PatsCast Episode 2 (again with Jays52)

Hey everyone, it's that time of week again!

As I previously mentioned, we juggled our schedule a little bit for this week, and we've brought jays52 back on for another week. Frankly, I think we're just going to keep calling him until he gets sick of us and stops picking up. We meant to get this one out a little earlier tonight, but we got caught up in Celtics hysteria, so that sidetracked us for a few hours.

I'm not going to spoil it for you guys, but we rehash draft philosophy a bit, this time really focusing on what is required of players in a Fairbanks-Bullough 3-4 defense (as opposed to 1-gap systems like the Phillips 3-4 and what they play over in Pittsburgh under **** LeBeau). Once again, Right around when we reach the limit of our knowledge, Jay steps in and absolutely crushes it, teaching me more about football in one ~30 minute conversation than I'd probably learned in the 3 years prior to starting this podcast. If you guys get sick of my voice and want to jump right to Jay, he comes in right around ~19:40.

I just listened to Jay's part, and it was amazingly informative! I had some knowledge of the scheme and always yelled at the Dumervil and Matthews fans, but I feel like I understand it so much better now! I can't wait to go show up other Pats fans for not understanding this stuff and making incorrect assumptions because of that!

I have a 4 hour bus ride back home tomorrow, so don't worry. I will listen to the entire thing at least once! Great job, and hurry up on the next one!

Three questions I would ask Jay (after listening to the whole show):
1) Do Baltimore and NE play similar 3-4s?
2) Would Sergio Kindle have fit the Pats personnel needs -- Baltimore selected him after Gronk's selection.
3) There is a hot debate among some here as to whether Greg Hardy or Austen Lane would have been better than Mezko and about the utility perhaps of selecting OLBs like Brandon Lang & Lindsey Witten available late instead of Weston & Co. This issue is relevant because Jay mentions that he thinks Connor Barwin (picked after Brace in last year's draft) would have been a good fit in the Pats scheme. Would Hardy, Lane, Witten or Lang have fit what the Pats do?

Not all that much man. Played middle linebacker, runningback, center, quarterback, and slot in my 13 years of playing. Had a few offers after college to pursue a career in the sport (not on-field), but turned them down because I have other passions. Such a career would have required 18 hour days, 7 days a week. I'm far too into fishing, business, and boats to dedicate those kinds of hours to a singular goal. I'm just your average dude who is fascinated by the game.

Hey dude. Really, I can only answer #1. Baltimore plays an upfield, 1-gap (redundant, I know) scheme. They are disruption based and personell are recruited accordingly. This at least partially explains AD's epic Superbowl 42. That was a disruption gameplan in part due to playing against a mentally inept passer.

I don't have an answer for your other questions because I haven't seen enough tape on your guys. I do think Kindle was over rated, though. My suggestion is to take the rough rubric I outlined and apply it to the guys you watch. If the correlations hold, there is a good fit. Just take a pragmatic approach, watch them play, and don't take my word or anyone elses for your personal eval.

One question. You all claimed that the Patriots 3-4 introduced by Chuck Fairbanks in 1974 had the down lineman playing 2-gap style. While that might have been true of the DE's (Julius Adams and Mel Lunsford, I believe), it certainly wasn't true of the NT, Ray "Sugarbear" Hamilton. Hamilton played at about 245lbs, which was very light even in those days, and he has testified that he was moving on almost every snap in a slant or stunt. It was impossible that he could 2-gap a center, let alone withstand a double or triple team while 2-gapping. So are you claiming the DE's were 2-gapping while Hamilton was stunting with the ILB's alone? IIRC Sam Hunt in particular was indeed moving on the snap a lot, both to utilize his size (250++lbs: he was huge for an ILB back then) and to make up for his lack of speed. But I have to believe Hamilton's constant movement at the snap implies that the DE's were generally moving as well...

Finally, you neglected to mention that Chuck Fairbanks joined the Patriots from Oklahoma where he had been a successful HC. Particularly notable is that the Patriots 3-4 he introduced looked a lot like the traditional Oklahoma 5-2, which often was played with the ends standing up...
