Re: Jamaal Brown reportedly being traded to the Redskins

Follow up #2 says it's a matter of Brown working out a contract with the Redskins and then signing the tender:

Per the source, the Redskins currently are negotiating a long-term extension for Brown. If/when they work it out, he'll sign the tender, get traded, and sign the extension.

Jammal Brown deal done, if he signs the tender | ProFootballTalk.com

This is interesting to follow, because the Mankins situation could end up unfolding in much the same way.

Re: Jamaal Brown reportedly being traded to the Redskins

More follow up. Apparently, he's willing to go to Washington even before working out the extension:

er multiple media reports, left tackle Jammal Brown is in Washington, taking a physical. We're told that, if he passes, Brown will sign his tender offer and then he will be traded to the Redskins.

But while efforts have begun to sign him to an extension, we're told that no extension will be finalized in the short term -- and that Brown has no complaints in that regard.

No extension yet for Jammal Brown | ProFootballTalk.com

Replacement?

Mankins is a Guard.

Brown is a Tackle.

Yes, but some people have been putting forth the notion of shifting Light to guard. If you shift him to guard, you need another tackle (which is something I think people have overlooked, but such is life).....

More people are talking about moving Kaczur, not Light, to guard.

....and some are talking about moving Light. Any way you slice it, the player brought in would be replacing Mankins on the roster (or future "roster", as it were, since he doesn't currently count against the roster).

Wow he went for a conditional 4th with a pick going back to Washington (a 6th or 7th.) The Pats could have, and should have, beaten that, Brown is a great player.

That was definitely fire sale pricing.

Holds more than Flozell Adams.

I dont define either player as "great".

^That is very harsh, Brown is a very good LT, he may not be elite but for a 3 rd rounder that is great value.

I think it goes to prove some of these internet football sites wrong that go on and on about how important the LT is. A QB like Brees, Brady can get by with just a good LT (Bushrod, Light), and make them look better than they are.

Does anyone really think that Matt Light is/was an All Pro player?

The franchise QB's have that 6th sense to step up in the pocket, it's the pressure up the middle that screws them.

There's two names I enjoy seeing on the opposition roster. Flozell Adams and Richie Ingocnito. Normally because during the course of a game you'll hear holding or personal foul at least twice!

We have five starting positions and five players. We don't need any replacements.
OPTION 1: LT Light, LG Kaczur, RT Vollmer
OPTION 2: LT Vollmer, LG Light, RT Kaczur
In both case, Neal is our RG and Koppen our center.

if the pats let mankins walk by revoking the tender, do they get a 3rd round compensatory? That's about all NO is getting for this guy.

Yes, Matt Light was a Pro Bowl player.

Imagine how cheap we could get a guard, and have 35 million to spend elsewhere.

All you have to do is find a team with a top level guard who missed all/most of last season, found a replacement for him that did a better than adequate job, and has him as an unsigned restricted free agent.

Should be easy. Do me a favor and get back to me with a few teams that fit the bill.

As far as I can tell, Shawn Andrews is still available. I should confess, though, that I really don't know what type of guard he is or how mobile he is (his ability to get upfield in a hurry would be a big issue). He and Kendall Simmons were the only names I was semi-familiar with on NFL.com's restricted free agent linemen list, and Simmons was released by Buffalo who had one of the worst starting O-Lines in the league last year, if that means anything.

He skipped out on the Eagles in June of 2008, and supposedly was battling depression. Then, he missed all but 2 games in 2008 with a back injury. Post-surgery, he also missed all of 2009.

Depression.... 2 lost years.... 2 back surgeries. I'm sure he'd come cheap.
