I originally put this in this secret, unknown section of Pats Fans but after reading the 'Surprising Fact' threads I figured I'd re-post them here in the main forum. (Mods, feel free to merge if you think it belongs in one of those threads instead.)



2010 Patriot Team Franchise Milestones


PASSING

Tom Brady holds nearly every Patriot passing record, but there is one more that can be added to the list this year. Brady (4218) is exactly 300 pass attempts behind Drew Bledsoe's career record. That's less than 20 attempts per game, so Brady should be able to easily pass Bledsoe for that mark.


RUSHING Attempts

Kevin Faulk ranks 6th with 839 rushing attempts. He needs 52 to catch John Stephens (5th, 891) and 119 to catch Curtis Martin (4th, 958). Sam Cunningham tops the list with 1385.

Laurence Maroney is 14th with 582. About 9 attempts per game will move him in to the top ten, ahead of Craig James (585), Mosi Tatupu (612), Leonard Russell (689), and Antowain Smith (721). If Maroney gets about 15 carries a game he could also pass Corey Dillon (753), Larry Garron (759), and Don Calhoun (820), which would put him in 7th place all time.

Sammy Morris is 22nd with 314 carries. About 8 carries a game would move him past Horace Ivory (329), Mack Herron (353), Bob Perryman (369), Ron Burton (429) and Steve Grogan (445) for 17th place. Morris would need about 11 carries per game to catch #16 Andy Johnson (491) and 14 per game to catch #15 Carl Garrett (537).


RUSHING Yards

Faulk is 5th with 3505 yards, just 294 behind Curtis Martin, but he won't be able to catch Tony Collins (4647) for third place this year. Cunningham is the all time leader in this category as well with 5453 yards.

Maroney starts the year in 13th place with 2430 yards. An 820 yard season would move him up to 7th, past Russell (2437), James (2469), Smith (2781), Garron (2981), Dillon (3180), and Stephens (3249). Maroney needs 961 yards to match Calhoun's 6th place total of 3391 yards rushing.

Morris is 19th with 1430 yards, and should be able to pass Ron Burton (1536) early in the season. He's 587 behind Andy Johnson, 746 behind Steve Grogan, and 805 behind #15 Carl Garrett's 2235 yards.


RUSHING Touchdowns

Maroney ranks 8th with 21, slightly less than half of Jim Nance's club record of 45 rushing touchdowns. That's just two less than Don Calhoun's total, but eleven behind Curtis Martin and Tony Collins, who are tied for 5th with 32.

Kevin Faulk is 12th with 16, just one behind John Stephens and two behind Mosi Tatupu.

Morris is 19th with 12 rushing touchdowns but can jump up to 13th with three TD or 12th with four, passing Leonard Russell and Andy Johnson (13 each), Larry Garron, Horace Ivory, and Babe Parilli (14 each) and Carl Garrett (15).


RECEIVING Receptions

Kevin Faulk ranks 4th with 418 receptions. It's doubtful he would move up from that rank this year as he would need to catch 72 passes to match Ben Coates' total of 490. Troy Brown is the franchise leader with 557.

Wes Welker ranks 6th with 346 receptions, just 17 behind Irving Fryar; he could pass Coates before Faulk does if his rehab goes well.

Randy Moss has 250 receptions, 11th on the Pats all time list. An 80 catch season would put him ahead of Terry Glenn (329), as well as Gino Cappelletti (292), Jim Colclough (283), and Tony Collins (261).


RECEIVING Yards

Randy Moss (3765 yards), Wes Welker (3688) and Kevin Faulk (3605) rank 8-9-10 in Pats history, but you would need to combine all three of their totals together to surpass club leader Stanley Morgan's total of 10,352 yards.

Moss and Welker could pass Cappelletti (#7, 4589) and Glenn (#6, 4669) with 1000-yard seasons; with a 1236 yard season Moss would move up to the #5 spot (Colclough, 5001).


RECEIVING Touchdowns

Randy Moss begins the season with 47 receiving touchdowns, which is third in Pats history. He needs three more to match Ben Coates total of 50, and a 20-TD season to equal Stanley Morgan's franchise record of 67.


KICKING

Stephen Gostkowski has 121 field goal attempts, 5th in team history and just four fewer than Tony Franklin's total; Gino Cappelletti's club record of is safe for a long time unless the Pats re-sign Adam Vinatieri.

Gostkowski ranks 4th in field goals made with 103, he needs 25 more to move into third place with John Smith.


SCORING

Randy Moss ranks 4th with 47 total touchdowns. That's 2 behind Sam Cunningham's 49, three behind Ben Coates' 50, and 21 behind Stanley Morgan's 68 (Morgan had one punt return for a TD.)

Moss is 4th in points scored with 284. Ahead of him are Cunningham (294), Coates (302) and Morgan (408).

TEAM

With 13 regular season wins the Pats would have 400 wins in their franchise history. They would be the 17th team to reach that mark - or 16th if they win 13 games before Denver wins six more. They would also be only the 2nd (or 3rd) old AFL team to reach that mark; Oakland has 410 wins.

The Patriots enter the season with a .518 all time winning percentage, 14th best in NFL history. Depending on how they do they could possibly pass the Ravens (.520), Jaguars (.521), and maybe even the Broncos (.528).

The Patriots are one of four teams with three championships. One more would place them 9th in NFL history, and they would be the first old AFL team with four. That would also make them just the 4th team to win four Super Bowls. Another conference championship would give them 7 in the Super Bowl era; only Dallas, with 8, has more.


BILL BELICHICK

Belichick enters the year 56 games over .500 in regular season games in his coaching career, which is 14th best all time and number one among active coaches. An 11-5 record would put him 10th place alongside Vince Lombardi and Bud Grant, passing Bill Cowher and Joe Gibbs along the way.

Another year in the playoffs would be the 9th in Belichick's career, good for 14th place all time. It's doubtful he'll match Don Shula's record of 19 playoff appearances, but he could easily finish his career in 4th or 5th place with four or five more playoff teams.

Belichick ranks 8th with 20 playoff games, one behind Bill Cowher and two in back of Bud Grant. With four more playoff games he would move into third place along with Gibbs, Mike Holmgren, and Chuck Noll.

BB is fifth all time with 15 playoff wins, just five behind the NFL record of 20 held by Tom Landry. His next playoff win would move him into 4th with Noll, two more into 3rd with Gibbs, and four more into 2nd with Shula. Wouldn't it be fun to beat the Steelers in the playoffs to match or break Noll's mark? If the Pats win the Super Bowl it would give Belichick four, equalling the NFL record number that Noll won. That would put him 5th all time in number of league championships behind names like Paul Brown, George Halas and Curly Lambeau.


TOM BRADY

Passes Completed: Brady ranks 23rd with 2,672, and could become the 13th player with 3,000 - though Donovan McNabb (2801) and Drew Brees (2697) might get there before he does.

Passing Yards: Brady is 31st with 30,844 yards right now. He could move up to 15th (Jim Kelly, 35,467) with a season comparable to last year.

Passing Touchdowns: With 225 Brady currently ranks 21st in NFL history on this list. He needs to throw 36 touchdowns to move into the top ten. Expect the focus on passing touchdowns to be on two other players this year though: Brett Favre needs to throw just three to be the first to reach 500, and Peyton Manning needs to throw 34 to be the third player to throw for 400.

FRED TAYLOR

Rushing Yards: Taylor needs to simply stay healthy, and he will become the 15th player to rush for 12,000 yards; he is just 460 yards shy of that mark, currently ranking 15th all time with 11,540 yards. If he rushes for about 50 yards per game he could jump up to 9th all time, eclipsing the great Jim Brown's old long standing NFL record of 12,312 yards - and also passing Thurman Thomas, Franco Harris, Marcus Allen, Edgerrin James, and Marshall Faulk in the record books in the process.

Rushing Touchdowns: Fred needs to rush for four touchdowns to become the 28th player in NFL history to run for 70 touchdowns. He is currently 31st all time and 4th among active players with 66.

Touchdowns: Taylor needs six touchdowns of any type to reach a career total of 80, which would put him in the top 50 of all time.

All Purpose Yards: Taylor ranks 39th with 13,918; he needs just 82 yards to be the 37th player to reach the 14,000 yard mark. A 722-yard season would move him up to 32nd place, past Franco Harris, OJ Simpson and others.


RANDY MOSS

Receptions: Moss ranks 10th with 926, so with 74 catches he will become the 8th player to reach that mark (I'm assuming Tony Gonzalez, with 999, will get to 1000 first.) If Terrell Owens' playing days are over, Gonzalez and Moss should rank 5-6 all time by the end of 2011.

Receiving Yards: Randy is currently 6th all time with 14,465 yards, so he should hit the 15,000 yard milestone mid season. Depending on how much or whether or not Owens (14,951 yards) plays this year and whether or not Isaac Bruce (15,208 yards) stays retired, Moss could move up to #2 all time in these rankings; Bruce currently ranks second and Owens is third.

Receiving Touchdowns: Moss (148) is currently four ahead of Owens (144), but nowhere close to Jerry Rice's all time record of 197 touchdown receptions; it would probably take about four more good seasons to break that record.

Touchdowns: Moss ranks 4th with 149, four behind LaDainian Tomlinson and two ahead of Owens. Once he passes LdT, Emmitt Smith is next on this ranking, but he won't pass him until 2011 at the earliest; Smith has 175 touchdowns. Jerry Rice's 208 touchdown record is most likely unreachable.


TORRY HOLT

Receptions: Holt is 11th with 920, and could pass #9 Art Monk (940) and #8 Andre Reed (951).

Receiving Yards: Holt is 10th with 13,382. He needs 395 yards to equal Henry Ellard for 9th place at 13,777; 517 yards to equal Cris Carter for 8th at 13,899; and 622 to match James Lofton' 14,004 yards for 7th place all time.

Receiving Touchdowns: Holt is 27th with 74. Three touchdown catches would equal Joey Galloway's career total of 77 for 23rd all time; six more and he is 20th with 80 touchdown catches.


WES WELKER

Season Receptions Leader

If Welker leads the NFL in receptions again, he will become only the sixth player to accomplish that in the history of the NFL three times. Perhaps one of the most amazing yet also overlooked sports record is Don Hutson's leading the league in receptions eight times, including five consecutive years, when you stop and consider how few players ever led the league in this category more than once.


Career Receptions

Welker is currently 145th all-time with 442 receptions. A 58-catch season would make him one of 113 players with 500 (I'm assuming Antonio Gates, who has 479, will get there first.) Another fifteen catches beyond that would move him into the top 100 all-time.


100-Reception Seasons

Wes needs one more 100-reception season to become just the third player in NFL history with four 100-reception seasons; the other two are Jerry Rice and Marvin Harrison, with four each. If Welker does that this year he would be only the second player, along with Harrison, to do that in four straight seasons; Brandon Marshall also has an opportunity to accomplish that feat this year.


Receiving Yards

Welker enters the season with 4,809 yards receiving in his career. With just 191 yards he will become the 229th player to reach the 5000 yard mark. If he goes for 1,191 yards this Welker would hit 6,000 yards in his career, a number that has been reached by only 156 NFL players previously.


Punt Returns

I doubt Welker will be returning punts this year, but if he does he can move up on the all-time NFL leader board in this category. Wes currently ranks 33rd all-time with 203 punt returns; he needs nine more to move into a tie with Deion Sanders for 30th most ever, and 49 more to move into tie with Troy Brown for 19th place.


Punt Return Yards

Welker is currently 28th all-time with 2,056 yards. He needs another 445 yards in punt returns to move up into the top twenty all-time in this category.

Thanks, glad to hear you enjoyed it. NFL football is the ultimate team sports, and Belichick's 2001 team that decided to not be introduced individually had the ultimate 'team first' mentality, but we as fans can still look at individual milestones even if the coach and players don't. Besides, as you mentioned it's the slowest part of the off season and is preferential to another thread speculating on an alleged disconnect between the quarterback and the owner.
