Re: Schefter: Shawn Springs released

Figured he wouldn't make it... good.

Re: Shawn Springs released; Ted Larsen signs deal

Shawn Springs, Chris Baker, Adalius Thomas gone.

Bad lockeroom guys who weren't good football players, great.

Re: Shawn Springs released; Ted Larsen signs deal

Count me among the surprised. I thought Springs was a stabilizing force late in the year. Maybe it was all the crap QBs the Pats faced down the stretch (Shaub excluded).

Springs struck me as the gritty vet CB that Belichick likes to keep around. Someone in the Char Scott or OTIS mold. Oh well, I'll take it as a statement of confidence in the young backs.

Re: Schefter: Shawn Springs released

Did anyone mention Locker Room cancer yet?

I see old has been covered. :)

Well said. Springs was AD's partner in crime. Remember their very public and sarcastic apologies in front of the press in the locker room. "Sorry Shawn."
"Sorry Adalius". ( although Springs was not one of the snow storm late arrivals, he sure had a fun time sticking it to BB. )

Bye, Bye Shawn.....................

Yes, there seems to be a trend here.

Re: Shawn Springs released; Ted Larsen signs deal

Its almost like the Corleones clearing up at the end of each Godfather movie.

So is BB Michael or Vito?

Re: Shawn Springs released; Ted Larsen signs deal

good question.

what we DO know is Fredo is in Cleveland

Re: Shawn Springs released; Ted Larsen signs deal

Dr. Bill Belichick continues his surgical excision of cancerous growths on the Patriots roster.

Re: Springs Cut, Larsen signed.

they're about to sign Mankins to a major deal...this release was to clear Springs 3 year, $9 million contract from 2008...i believe that they could still resign him for a 1 year cheap deal

Shawn Springs was signed in 2009, not 2008, and would have only a minimal effect on the 2011 cap in terms of re-signing Mankins.

This makes sense. There is no reason to have him on the roster right now. It clears cap space. It allows the Pats to look all off season at what they have. Finally if it comes to pass that the Pats get some injuries at CB then resigning Springs to a vet minimum deal in August makes a lot of sense.

Don't forget that Springs is a good match up in red zone D against big WRs....and there are A LOT of big WRs in the division this year. 35 year old, 13 year vets don't need to participate in EVERY single OTA and practice. I think in certain situations Springs can be a productive player with the Pats, and if he ultimately ISN'T resigned, then it will tell me that BB is happy with his younger, though smaller guys.

Ken - can you name (even) one "big WR" Springs shut down in the Red Zone last year? (and this is not a rhetorical question).

Cutting Springs clears EXACTLY zero additional cap room compared with cutting him after the end of the season.

Don Tuna: I knew Sparano was going to have to go through all this and Mangini... well, Mangini was... But I, I never wanted this for you. I work my whole life, I don't apologize, to take care of my family. And I refused to be a fool dancing on the strings held by all of those big shots. That's my life, I don't apologize for that. But I always thought that when it was your time, that you would be the one to hold the strings. Commissioner Belichick, Owner Belichick, something.

Belichick: Another pezzonovante.

Don Tuna: Well, there wasn't enough time, Bill. There just wasn't enough time.

How can it clear cap space if there's no cap?!?

Re: Shawn Springs released; Ted Larsen signs deal

I agree that this was an attitude cut.

There is no way Shawn Springs is the 81st player on the roster. As a recent starter, he is more valuable than a Terrence Johnson at CB, or an Australian rugby player, or a 10th DT like Amon Gordon.

Further, cutting him costs $900K against the 2011 cap, if there is one. His salary of $2.2mm for a part-time starting corner wasn't overly expensive.

This does seem to set up a competition between Wheatley and Arrington for a fifth CB slot.

I nominate Ernie Adams for Tom Hagen.......

I think he may also have a hand in excising the Congressional Cancer Arlen Specter...

Buh-BYE, Arlen.

Re: Schefter: Shawn Springs released

Why now, though?

Chemistry. It's a necessary ingredient if you want to play team defense. This is a very young and talented CB unit that has an opportunity to grow TOGETHER. Now is the time to weed out any negative influences -- which Springs may have been. His release now allows for McCourty, Wheatley, Wilhite, and Butler to receive lots of valuable reps while competing for the LCB position. Arrington won't offer much at the position, but remains a high effort ST demon.

Including the Safeties, the entire DB group has tremendous potential. Two first-rounders and three second-rounders is quite an investment. And they're all young.
