back after his injury they got one goal and two assists from him. They can afford to lose him if it means they pick up a scoring winger that they have needed for a while.

Savard is beloved, but he isn't irreplaceable.

I'm with Heat on this one. Savard isn't expendable. He's a point per game, top line center. Those don't grow on trees. This is a team that couldn't score to enough to win a 3-0 series, so I'm not sure how moving Savard helps. Plus, you just got a front line winger in Horton. Wouldn't it make sense to put him on a line with Savard, who's never truly had a go to winger to pass too? It does to me. IMO, the center that is expendable, is Bergeron. I love his 2 way play, and his grit, but he's regressed since his concussions. He is only 24/25, so maybe he becomes the player we thought he'd be, but right now, if I had to move one of the Savard/Krejci/Bergeron centerman, it would be Patrice. He's replacable IMO.

Seguin, if he does become a 70-90 point scorer in this league, won't likely be so until his second, or third season. If he scores 30 points next year, I think we should be happy. The kid is 18 years old. The jump to the pros will be tough for him.

He's replaceable, sure, especially at his salary. However, out of the four centermen we've been discussing, Bergy is really the only one who can play a third-line role. Giving Seguin third-line center minutes isn't going to help much. They'd be better off putting him on the 2nd line wing or let him play center in Providence or Plymouth.

I don't want to trade any of them, but Krecji would definitely bring the most in trade value.

Bergeron seems like the most likey to be traded due to his impending UFA status at season's end. This way, it will make room for Seguin, Savard, and Krejci to center the top three lines... now that's depth down the middle.

My Leafs currently down the middle look like this: Bozak, Grabovski, Kadri. :S

You are right, the jump to the pros is night and day from junior hockey. Seguin, like the two first overall picks in the past two drafts, will struggle at times. Both Stamkos and Taveres didn't have similar impactful seasons like the Crosbys and Ovis of the world. One thing that might hurt Seguin is he didn't make team Canada for the World Juniors tournment. Normally highly touted prospects are shoe-ins... but this could be a sign that he really exploded in after the selection process.

Either way, I'm interested to see how he develops. I know here in Toronto, the trade for Kessel will be scrutinized to no end.

I'm heading to the game (leafs vs bruins) on Oct. 28... any advice for a Leafs fan?
