Don't overlook the UDFA's

Re: Don't overlook the UDFA's.

BJGE was a ESPN top 10 highlight drop away from probably getting good playing time. I can't recall which game, but BJGE drops a diving catch in the endzone and BB took him out.

Like you said earlier though,if BJGE is cut, or one of Morris/Taylor is cut and BJGE is kept, we will see who is right.

You didn't answer my question though. You think Moris and Taylor can still provid at age 33 and 34? RBs usually tank at age 30.

Taylor will produce for about 5 games. Morris for about the same. For the rest of the season you are relying on LMo and Faulk if you cut Green-Ellis.

I'd like to cut Taylor and keep Paschall whether he is great or not. If he sucks, he's inactive. But, he's young and can learn. Maroney, Morris and Green-Ellis could handle the load with Faulk in there as well.

I don't think we can afford to keep 2 veterans as well as the ageing Faulk in the backfield.

Re: Don't overlook the UDFA's.

Yes, I expect that between them Morris and taylor can provide the 5-10 carries a game we need from them.

Why aren't you cutting Faulk? He is older than Morris and almost as old as Taylor.
=============================================================
The reality is that we have a roster of a young starter, and three backs in their 30's as backups and for certain game situations. belichick has always like to use veterans as backups and special situation situations.
==============================
MARONEY is our starter. We'd be much improved if he ran 25 times a game.
FAULK is our passing down back because of his blocking and pass-catching skills.
===============================
TAYLOR is the backup for Maroney.
MORRIS is the backup for Faulk, and can also play be our short yardage fullback.
If either of these in injured, the other would be expected to get more reps.
It would not be unreasonable to have only three rb's active, although 4 should be the norm.
===============================
That's all we need. If someone else can perform any of these roles better, then let them compete and win one of the roster spots!

I've stated before, Faulk is an exception since he is a pass catching back.
===================
Maroney can't carry the ball 25 times a game, period.
======================
I don't call Maroney or anyone else the starting RB. We have the 3-headed mediocre dragon in Maroney-Taylor-Morris running the ball.
======================
When it's snowing in the divisional round and we can't run because the old guys are injured/done, and Maroney proves innefective once again,people will realize it was a mistake not drafting a RB.
======================
You can have all the WRs and TEs you want, if you can't run it consistently you will get beat in the end. (Superbowl 42, 43, and 44!)

Re: Don't overlook the UDFA's.

Hopefully Pat Pachall can be one of them. :)

Agreed! That kid Farnhum (sp?) too, seems like the type that absolutely should not be ruled out! Those types that are the best at every level they've played at, who out work everybody else, just don't seem to take no for an answer. I have a feeling about him.

Re: Don't overlook the UDFA's.

OK. I agree with Belichick and you would have a 3-headed mouse of Maroney, Green-Ellis and Paschall. You would depend on Green-Ellis in the snow. Of course, you well understand that Green-Ellis has been available on Friday for the last two winters. Belichick judged to have him inactive on a regular basis, not even good enough for scrub or emergency reps.

Re: Don't overlook the UDFA's.

1) Belichick will cut any player not named Welker that he expects to be available for only five games.

2) When both were injured last year, Green-Ellis wasn't used. Why do you think that happened?

3) I would be fine with Belichick cutting either or both and replacing them by JAG veterans.

4) There is a place for UDFA's to learn. It is called the Practice Squad.

Taylor will produce for about 5 games. Morris for about the same. For the rest of the season you are relying on LMo and Faulk if you cut Green-Ellis.

BJGE is entering his third year as the face of our franchise. I have no idea what you are talking about. :rolleyes:

I do think Paschal has the best chance of the UDFAs...BUT..I also think Fletcher, Ventrone and Johnson have a shot at making it on special teams. No one has mentioned Johnson and I think this CB may surprise. Will be interesting to see who of teh UDFAs makes it to training camp even..as some will be cut prior.

Re: Don't overlook the UDFA's.

Ok, i'll fight back then.

If Practice Squad is a place for UDFA's to learn, why did Green-Ellis make the roster. Pierre Woods, Gary Guyton, Mike Wright. 4 guys still here who made the team out of camp. Lockett was dragged off Cleveland's Practice Squad onto the roster. Hoyer made the team despite what most thought before Training Camp.

Green-Ellis didn't make the roster, he was on the practice squad. He was promoted from the squad because Maroney thought it'd be cool to get injured. :rocker:

Re: Don't overlook the UDFA's.

I also think Green-Ellis will be gone. We did not have one consistent running back who could stay on the field last year. You'd think Green-Ellis would've stepped up under those circumstances if it was ever going to happen.

Re: Don't overlook the UDFA's.

You made your point well. Woods, Guyton, Wright and Hoyer were exceptional UDFA's who made the 53-man roster and eventually contributed. Green-Ellis wasn't good enough and made the Practice Squad.

We may have one such surprise this year. Personally, I consider our last three sevenths on a par with the UDFA's. My guess for the one exceptional long-long shot to make the squad is Deaderick, my 2010 binkie. Others will have their binkie as one of the three late sevenths. Others will choose an UDFA.

Fair enough.

I think that Deaderick may make the squad.

Then again, I've got a feeling that Darryl Richard sticks around. Those 2 might compete for a back-up 3-4DE spot on the roster.

If not, one may not survive to stay on the Practice Squad.

BJGE looked decent as a lead blocker towards the end of the year. He's also good at running vs Buffalo. Other than that, he seems like a nice, replaceable guy.

so am I.....

so am I.....

Too bad Maroney can't. :D

In two games vs. Buffalo:

33 carries 113 Yards 1 TD 3.4ypc

Sorry couldn't resist.

Re: Don't overlook the UDFA's.

And why do you think that Green-Ellis sat on the bench when there were two injured running backs for times in 2009?

No player "deserves" a chance to play in the regular season. A player needs to prove himself in the preseason and in practices. Belichick puts the best players on the field. When we had only Maroney and Faulk healthy, Green-Ellis still wasn't worth having on the field. A player that does not get on the field when two players are injured at his position is either a raw developmental rookie, a top special teamer or a roster mistake.

In 100% hindsight, it is clear that there were better uses for a roster spot in 2009 than using it for Green-Ellis. At the time, and in a previous post today, I suggested a short yardage back or a fullback. A 3rd TE also comes to mind.

I have nothing against Green-Ellis. He's been given two years to show Belichick something. If he makes the 53, I will accept that he is a better option than those who do not make the squad. Given the situation in 2009, I would find it surprising that a roster spot will be there for him unless he can show that he is a better player than Morris or Taylor, AND hen is a player who Belichick would expect to play if one of the other running backs were injured.

Miguel,

No offense....but what is it that makes you believe Taylor and Morris have that much "left" in the tank? Neither one of these guys was able to stay on the field for much of last season......and are both very banged up....and old. I would think BB has some confidence in BJGE or he would have been gone by now.....I seem to recall him coming in with Maroney a fair amount when Taylor and Morris were out.....and he was decent when he got alot of reps. I remember 2008 he was running well when Maroney was down.....

Would not be surprised to see Morris or Taylor (if not both)....cut this offseason....

Wow, it's simply amazing how many non-RB threads turn into RB arguments. I didn't think people could argue the same thing over and over again 100 times in 100 different places.

miguel = mgteich?
