Well, it's the deadest part of the offseason before training camp. So I figured this would be a fun thread to start. List your top ten favorite games complete with the years in which they were played and explain why you rank them where you ranked them. The only catch here is that you cannot include the Super Bowl victories. I think we can all safely say that the Super Bowl victories are our favorite games so it only makes sense to exclude them and list the rest. However, you can include ANY regular season and/or playoff game from any year that you would like. Old timers can include games from the 70's. Newer Pats fans can include games from the last ten years.

10. 2003 - Divisional Playoffs vs. Tennessee Titans.
-Just a physical gut check of a game. Played on the coldest day of the year in New England, this one was pretty memorable. For me, it marked the beginning of our march toward a dynasty.

9. 1994 - Week 17 vs. Miami Dolphins.
-To my memory, this was the first Pats game I ever watched. I only have a few memories of it, but I do remember the Pats taking the Dolphins into overtime and Bledsoe icing it with a TD pass. This was the first of a couple of times in which Bledsoe torched the Dolphins for 300+ yards and 4 TD passes.

8. 2007 - Duel in Dallas, Week 6 @ Dallas Cowboys.
-This will be one of three games from the 2007 season to make my list. This game marked the first huge nationally televised test for that Pats team and marked the beginning of a time in which the entire world collectively stood back and said "whoa" at that team. In front of a nationally televised audience, the Pats marched into Dallas and slaughtered the team that would eventually go on to win the NFC and post one of the better records in football that year. Brady led the way with 5 TD's.

7. 1996 - AFC Championship vs. Jacksonville Jaguars.
-This marked the first time in which I finally got to see my favorite team advance to the Super Bowl. We beat the upstart Jags that year. Little did I know what would proceed to happen in the weeks following that glorious AFCCG victory...

6. 2007 - Week 13 @ Baltimore Ravens.
-The great escape. Against a hungry defense, the Pats have to gut check one taking the game to the final seconds before Brady delivers a beautiful pass into the back of the end zone to Gaffney. But all rights, this is a game which we should have lost. Even after that pass, Boller was able to complete a Hail Mary which almost went for a TD. Truly a game which came down to the final seconds.

5. 2006 - AFC Wild Card vs. New York Jets.
-After splitting with the Jets and having to hear constant sh!t from their fans about how the student was going to surpass the teacher, nothing felt better than blowing them out in the Wild Card round of the AFC Playoffs. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of that game.

4. 2002 - Week 17 vs. Miami Dolphins.
-After losing to the Dolphins earlier in the year in Miami, the Pats return in Week 17 to avenge it in an overtime thriller which saw them take out Miami and at least end an easily forgotten season on a good note with a 27-24 overtime victory against the Dolphins.

3. 2007 - Week 9 @ Indianapolis Colts.
-After the way the 2006 season ended, nothing felt better than going into Indy and getting a win over Manning and the Colts. This game was by no means, comfortable though. The Colts roared out to an early lead but couldn't escape the dagger of Brady and the Pats coming back for a big win. I remember I was watching this at a bar filled with Indy fans. I happened to be one of the few Pats fans that were there and the only one who sat outside to watch the game. All game long, I caught flak from them. But, as the old saying goes, he who laughs last laughs loudest.

2. 2004 - AFC Divisional Playoffs vs. Indianapolis Colts.
-There are really so many games which I could put into this slot. But this game deserves it. I was a senior in high school when this one was played. I remember honestly thinking that we weren't going to win this game during the week. With the injuries to our secondary, I didn't see how we could beat Manning and those receivers. On top of that, 2004 was a season in which the Colts set the world on fire offensively and they had just posted 50+ points against the Broncos the week before. Boy was I wrong. The Pats completely set the tone on both sides of the ball. On defense, they completely confused Manning and shut him down with a two deep zone and some excellent tackling on the shorter routes. Many times we saw the Manning face. On top of that, they were just far more physical than the Colts that day (remember Asante's lone huge headhunting hit?). On offense, they proceeded to shove the ball down the Colts throat with two drives which last over 8 minutes. On top of that, Brady played flawless football as the Pats showed the Colts just how far they needed to go. Complete domination ended in a 20-3 score. Afterward, I knew this team was going to the Super Bowl. We would be playing Pittsburgh and they had stunk up the joint. Great victory.

1. 2001 - The Snow Game, AFC Divisional Playoffs vs. Oakland Raiders.
-Honestly, what else was I going to put here? I've only been watching football since the mid-90's but I have a feeling that a lot of old timers will be putting this one up there as well. :) This was truly the beginning of a dynasty. A lot of people point this out to be the "Tuck Rule" game, but I don't even think about that when remembering this game. I remember Brady telling Mr. Kraft that they were going to get that one before game and smiled. Gut check time once again. A hard fought game enters overtime as Brady grows up in front of the eyes of the NFL viewing world. This also marked the first of many times that Brady set up the team for a game-winning field goal by Adam Vinatieri. The kick is good, and the Pats win the game 16-13 in OT. Next week, they marched into Pittsburgh and proceeded on a path toward a dynasty. What a great game. What a great season.

-----------------

Honorable mentions:
1999 - Comeback against the Dolphins. 2001 - AFC Championship game @ Steelers. 2002 - Week 1 and 2 vs. Steelers, @ Jets. 2003 - Week 9 @ Broncos, Week 13 @ Colts, Week 14 @ Dolphins. 2004 - Week 1 vs. Colts, AFCCG @ Steelers. 2005 - Week 15 vs. Bucs. 2006 - Week 12 vs. Bears, AFC Divisional @ Chargers. 2007 - Week 1 @ Jets, Week 2 @ Chargers, Week 14 vs. Steelers, Week 17 @ Giants. 2008 - Week 2 @ Jets, Week 12 @ Dolphins, Week 17 vs. Cardinals. 2009 - Week 6 vs. Tits, Week 11 vs. Jets.

Hopefully many more to come...

How could you not include the snow fireworks game against Miami in 2003 in the top 10? Other than the Snow Bowl game and the Super Bowl in New Orleans, the best game I ever attended.

The snow / tuck-rule game against Oakland was the ultimate game. All the bad luck that the Patriots have accumulated through decades of Ben Dryth and other horrible misfortunes...all that bad karma was reversed in a single game: The Glorious Snowbo
Too bad that good karma did not last until the Super Bowl against the Giants.

I listed it in my honorable mentions. But that's the premise of this thread. Come up with your own list and include it. :)

The only one that is really special to me was the Titans snow game from this past October. My older son and I went and it was one of those incredible father/son experiences I will never forget.

Re: Your top ten favorite games from any era of the Patriots (sans the Super Bowl win

Definitely the Patriots vs Oakland game of 2001. I don't feel like making a whole list because that would take too much thought and time. This was probably the earliest game I can remember that I saw. I am sure I've been in the room while I was younger as my mom watched a game (My mom is a football fan and my dad doesn't watch any sports, I know weird) but I didn't know what was going on. I just turned 19 years old yesterday and have always been a pats fan but never seriously got into watching them until about 2007 although I did watch them earlier.

Anyway this was probably the earliest game I can remember. I was at my Grandpa's house, who has been a longtime Patriots fan. We were all watching the game and I was about 10 at the time. I remember I watched the game in his TV room which is awesome and seems like a movie theater. We ended up going to bed before the game was over and my mom was *****ing saying how we are going to lose. We woke up the next morning and they had won! I thought that was awesome. The game was exciting and unique because of various circumstances like the snow.

I feel like football has become an obsession with me over the past year as well as being a Patriots fan. Football has become a huge part of my life and will always be a huge part. I will never turn my back on the Patriots, even if they become a bad team once again. This goes for the Red Sox and Celtics too.

Re: Your top ten favorite games from any era of the Patriots (sans the Super Bowl win

1985 AFC Championship - Everybody thought the Pats couldn't win. The Dolphins were supposedly the superior team and the Pats had won in Miami only one time before that IIRC.

Re: Your top ten favorite games from any era of the Patriots (sans the Super Bowl win

There are too many to pare down to 10 without a lot more thought and effort than i have in me tonight. I could easily come up with 30 that deserve consideration.

Re: Your top ten favorite games from any era of the Patriots (sans the Super Bowl win

So hard to narrow it down to 10, so I'll just list a few of mine in addition to your 10.

- The 3 playoff wins against PIT (1996, 2001, 2004): I went to high school and college in western PA and these 3 happened during that era. I was the only Patriot fan I knew right in the heart of Steeler Country so these will always be special. The 3 best Monday's of my life :D
- 1996 comeback win @ NYG
- 1994 comeback win vs. MIN
- 1998 wins over Miami and Buffalo with Bledsoe's broken finger
- Any win over PIT/Indy

Nah! It is far easier to criticize everyone else's list than come up with my own.

Re: Your top ten favorite games from any era of the Patriots (sans the Super Bowl win

Here's a pre-2000 list my ten favorite Pats games.

1961 versus Dallas Texans. Back then crowds didn't all stay in the stands, the stood on the field as well. On the last play of the game a pass intended for a Texan in the end zone was incomplete and the Pats won. Later replays show that a fan standing just beyond the back of the end zone jumped on the field and deflected the pass. Rumor has it that person was Billy Sullivan.

Pats beat the Bills 26-8 to advance to the 1963 AFL championship game. On a side note the game would never happen today; back then division ties were settled on the field with a playoff game, rather than with a list of statistical tiebreakers.

1969 opening game. Billy Sullivan cuts a player that refused to sign a new contract hours before kickoff. Bob Gladieux is in the stands, hears his name called over the PA, and ends up making the tackle on opening kickoff despite tailgating for several hours before the start of the game.

Week one of 1971. Coming off a horrible 2-10 season, in Jim Plunkett's first game the Patriots shock the Raiders, who were one of the best teams in the NFL at that time, 20-6. After four straight seasons in which the Pats' record was no better than 4-10, that win was a huge inspiration and gave Pats fans reason to believe things were turning around.

Week 3 of 1976. Pats travel to Three Rivers Stadium to face the defending SB champion Steelers, who were coming off a 15-2 season and in the middle of a streak of 8 straight playoffs, including four championships in six years. The Pats won 30-27 en route to a division title and 11-3 record. Unfortunately the season ended in the playoffs in the Ben Dreith game, and two years later another great Pats team was derailed when the same coach, Chuck Fairbanks, made the decision to leave the team prior to the end of the season. "No one can serve two masters" was Billy Sullivan's reasoning.

1982 Snowplow game. Pats 3, Dolphins 0. Don Shula nearly has a stroke. Mark Henderson becomes an honorary member of the Pats Hall of Fame. Highlight of Ron Meyer's coaching career.

1985 Week 16. Pats beat the Bengals to secure a playoff spot. Pats go for it on 4th down with two minutes to go, up by less than a touchdown (sound familiar?) Robert Weathers nearly gets tackled for a loss, finds a crease, and runs 42 for the game clinching touchdown.

1985 AFC Division Playoff Game. Pats beat the Raiders 27-20. After the Ben Dreith game and Jack Tatum paralyzing Darryl Stingley, this was sweet revenge. Trivia: the Raiders were in LA then, and this was the game that Howie Long and Matt Millen got into it with Pat Sullivan, with Sullivan ending up with a bloody face after Millen hit him with his helmet over his eye.

1985 AFCCG. Squish the Fish. Pats finally beat the Dolphins in Miami after 18 straight losses there. They were the first NFL team to go to the Super Bowl from a wildcard spot, winning three games on the road. The win also meant the Pats were going to the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history. Final score Pats 31, Dolphins 14.

1996 AFC Division Playoff Game. Even though the Pats were 11-5 and won the AFC East, there were still some doubts. The previous season they won only five games and started out 1-11, so the optimism was tempered a bit. Any lingering doubts were stifled after the Pats throttled the Steelers 28-3.

Re: Your top ten favorite games from any era of the Patriots (sans the Super Bowl win

The 01 AFC championship means a lot to me. I was 11, just getting into the Patriots that season watching that whole post season run was memorable. But I just remember all week hearing how there was no way in hell the Patriots would touch the Steelers, and I remember the whole game the fans of Pittsburgh just being shocked, and I watched my team advance to the super bowl for the first time.

Re: Your top ten favorite games from any era of the Patriots (sans the Super Bowl win

Week 17 2002 vs. Miami.

I was the biggest Pats fan in the world for a good 3 hours that day. :D

Re: Your top ten favorite games from any era of the Patriots (sans the Super Bowl win

too tired to do a real top 10, so i'll just list some of my favorites:

-04 AFCCG vs. Steelers
-03 vs Colts, goal line stand. Then the playoff game that same year. actually, every win we've had against the colts in the Brady/Belichick era is pretty much on an equal plane for me.
-03 shutout against dolphins in the snow, fans throwing snow in the air
-07 vs. steelers after the anthony smith guarantee
-tuck game
-intentional safety vs. broncos
-50th TD pass
-26/28 vs Jaguars in 07 playoffs
-31-0 vs Bills to end the 03 season
too many more to count. goodnight.

Re: Your top ten favorite games from any era of the Patriots (sans the Super Bowl win

the 1986 Pats vs Dolphins in the Orange bowl, where the Pats win they are in the playoffs, and lose they are out.. Eason gets hurt as usual, And Steve Grogan saved the day, last min td to Stanley Morgan was a classic.. Probably my fav non Brady era Pats Game..

The other Non Brady game would have to be 1996 last game, the pats were in the playoffs, but if they win that game, they get a bye.. The Giants were clubbing them 21-3 , the pats roared back, Troy Brown made a heck of a catch on his back, on a third and long.. Then Bledsoe to coates for the game winner...

My 2 fav Brady era games- The snow bowl vs Raiders and the Record 16-0 game against the Giants

YouTube - 07 AFC Championship Intro

Even though it was a loss, the level of play in this game was crazy, it was the game when american football became my number 1 sport, a loss that hurts me more than the 18-1 game against the giants.

I remember my stream cut out at half time, and by the time it came back the game was tied

Aargh, you stole mine! What I loved about that game was 1) they finally got a running game going in that game after not being able to run all season, which set up the pass to Morgan perfectly, and 2) they kept showing Boomer and some Bengals who needed the Pats to lose so they could get in the playoffs, and they had been acting so smug all game, and they just looked SO sad after the Pats scored to win it.

Peytie sporting tufts of sod, what's not to love:singing: One of my favorite Colt memories was the play he messed up; he was intending to be the WR I think, I forget but they'd practiced it all week and Manning screwed it up. Best ever.

Otherwise all those above plus Freddie Mitchell. I know this isn't supposed to include SB but when you mentioned A.Smith I couldn't help but think of FredEx:D

Fans throwing snow in the air is a classic, one of the absolute best moments in Pats history!

Instead of making the offseason go faster, threads like this just make me even MORE impatient for the 2010 kickoff! :rocker:
