Re: Speculation: Mankins may ask for the biggest contract for a Guard in league histo

I doubt he will expect to paid the most in history he may ask but I am sure he dose not expect that much. My guess is he will end up some where around top five money. The pats better pay up with light nearing the end they need to keep him around as a veteran leader, besides they just signed Burgess I know for substantially less but it would send a bad message if they didn't pay one of your top performers but payed an under performing DE.

Re: Speculation: Mankins may ask for the biggest contract for a Guard in league histo

They said it's conceivable that he could, that is an order of magnitude less significant that "speculation than he may". It's not speculation that he might do it, it's just some guy saying he could.

Re: Speculation: Mankins may ask for the biggest contract for a Guard in league histo

He could (anythings possible) but if he wishes to remain on this team I doubt he will.

Re: Speculation: Mankins may ask for the biggest contract for a Guard in league histo

I'll let him walk.

He's not a top 5 Guard in this league. If Stephen Neal was fully healthy, Mankins wouldn't be the best Guard on this team.

Re: Speculation: Mankins may ask for the biggest contract for a Guard in league histo

6 or 7 million a year is with he will ask for IMO and he is worth it he is the only O line men that has not missed a game in the last 3 years for the pats

he is still young and will be a all pro for the next 5 or 6 years he is one of the best G's in the NFL

Mankins is clearly a top 5 guard in the league. He's the best lineman on the team. He's only 28. He's started 89 straight games. I'd love for him to take a Brady/Bruschi type discount, but Mankins has earned the big pay day.

Jahri Evans.
Steve Hutchinson.
Chris Snee.
Carl Nicks.
Stephen Neal.

When Healthy, all are better than Mankins.

I have to agree with patriotscpfc.....When healthy Neal is better than Mankins. I think Mankins came out of College and developed into a really good pro bowl caliber O-linemen almost immediately but I have not seen much improvement since not to say he has gotten worse and I think he has been a little overated due to this. He is certainly one of the best guards in the league and deserves a big day and deserves more than Neal because of age and health.

Neal's body has shown pretty clear signs of breaking down due to injury and/or age. The O-Line is hurt when he is not in, however we cannot be sure of the impact of the loss of Mankins because he has never been hurt. He has been about as dependable as it gets for us.

This is pretty much dead on. He's still in the prime of his career and has played out his rookie contract without even so much as missing a practice. I don't see why $6M - $7M per year (for about 5 years) would make the FO's buttholes pucker up. Anything more than that, though, and we should definitely start looking for his replacement.

Re: Speculation: Mankins may ask for the biggest contract for a guard in league histo

I'd like to think he's a top guard in the league.

For the most part he is but he has way slowed down and his upfield blocking is lacking.

I have to agree with both points.....I have always thought highly of Neal but he has gone up a peg after watching the oline without him at times the last few seasons I bet I would see something similar maybe even more drastic if Mankins went down.

First of all, you can't discount Mankins' "health." That is an extremely important quality. As far as that list goes, I just don't see how you can say they are all clearly better than Mankins and therefore he is not a top 5 guy. Hutch didn't seem himself last year and may be on the decline now. Neal is real good, but he is always injured. Nicks hasn't been around long enough to be considered among the elite IMO. I think Evans and Snee are right up there on Mankins' level as the top 3 guards in the game. I can't see how he could be ranked below #5 on anyone's list.

Re: Speculation: Mankins may ask for the biggest contract for a guard in league histo

There is no way that the FO will make Mankins the highest-paid OG in league history. At most, he will likely be offered approx. the 4th-highest contract in the league.

He obviously should at the very least be the Pats' highest-paid OLman, as he is currently the Pats' best OLman. His & the rest of the line's meltdown in the SB was extremely disappointing; any claims that he should be the highest-paid OG will therefore fall on deaf ears.

sez you.......even though mankins was a unanimous probowl starter twice in the last 3 years.

heh.....chris snee....LMFAO

Re: Speculation: Mankins may ask for the biggest contract for a guard in league histo

this is a side effect of the 'genius' front office.....since they don't extend until the last possible moment.

lets hear again how justin tuck beat mankins on one play and that makes him not top 5.....I like that one.....it really makes me laugh

Re: Speculation: Mankins may ask for the biggest contract for a guard in league histo

He should ask for the biggest contract for a guard. He's got a year longer in the league without missing a game than Evans, and 2 PB's to Evans' 1. Not saying that means he's worth that...there's no question Evans is the superior player right now, but he's also a year closer to UFA than Evans was, which puts more of a premium on getting him signed (theoretically), and if I'm him and I'm walking into a negotiation that's my jumping off point, for sure. Hell, if I were Mankins and my agent didn't ask for the biggest contract for a guard, I'd fire him on the spot.

I say what I see.

I'll also say the few times i've seen him live, he sucked.

He got *****slapped by Tampa multiple times.

Once a Guard gets in the ProBowl, he stays there.

I would like to see how the Line plays without him and with Neal. There wouldn't be the same drop-off.

Re: Speculation: Mankins may ask for the biggest contract for a guard in league histo

I agree with most of whats been said, but I compare him to Bruschi, now I am not saying he is anywhere near the player Bruschi was. But Mankins like Bruschi is and was more valuable to the Patriots than he would be to another team. Mankins like many have said has been a starter since his arrival which I think have spoiled some people, that is not the norm and he plays with an edge which this team desperately needs. He may not be talent wise a top five at his position but his value as a football player exceeds his talent level, much like the Vrabel and Teddy Bruschi those guys brought toughness and an attitude and that was sorely lacking last year.

Re: Speculation: Mankins may ask for the biggest contract for a guard in league histo

My 2 cents. Anyone who thinks Neal is better than Mankins isnt watching and/or thinks the fact that when Neal has been out his replacement has struggled is the yardstick to use.
