Actually, the Americans channelled their inner Buffalo Bills and Slovenia channelled their inner Houston Oilers, because the USA came back to tie the game.

The US also made World Cup history. For the first time ever, a player had a ball smack full force right off his face (ouch!) and received a yellow card for a hand ball.

And the U.S. also got completely robbed on what should have been a 3rd goal to win the game.

That would mean that both Slovenia and England on 4pts, USA on 2pts and Algeria with a big duck egg, 0.
You would then be relying on England to beat Slovenia, and the USA to beat an already eliminated Algeria. That would give you 2nd place in the group. Simples!

If England beats Algeria, then the U.S. only needs to beat algeria by 2 goals and they are Guaranteed to move on....Because the loser of the england/slovenia game would be eliminated and if they tie we would move on with goal differential....

It's now a lot clearer after England's 0-0 game with the Algerians.
The USA win on Wednesday v Algeria and they go through.
The caveat is that Algeria aren't mathematically out of it yet and will have a go at the Americans.
Edge of the seat stuff for Sam's Army next Wednesday.

To be honest, despite a draw being in the best interest for England, i was rooting for a US win. The way they fought back and 2 nill down was incredible, and the disallowed goal was a joke. If anything it was a foul against Slovenia.

Oh well, at least your nation didn't embarrass itself by drawing against Algeria. How on earth can the creaters of the world's greatest game draw against Algeria? I give up on football, all it does is raise my expectations and fill me with hope of repeating '66 and then bring me back down to earth in a sea of self pity and depression. Think im going to start following curling instead, at least we are half decent at that, im sure we'd at least score against Algeria.

A win by the USA and they advance. A tie by both the USA and England where both of them score the same number of goals in their matches and the US advances(total goals scored scenario). A tie by USA and England and England scores two more goals than the USA and the USA gets the pick of the drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee USA advances(pure chance tie breaker).

Now now... don't get your panties in a bunch just because I know everything I am talking about and I am 100% correct when I say Americans hate soccer except once every 4 years during the World Cup - kinda like the Olympics. Once July 11 has come and gone, soccer will go back to its position where the highest rated soccer game gets about 1/6th as many viewers as the Scripps Spelling Bee.

Hopefully this "great sport" doesn't decide to assign a referee with all the competence of Groucho Marx for USA's next game.

I said Americans don't like soccer and I explained why, but I also clearly indicated in multiple posts that the World Cup is, like the Olympics, that 1 time every 4 years where Americans follow a sport that we don't give a rat's ass about the other 3 years, 11 months. And yes I know soccer is also an Olympic sport, but the coverage of soccer during the Olympics pales in comparison to the prestige of the World Cup.

Soccer is like curling or the ski jump or the decathalon. We just don't give a crap except once every 4 years.

Now that's simply not true. You are using the MLS championship game for that, whereas i bet the viewing figures for the Champions League final were considerably higher.

You should give it a try, you might enjoy it and it will give you another sport to fill your time with. The World Cup is an amazing spectacle, seeing so many different sporting cultures all descend on one place is fantastic. Although that has slightly been worse this year due to the South African vuvuzelas blocking out chanting and singing from fans of the countries playing. I didn't give a damn about American football, then i gave it a try and fell in love with the sport. During the season it comes close to my love of football (soccer), but not quite.

But I personally find it highly, highly doubtful that any European League soccer match drew a significantly higher rating than anything the MLS did. The fact that you think it does shows you really don't understand the American mindset.

Oh, I have been watching some of the World Cup. I saw both of America's games and some assorted action from other contests. And there has been absolutely nothing that made me want to tune in to the next game between the Revolution and DC United.

I watch soccer once every 4 years. Of course, I also watch synchronized diving, curling and greco-roman wrestling once every 4 years too. That doesn't mean I am going to follow either of those sports during the rest of my time.

Performance from 2 games =|= overall world standing. Yes are having a terrible world cup. Last night was the worst i have ever seen England play, no ability on the ball, no creativity. Simple errors and awful work ethic. However, that still doesn't change the fact that England is one of the biggest nation in the football word. To the bit in bold, you already proved earlier that European football is at least as popular as American soccer.
