I'd like to see what people think about the Patriots Run Defense.

How many Yards per game, and YPC, will the Pats Defense yield in 2010?

How about 2011?

Just to recall the Pats Run Defense in 2009 yielded 110.5 Yards per game, and 4.4 Yards per Carry.

My prediction is 99 Yards per game.

The rushing yards on average will be 4.0 YPC.

Keep in mind that the Pats also played nine games against the top six rushing teams in 2009, including the Jets (#1), Miami (#4) and the Ravens (#5) twice each, plus Tennessee, Carolina and NO. Probably brought the Pats average YPG and YPC allowed up a bit, don't ya think?

In contrast, Green Bay had the best run defense based on raw stats. But they played eight games against bottom ten rushing teams and faced only one top six team (BAL) all season.

Good stuff, MaineMan. I think that does bring some perspective to the stats. Nonetheless, I do think we need to improve against the run situationally; if we can limit teams on first and second down, I think we'll magically see our pass-rush improve. Or at least that's my hope. :p

Thanks. I just dislike stats out of context.

BTW - just reported on RotoWorld - Shawne Merriman has fired Tom Condon as his agent, speaking of potential pass-rushers for the Pats. Not saying that anything will happen, but at least Merriman is no longer repped by an agent the Pats won't deal with.

That is exactly what I think too. It seemed against the good teams they were always in 3rd and 2 and that makes it hard to pass rush, and many times you can't stop the run without repeatedly yielding a conversion. They just couldn't get off the field against the good teams.

If you yield short runs on first and second downs, you're free to go all out on third down pass rush.

This is true, IF you have a secondary that can cover.

It seems to me, though, that with the personnel changes on the Fins and Jets, neither team will be quite as insistent or strong with their running games as last season and more likely to attempt to attack through the air. Questions about the potential effectiveness of Henne and Sanchez aside, this probably puts a bit more emphasis on having very good coverage and a stronger pass rush for those four games.

OTOH, it seems likely that Buffalo may be going the other direction and may be much better on the ground than last season (assuming their relatively young O-line improves). Not saying that they'll suddenly vault into the top six, just that it's something to take into account a bit more than previously.

Still, that's six games against teams that may have legitimately strong running games, plus BAL, and also Cinci (#9 last year) and the Browns (#8). So, again, nine games against teams who could end up in the top ten in rushing. And Adrian Peterson in Week 8.

That may be true, but it won't get any easier this season. They play four games with Miami and the Jets, a game each with the Ravens, Steelers, Vikes, Packers, and games with Chargers and Colts. Of these good teams only the Colts are not a particularly good running club. So they play 9 games with good running, winning, clubs once again. Both the Bills and Bears will try to win with the run, too, and neither is a shabby running team.

I dont think the Pats are high on his list after seeing that April fools joke on NFLN last month. When he was put under the gun, he tried to take the Pats down with him.

Didn't catch that one. What happened?

Here you go MaineMan. Oh no don't take away my dance!

NFL Videos: Merriman gets punk'd

Thanks.

IDK, he seemed like he was a good sport about it. As far as "taking the Pats down with him" goes, I don't really see it. He merely mentions the Pats in passing while commenting that other players/teams have mimicked his sack dance. He was much more direct and expansive mentioning Ocho Cinco and Jared Allen and their patented antics.

I don't think what's happened in the past would prevent him from doing his best to be a beast for the Pats if the Chargers tried to screw him over (in his opinion) on a contract and then traded him out. Frankly, I think BB could get way more out of him than Turner has. Even if it was only for a year or two.

"Run Game??"

  • 1 ~ Tyrone McKenzie is now 100% healthy, and ready to resume his Ascension to Excellence.
  • 2 ~ Jerod Mayo is now 100% healthy, and ready to resume his Ascension to Greatness.
  • 3 ~ Brandon Spikes ~ mark me: "40" times are MEANINGLESS at ILB ~ is the Quickest, Baddest, most Ferocious, Violent, and ~ Praise Jeebus ~ PASSIONATE man in the Entire Valley, and drafting him at #62 ~ per my fervent prayers ~ was a FELONY.
  • 4 ~ Gary Guyton ~ who would've actually been our BEST ILB, 30 short months ago!! ~ is now FOURTH on our ILB Depth Chart, Praise Jeebus, Mother Mary, and Odin.

***

In other words: Will other teams be able to run effectively on the Patriots?

Possibly.

In 2023.

Editor's Note:

I should mention: I AM familiar with the concept of running outside the Tackles! :p

But with such a confluence of Force ANNIHILATING the Inside Run, in the years to come ~ or so I perceive it ~ the Outside Run becomes MUCH more predictable ~ and vulnerable.

Furthermore, I believe that ~ particularly after Halloween, once they've had enough time to work ~ Cunningham and Ninkovich will be consistently Setting the Edge.

All in all, I believe that the New England FootBall Patriots 2010 Defense ~ as WELL as the New England FooBall Patriots 2010 Offense ~ will absolutely STUN most of their Fans.

I'm pretty optimistic about the upcoming season, but I think you've been hitting the Kickapoo Joy Juice just a tad too vigorously.

;)

I see run defense to the right, as a huge problem in 2010. If anybody is thinking Slow poke spikes is going to be able to get outside against a Spiller or Johnson, they are sadly mistaken.

As for Ninkovich or Burgess or Cunningham or Crable being able to set an edge. That is ridiculous.

There are huge issues with our run defense as currently configured.

Heh! "Slow Poke Spikes"!

Yes, I'm sure there're many fans ~ a majority, in fact ~ who would agree with your take on him.

I would not.

It says here that the impact of Brandon Spikes at the Ted LineBacker Gig will be SEISMIC: His Processing Speed and Quality of Judgment are the Interior LineBacker equivalent of General Tom Freaking BRADY. He will QUICKLY eclipse Tyrone McKenzie and Gary Guyton, and it won't be long before we have both the best Inside Backers AND the best Inside 4...in the GAME.

It says here that Spikes' ability to discern the Play, and to React to it Quickly, Decisively, and FEROCIOUSLY...will be HORRIFYING to the Enemy...and that the Sam LineBacker will reap ENORMOUS benefits from it.

FootBall and BaseBall are remarkably similar in some ways: Establishing Dominance Up The Middle by placing a disproportionate emphasis on acquiring the services of the very best, at those positions ~ Catcher, ShortStop, Second, and Center or Nose Tackle, Ted, Mike, and the Safeties ~ creates a DISPROPORTIONATE advantage: a Ripple Effect that GREATLY assists the Tertiary Players in doing their Good Work.
