They didn't. They're not called the Buffalo Buffaloes, they're the Buffalo Bills. Which, when you think about it, makes no sense at all. I'll bet anything that the real Buffalo Bill never set foot in upstate New York. He was born in Iowa and died in Colorado, and earned his nickname by killing thousands of buffalo on the plains of the Midwest. .......

I remember reading somewhere many years ago when I lived in upstate New York that the team was named after a barbershop quartet......

You are right. The current Bills and named after this old team that eventually merged with Cleveland. Cleveland used to be called the Rams too.

------------------

The Buffalo Bills was an American Football team, based in Buffalo, NY, that played in the All-America Football Conference from 1946 to 1949. During its first season in 1946, the team was known as the Buffalo Bisons. Unlike the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, and Baltimore Colts, the franchise was not one of the three AAFC teams that merged with the National Football League prior to the 1950 season.

The team is named after a popular barbershop quartet [1], whose name was a play on the name of the famed Wild West showman Buffalo Bill Cody. The franchise is not officially related, other than in name, to the current NFL franchise, the Buffalo Bills, that began play in 1960 in the American Football League.

There was some controversy over Buffalo's exclusion from the enlarged NFL. Buffalo had experienced more success on the field and at the gate than Baltimore, and the original three-team plan would have left the league with 13 teams, not only a prime number, but also one considered to be bad luck. The move had left Buffalo as the only AAFC market without an NFL team post-merger, and one that had outdrawn the NFL average in fan attendance. With that in mind, Buffalo fans produced more than 15,000 season ticket pledges, raised $175,000 in a stock offering,[1] and filed a separate application to join. When the vote to admit Buffalo was held on January 20, 1950, a majority of league owners were willing to accept Buffalo; however, George Halas, who had a longstanding animosity toward Buffalo's previous NFL franchise, and Dan Reeves blocked the Bills' entry into the league. League rules required a unanimous vote, but the vote, which included the other AAFC teams that were already admitted, was only 9-4 in favor.[2] League commissioner Bert Bell had already put out a schedule based on the 13 teams, and Reeves cited as his excuse for voting against admission was simply that "it was silly to vote in a new city without first having a good idea where my teams would be playing and when."[1]

Buffalo owner James Breuil, having lost $700,000 on the team, was instead content to accept a one-fourth share of the Browns, and the NFL was not inclined to add a fourth team (even though the addition of three teams made for an odd number of teams in the league). The American Football League, a minor league formerly known as the "American Association," offered the Bills a spot in their league, but Breuil declined. Coming with Breuil to Cleveland were three Bills players; the rest were dispersed in a dispersal draft among the NFL teams.

Buffalo would have to wait until 1959 to again have a pro team, when Ralph Wilson acquired an American Football League franchise for Buffalo, which he also named the Bills, presumably after the AAFC team. The Buffalo Bills are still in operation as an NFL team to this day.

No....

It's a popular form of wings that go great with football.

[culinary names]
The Buffalo Wings
The Buffalo Chicken
The Buffalo Sauce...

[based on the last syllable pun on "low"...]
The Buffalo Lifes
The Buffalo Bar
The Buffalo Score

[based on SB history]
The Buffalo Firs ("Buffal-Ohfers")
Buffalo and four
The Buffalo Fail
The Buffalo NFC's *****

[misc/historical/etc]
The Kelly Girls
The Buffalo Canadiens
The Buffalower Ontario

okay that's all I got right now.

But actually I don't even hate these guys. I kind of admired their reaction to the merciless asskicking we administered in 07.... while everyone else is complaining about "running up the score," their reaction was "it's our job to stop them and we didn't." That says volumes. You have to give them credit, they're the anti-San Diego. They never have the money, the talent, or even a guarantee they'll be in the league, but they don't make excuses and whine.

Hats off, even if your city is named for a nearly extinct herd animal, and your team is named after a barbershop quartet!

(I mean, "Patriots" isn't too scary... "Texans" is generic... your wild animal names like "Bears" and "Lions" might strike fear into the heart, in a good year... but even on a run of hypothetical league dominance... how can you be afraid of a freaking barbershop quartet??? They don't even have MUSKETS!)

The Bills were not named after a barbershop quartet.

My submission to re-naming the Buffalo Bills?

The Buffalo Chips.

Everyone around here has seemingly come to an agreement that he Bills are the AFC East team we like the most. The feeling is not mutual over there. Just wait until they start beating us again. The hate will rise to mid-90's level hate for that organization once again.

Just wait until they start beating us again.

I'm pushing 50, Kontra, and can't reasonably expect to live past, say, 90.

If I'm going to hate 'em, better to go ahead and do it now. I don't think that's enough time.

We HAVE been waiting ... It's been what -- six, seven years? I'm not saying they won't rise to the occasion now and then, but they're still a long way off from being a consistent threat. My regular-season road trip to Orchard Park is always something to look forward to. :singing::rocker:

There are rumors that they'll be unleashing a furious "no-huddle" offense this year that make the old Kelly-Reed days look like last year's Browns.

I honestly think the Bills go winless this year...

Remember the 1st game last season? Were it not for 2 super catches by Ben Watson (remember him?) and a fumbled KO return, it was a big W for the Bills.

Uh, oh. Watson's gone!

didn't kampman sign for the jags?

I don't understand the wholesale changes on defense. The Bills defense seemed to be coming together late in the year and looked to have the makings of very good young unit. I don't understand bringing in a new system when you're so close with a young group. I thought the Davis, Troup and Carrington moves were pretty good, but I don't see difference makers in that group. Is it worth the risk of a potentially great player like Pozluzny or Byrd not fitting the system?

Buffalo could have built offensively in this draft, while adding a piece or two to bolster an emerging defense. Now they essentially start over, installing a new system with rookies and questionable veteran fits while giving a potentially elite 3-RB attack no blocking and no running game.

On the bright side. The 2011 draft appears to be rich in top tier QB talent. Buffalo will probably take a safety.
