OT: Jets "confident" they won't have blackouts

I know we've talked this to death in other threads, but it's in the news again:

Owner confident Jets will sell seat licenses, avoid blackouts - NFL - CBSSports.com Football

Anyone know if the Giants are having the same trouble?

The Giants have sold all of their PSL's that would effect the blackout rules. They still have plenty of club seats to sell that no one is buying.

The Jets have plenty of psls to sell, but they will never have a black out in NY. Between the network and the team they would buy the tickets. The potential loss of TV advertising revenue is worth so much more then buying a few thousand tickets.

Pardon my stupidity, but how do the PSLs change the blackout? I thought if the game wasn't sold out 72 hours before game time, period, the game was blacked out. (Though as we've seen the league usually grants extensions for another day or two.)

Club seats don't count towards blackouts. If they sold all of their club seats, odds are they sold (or will sell) all of their single game tickets. That means they will not have blackouts even if they don't sell a single club seat.

I know if the Jets don't live up to Jets' fan's lofty expectations, there will be plenty of blackouts during Jets games and they will all be alcohol related.

I believe the Giants have sold out all of their non club seats. The question for the Jets is that if they can't people to buy the psls do they then sell the tickets to individual games through ticketmaster? I have to believe at some point they will do this.

Woody Johnson claims he won't, but he might have no choice if the rumored estimates of PSLs not sold are really over 15,000 rather than the 10,000 that the Jets acknowledge (although 10,000 is still a ton of seats that aren't likely to get PSL purchases).

I can't imagine he would consider not selling them to the public. Imagine having even 5,000 tickets empty on gameday? Regardless they will not have any black outs.

Wicked Pissah! Us Pats fans will have access to even more away game tix!

But if he does that he will never see the PSL money, right?
Who would ever let themselves be held hostage by the psl, if the tickets end up on sale anyway? He will lose a lot more in the long run by not sticking to his guns.

no you won't. they're not selling the leftovers on a game by game basis because it would be unfair to those who shelled out thousands for a psl. the jets will have a ton of empty seats if they don't finish selling the psls in the next couple months. god i hate the idea of the psl...

I would imagine so. He could try and sell the psls on those seats after the first season. The problem is that people are already trying to sell their psls at below what they bought them for. Even though technically they are not allowed to sell them until March of 2011.

The thing thing sucks. New York Unions pushed the stadium cost to twice what it would cost in any other city. They only built the stadium for the luxury boxes and the club seats. They have 200 luxury boxes that they will probably make a fortune off of. They should have let the people who had the rest of the tickets keep them and increase the prices but no psl.

PSL's are a scam. If you hold onto the PSL for the life of it, do you get investment back? Of course not.

Well, there are probably going to hundreds of thousands or even millions of Jets and other teams fans vying for those 10,000 seats on an individual game level. Odds are you are not going to get more than one set of tickets for one game. So if you want to be assured of getting a full season of tickets every year, you will have to buy PSLs. If the Jets release 10,000 seats per game to public, the only people who actually benefit are the scalpers and ticket brokers who will gobble a large portion of them up and apply their own version of PSLs on them.

This makes no sense. You're suggesting they will leave the seats empty if they can't sell them as PSLs?

I can see it now: the Angry Fire Elf leading his cheer to the stadium's full upper deck from an empty lower deck. Classic.

If they try to sell those tickets w/o the PSLs, my guess is that there will be a class-action lawsuit filed in a New York minute. The Jets were promoting the PSLs both as a prerequisitie to buying those tickets and as an investment. If they start selling those tix w/o PSLs, they will be diminishing the value of all the "investments" they sold. As a Patriots fan, this sounds almost too good to be true.

that is precisely what i'm saying. imagine you buy a psl, spend 4k for it, then another 2k on tickets. then after all that, you find out that seats in the rows below you are open to buy because the jets could not sell the psls. how pissed would you be that you spent that money and didn't wait it out?

There's a loophole in the blackout rule not known about til recently.

Neil Best of Newsday has identified the silver bullet that a team can utilize in order to ensure that the three-hour infomercial will air on local television.

His article explaining the dynamic is trapped behind a pay wall, but Best has spoken about the loophole to the folks at JoeBucsFan.com.

"I was not aware of this until this week, frankly, and several prominent, experienced people I know in pro football were not aware of it either," Best said. "But, sure enough, it turns out a team can cut a check for 34 percent of the face value of unsold tickets to cover the visiting team share and, presto, problem solved!"

If that's the case, it puts those breathless efforts to sell remaining tickets via an extension of the 72-hour deadline a little ridiculous. Let's say 5,000 tickets are unsold with 72 hours to go and the home team has finagled a 24-hour extension to sell the seats. And let's also assume the average price of the unsold tickets is $100.

What the fans are never told is that the billion-dollar business facing the banishment of its product from local television can remedy the situation by writing a check to the road team for, under the assumptions made above, $170,000.

Wrong. The seats that have been set aside for PSLs, will be sold on a game by game basis IF the PSL for the seats aren't sold. Once the PSL sells, then that particular seat won't be put out to the public.

The PSLs guarantee the HOLDER the rights to the seat. If the PSL isn't sold, then the team is going to open it up for the public just to make some money from it.
