Ty Warren missing practices to work on his degree

How does everyone feel about this? Personally I think it is bad idea on his part; he lost a chunk of change and all those workouts. I am sure he said that he was working on on his own but it is not the same. I am not expecting a good year from him. He can get his degree when he retires for goodness sake; what was he thinking?

I'm sure everyone would've rather had him be there, but I at least respect what he's doing. He always mentions how important it is for his kids to see him doing this. And unlike some people that are trying to run him out of town, I still think that Warren is one of the best possible players in the NFL for that defensive end position, when healthy, and as long as he continues to excel, I won't complain.

As long as he is in shape and knows what they are working on during OTAs and possible/probable changes that are being done he should be OK with missing the practices.

It would not be right for anyone to knock him for missing the practices while getting his degree

Bingo. He has money, the workout bonus is much less relevant than the point he's making. Early in his career, he took an extension that gave him less money overall but with less risk overall.

He's consistent in his approach and his ethics and values. How can anyone take issue?

Man was a first round draft pick. I'm sure he knows how to keep in shape. He certainly knows the system and the playbook after all these years.

Actually, I think that the message is pretty much the reverse. TW earns a lot of money -- not Seymour money, but a lot. What's more a degree from Texas A&M isn't going to make much difference to his employability. What he wants to show by his example is that that isn't what matters. He had a commitment to his education and he wants to complete it. It's about honouring your commitments and being humble, not about financial needs.

I really admire Ty Warren. When he arrived in New England he didn't seem like the sharpest knife in the drawer. Perhaps that was unfair, but clearly he's an athlete not a scholar, so I don't think the academic work will come easily to him.

But he's obviously someone with an incredibly strong sense of values. His personal background was very tough (single-parent home, very little money) and he's come out from it with a huge determination to do the right thing for those around him. He was on Patriots All-Access with his family a couple of years ago visiting the ice sculptures on Boston Common. His little girls were the cutest thing you ever saw and he was clearly besotted with them.

I'd love to meet him and shake his hand.

While at times we consider these sports life and death, they really aren't.

Ultimately, its work. And family is more important than work. Warren is making the right move and setting a good precedent for his children re: the importance of education. Not to mention the fact that Warren has to think about his life after football, and a degree will make that transition out of the NFL easier.

If the Patriots organization is fine with it then all the more power to him. Warren is setting the platform to transition life after football. There's a massive void that some players can't recover from when the grid iron is there no more.

He's professional enough to know what's up.

Old news, but good news in my opinion. He's a shining example of integrity and professionalism. He skipped OTAs and gave up $250,000 to work on his degree and set an example to his kids. Tom Brady skipped some OTAs to also spend time with his wife and children and got heat for it.
I tell you what, when they start getting arrested for sexual assualt or for fighting in a strip club, then I'll get mad, but being dedicated to their families and their values only makes me more proud to cheer them on.

For the money they make and the relatively short time they have to make it, I will go on the other side of this discussion and say he should be in camp. The degree will always be there for him to finish. Heck....he will be in his early 30's....hardly a bad situation.

Life after football, please.......he could take off a year with the cash he will have in the bank and finish school at his leisure. How many on this board will be bringing up his failure to be here if he ends up getting hurt early in the season?

Really......the life after football horse has left the barn......earn now and do your job.....school later.

It is easy to say that he is doing the right thing working toward his degree and all that mom & apple pie blather but I think it is rubbish. Peeing away 250K shows that he is not careful with his money and the degree could have come after he retired. And does he really think that a degree will effect his employment options after he retires? No unless he is pre-med or some such thing.

This was a bad move on his part but we will have to see how he performs on the field to see how bad it was. A cynical person might say that this action could be construed a desire to hang out at school where he is a Big Man on Campus instead of hanging out in dreary New England.

I predict he will have a sucky year or get injured.

Give me a break man. If anyone here throws him under the bus for missing this ****, and uses it as an excuse for him being injured should probably go out and consider going back to school.

This guy is a former 1st Rd. pick, a player that actually plays to his potential, has not once ever given us a reason to question his passion and dedication to this team, and some of you really think that missing Camps and OTA's is going to lead to him having a poor season, or better yet, an injury?

I have to wonder if the Patriots are little worried also. Did they really bring in two FAs DL guys and draft too DL'er just because they were worried about Brace? And Brace was supposed to have had a great offseason. There is something going on; either Brace is still a blob or Warren aggrevated them or both.
