Analyst eyes Vollmer as breakout candidate

Re: Analysts Eyes Vollmer as Breakout Candidate

Vollmer brings new meaning to an old term .... manimal ... Vollmer is a beast.

I like the rotation Belichick used last year ... perhaps a bit less of Kaczur this year though.

Re: Analysts Eyes Vollmer as Breakout Candidate

Because Kaczur is the weak link and Matt Light is obviously better, Vollmer will play mostly RT.

Re: Analysts Eyes Vollmer as Breakout Candidate

I'll be curious to see how the offensive line shakes out, whether there is a 6 (or even 7) man rotation, or if Vollmer takes somebody's place. If Vollmer does become a starter, is it at LT? Does that mean Light moves to RT or guard? If Vollmer or Light start at RT does Kaczur become a backup or replace Neal?

Having one extra starter rather than one too few starters is not exactly the worst problem to have.

Re: Analysts Eyes Vollmer as Breakout Candidate

When was the last time we had a rotation on the offensive line? Other than garbage time or injuries, I don't think that dante believes in substituting much.

The first question is whether Mankins is on the team for Game One. Given that he is playhing, then I believe that Light is our LT, Vollmer is our RT, and Kaczur is our backup at both positions.

It is just possible that either Mankins or Light will be traded. I certainly hope that this does not happen.

If there's one thing I've learned from watching Belichick-coached Patriot teams, it's that I shouldn't assume they won't do something simply because they haven't done it before. I could fill an entire page with all the examples.

Vollmer, Light and Kaczur all got plenty of snaps last year. It may not have been a rotation last year, but Vollmer's playing time was not simply limited to filling in for an injured player either.

Re: Analysts Eyes Vollmer as Breakout Candidate

Kirwan's the man, but Vollmer already broke out as far as I'm concerned.

The mystery of Kaczur still baffles me, however. Watching him "battle" the second best Colts rusher Mathis, was agonizing.

Missed it. Too busy watching Vollmer stone Freeney.

Get the tapes. Looks like he's trying to play pattycakes, but Mathis doesn't want to play, he just wants to run around him and get the QB.

I've been sold on Vollmer since his stupid little workout tape preseason. He's the Fred Astaire of Olinemen as far as i'm concerned. I mean graceful.

Re: Analysts Eyes Vollmer as Breakout Candidate

I've seen some posts on this board and probably heard on the radio a few times the claim that Matt Light is incapable of playing RT. I was just wondering if anybody could shed some light on this? To me the ideal lineup has Vollmer lining up at LT and Light lining up at RT.

It has been brought up to Bill in press conferences before and he stated basically that not all tackles are able to "swing" and that Light was one of them. He essentially said that Light could only play left tackle.

What he said.

Kazcur was owned by Mathis. Big Time.

This!
After watching him manhandle Dwight Freeny, I was convinced.

"Did we think he could play right tackle? Yeah. But I think he’s a better left tackle than he is a right tackle. I’m not saying he can’t do it, he just better on the other side. Nick, on the other hand, came in as a left tackle in college, all the way, the first thing we do is move him over to right tackle, and he’s done well there.

"Last year, we got into a bind, and previous years when we’ve been in a bind, we move Nick back to left tackle. He truly has played both. But, again, until something like that happens, you don’t really know. Can Matt play right tackle? I’m sure he could. But he’s done a lot better at left tackle."

Re: Analysts Eyes Vollmer as Breakout Candidate

Vollmer at RT and kaczur the odd man out... I can't imagine a more likely scenario for 2010.

Re: Analysts Eyes Vollmer as Breakout Candidate

Who has more value as a trade player right now? Kaczur or Light?

I think it's possible that Vollmer spends a year at RT, with Kaczur being an excellent back up as a legit swing tackle, but I wouldn't be faintly shocked if Light was traded for a defensive player.

One thing is pretty clear: barring injury, Vollmer will start this year.

Of course Light would have more trade value but we don't need to trade him yet. He might be better off at right tackle. Think he would do a better job than Kaczur.

Light isnt a RT and never will be. BB has said this many times. Vollmer is good enough to play both so he will play RT this season is my guess

Re: Analysts Eyes Vollmer as Breakout Candidate

Either way Vollmer will get a starting spot because he simply makes the OL better when he's on the field. In the end that is what's important. Whether Light or Kaczur gets ousted, I don't know. But Vollmer is the best OT that we have and he needs to start.
