It looks like Harvey Unga will enter the supplemental draft in July. He finished his collegiate career with 3,455 rush yds, 4.9 yds per.

BYU's the team's all-time leading rusher was not allowed re-admission back to the school due to allegations of premarital sex. What a terrible person:rolleyes:

I like this kid. He's big at 6-0 237, he can run inside and has deceptive speed to the outside. He can also catch the ball well and has some moves in the open field. Would the Pats spend a 4th, 5th or 6th on him in July?

His GF is pretty cute. She's not allowed back to the university for a while either. Then again, I guess as a private university, BYU is allowed to have whatever archaic and puritanical rules they'd like - as absurd as they may seem given that we are in the 21st century.

I don't really know anything about this guy as a football player, so I'll leave it up to others.

Hmm, I wonder how possible it is that the Pats actually would try for him.

He seems like a decent player, but I don't see him being able to beat out any of our top 5 RBs, especially when coming into camp a couple months late. Because of that, it seems like it would be throwing a pick away. He's currently thought to be a 4th-7th round pick next year. So a team would probably have to give a 6th or 7th rounder to get him. I've liked those picks lately (Pryor, Edelman, Deaderick, Weston, ZRobinson), so I'd pass on Unga.

Too bad he can't just transfer to another university and be given an opportunity to build up his stock for the 2011 draft. I don't feel bad for him getting kicked out of school. He knew the rules when he decided to go there.

On a side note, his girlfriend is very attractive.

Every time I read this type of article I keep thinking about Jim McMahon who also went to BYU...You want me to believe that he spent 4 years there and never...................

Will admit never seen him play live, but on his highlight vid one thing is screaming out at me

Good college player.

He looks like FB to me, could play some ST's i bet, not bad for like 5th round pick. And we really don't have a FB on the team, so who knows?

I say no. He already has character issues.

I like him, shades of Pierre Thomas, lets grab him if possible.

I'm no scout, but to my eye he seems to lack an NFL RB physique and he runs too upright.

On the other hand, his girlfriend is hot.

If I understand this thread, the patriots should give up a higher pick than any of the other 19 teams interested in Unga for a player that was prjected to be 4th-7th rounder in a shallow 2011 draft, after he had one more year of college experience. And the expectation is that with the lack of the year's experience and the lack of rookie camps and working with the team, Unger would make this future later rounder a candidate to be a contributer to the 2010 patriots. This makes no sense to me at all.

If he were in the 2010 draft, we probably wouldn't have drafted him. We passed on better prospects. And even if we did draft him, he might be cut by now (we just cut someone that many thought would make the roster), might make the Practice Squad, and be a long shot for the roster since we may carry only four RB's and it is unlikely that such a player would pass by even Green-Ellis in the depth chart.

Finally, if we were to outbid 19 teams for this budding superstar, it would be unlikely that we could place him on the Practice Squad. After all, we already know that 19 other team have at least some interest.

BOTTOM LINE
We should keep whatever 2011 draft pick we might have used on Unger and use it to trade for a player who might make the 2010 roster, or simply use the pick in 2011.

I think you are undervaluing the opportunity cost of getting another RB into the system a year early. The Pats RBs are very average at best. If they feel Unga can contribute and compete for a roster spot they should go ahead and spend the pick. He'll get a full year of the system under his belt and can contribute this year. Setting him up for an even better sophmore year in 2011.

You just pointed out yourself that 2011 will be a shallow draft. If the Pats get Unga for midround pick and he works out, that means they won't have to use an early pick to secure a good RB in 2011. Shallow means scarcity of commodity. Mid and late round picks will be DEVALUED in 2011. Most of the quality will be snapped up early because other teams are aware of this as well.

Would I love to get Ingram? Of course. But do you see the Pats spending a top 10 pick on a RB? And what is a better value, to get a RB in the mid to late rounds that works out or to spend a 1st round pick on one?

I'm not saying that I think Unga is THE GUY. I haven't seen or heard enough on him to make that judgment. But if the Pats like what they see at his workout, the advantage of getting him a year early and in the system far outweighs any value that mid to late round pick would have in the shallow 2011 draft.

Very well thought out, excellent pts.

I would note that Unga is not the only running back in the Supplemental Draft on July 15. There us Emokpae (a fullback who has 25 teams interested) and Castille,

I agree 100% when you said, "If they feel Unga can contribute and compete for a roster spot they should go ahead and spend the pick." But I haven't seen or heard anything that would make me think that's the case here. There's nothing about Unga that jumps out and makes you think he'll be an above average player in the NFL. I can't say that he seems to be a better RB than BenJarvus, our 5th best RB. Back to what you said, the Pats should take him if they really feel Unga has a good shot at earning a spot on the roster. But on the other hand, if they can't say he has a good shot at making the team, there's no reason to waste a draft pick on him. There's plenty of guys who bring similar skills to the table who will be available in the late rounds next year. And with everyone's contracts expiring, there will be plenty of room on the roster to add a late round rookie RB in 2011.
