Now let me start by saying I was happy with our overall draft. The trades while frustrating at the time watching were fantastic moves. This is just a fun exercise to see what alternatives we could've come up with.

22 - I would have taken Dez Bryant. The talent was too great to pass up IMO. Randy Moss said himself he likely won't be a part of this team next year. The WR class might be better next April, but the need for another deep threat is NOW. Granted this kid Taylor Price looks like a burner, so who knows.

44 - Rob Gronkowksi. Pat's nailed that selection IMO. He may need time to develop, but in the long run he could be one of the greatest TEs of all time.

Trade 47 & 119 to AZ for 58 & 89 as they did.

Trade 53 to NO for 64 & 94

58 - Jared Veldheer
64 - Jon Asamoah
89 - Corey Wootton
94 - Austen Lane
6th rd comp - Kyle Calloway
7th - Max Hall QB BYU
7th rd comp - Brandon Deaderick
7th rd comp - AJ Jefferson
7th rd comp - Brandon Lang

Obviously I felt the OL needed to be addressed more than most.

What would you have done different?

Hmm...I don't think you can invent trades after the fact! The Saints sat pat in the actual draft and got excellent value at#64, what makes you think they would have given up their 3rd to move up 11 spots?

I did really want Asamoah, though, so I sympathize. I think you just have to be content with him at #53.

I probably would of screwed everything up by taking Dez Bryant. The temptation of that pick can take hold of the best of us.

Had I done that we would not of had a 2nd next year and a couple of less players this year that I really liked.

Silently I had my thoughts about Cunningham over Dunlap. Dunlap had seen a lot more double teams than Cunningham and I think he is more ideal to get after the passer. Evidently there's something else there that BB see's that I don't. Production stats are similiar, as are their measurables. Time will tell on this one.

I liked Corey Wooton a lot and would of definately taken a flyer on him. All in all though this was a very good draft for the Pats. I'm just glad I'm not in charge of putting the puzzle together. That front 7 is one big jigsaw puzzle to me right now.

Nab Cam Thomas, the Mt. Cody lookalike NT from North Carolina, grabbed by the Bolts in the fourth round, which might be one of the best picks of the draft.

I guess Ron Brace will step it up this year.

I assume you mean at 42. If he's on the board at 43, he's a Ratbird.

Obviously I felt the OL needed to be addressed more than most.

It would appear that BB felt there was more value elsewhere and/or a lot of the replacements are already on the team.

There were several guys I had targeted for the Pats that I thought we'd have no problem picking up with our existing picks and trades into the mid-rounds similar to what actually happened. However, Alualu went nearly a round ahead of where he was projected; Te'o-Nesheim almost two rounds, Andre Roberts about a half-round ahead (after which we dumped the #89 for the 2011 2nd-rounder - good move). Misi and Troup went earlier than we had a pick. Gerhart, Ben Tate and Hardesty all went earlier than projected.

Up till the last three rounds, there really wasn't anything I COULD have done different. Even then, Mike Kafka went early. To the Eagles. AGAIN!

BTW - my binkys ended up being better than half the Eagles draft (IOW several of the guys who "went early"). I think I deserve some compensation from their FO for my "scouting". Seriously. Damning them to Hell every five minutes just doesn't seem like enough anymore.

Think we might regret not having taken Giffin instead of the second rounder in 2011.

Hindsight is indeed 20/20.

It is also obvious that everyone was wrong in what was the Patriot diagnosed major weakness. Belichick thought a position other than OLB Pass Rusher was the most important. He took several actions, all with his own diagnosis in mind, so he viewed it as extremely important, too.

When you analyze it, he was correct.

Belichick viewed the Run Defense as an area that needed the most urgent correction, not Pass Rush. To beef up Rush Defense that ranked 16th, and allowed 4.4 YPC, was the unspoken theme of both draft and offseason acquisitions. Not being able to stop the Run is a glaring weakness, that could have led to a 4-12 record, and did lead to a 10-6 and early Playoff exit. So Belichick took several coordinated actions to close that self-diagnosed weakness.

1) He drafted a CB who is noted for his good rush defense and tackling ability, as much as his Pass Defense, McCourty.
2) The first veteran additions to the Team were a pair of former First Round Defensive linemen, who are both more noted for their Run rather than their Pass Rush Defense in Lewis and Warren.
3) Then he drafted a strong SILB LB in the second round, in Brandon Spikes. Someone who is noted for containing the run, and yielding fewer YPC.
4) Only then did he draft an OLB candidate, in Jermaine Cunningham; but even there, he selected one who is "complete", and has a good run Defense backround as well.
5) He added the best Punter, in Mesko. That is a defensive addition, too.

Bill's Defense and defensive strategy is based on requiring long sustained drives for the opponent to score. He expects that they will get stopped as often by their own screw ups, as by the Pats Defense, but in either case, they don't score. He is correct too; the Expected Value function for scoring is inversely related to the length of the drive.

Mesko may add another First down requirement and 10 yards further to go, with additional chances for the opposition to mess up, especially when they can't just run repeatedly, with success, like they did in 2009.

The balance of Belichick's draft was adding quality players to a talented squad, whenever his choices came up. Grounkowski but even more, Price and Hernandez, along with Larsen and the tradeup for Welch, was depth building and reconstruction on Offense.

A next generation Offensive line is already shaping up, all hand selected candidates by Scarnecchia. Featuring Volmer the critical LOT already in place, Larsen/Ohrnberger at C ,and the other and Bussey and/or Connolly at G, along with Levoir and/or Welch at RT.

The only change I might have made, never had a chance of occurring, as things turned out. If Roland McClain had slid to 16 or so, I would have traded up for him; but he didn't, so the question is moot. Spikes still fits the bill, and he can be platooned, if necessary. Belichick has ensured there are other quality players aboard that allow such a scenario.

All in all, I think it was a magnificent virtuoso display of offseason player acquisition, using both Draft and Free Agency. There is nothing I could criticize, except possibly some resignings; but the offseason is not yet completed, and these may yet occur.

I would have traded our entire draft for Ndamukong Suh. That's a lot easier then figuring out 12 players to take after the draft :p

knowing now what the pats knew....

1 devin
2 gronk
3 cunningham
4 spikes
5 price
6 aaron

I think that with hindsight you managed to create possibly the worst mock draft for the Patriots I've seen all year. Gronkowski might be the 1 boom or bust pick the Pats made. And you're doubling down on the boom or bust philosophy with Bryant.

Wootton and Lane are both tweeners for this team. The only picks of yours that I like are the 7th round comp picks. Nice work.

The trade of a low 3rd for a likely high 2nd next year with Carolina seems like a great deal.

But our DE/OLB depth is still atrocious. Remember last year when everybody was talking about how Woods and Crable would step up, and we shouldn't worry about it? Well here we are again.

Apparently the Pats were on the phone with Everson Griffen and ready to take him before Carolina called with the offer for pick 89. It seems like he would have had great value there and would have addressed a major need, which Cunningham alone didn't come close to filling.

We needed to upgrade both OLB spots, and we still could use another strong but athletic 4-3 end.

Given the similarities between Cunningham and Griffen (About the same size, Griffen faster and stronger, but lazier), perhaps Griffen shouldn't have been the pick, but Sapp was still available as well and would have been a nice compliment to Cunningham.

Think about how much we gave up for Burgess last year in an act of desperation. We're likely to be in an equally desperate situation come this pre-season.

Getting the future (high) second rounder was great, but if/when we come up short again next year because our biggest need was once again not fully addressed in the draft, it might be hard to justify.

If we had just drafted Barwin instead of Brace last year, we wouldn't have needed to trade the farm for Burgess, and could have taken Cody instead of Cunningham this year, and we would have been more competitive last year.

This could very well be the last year for both Brady and Moss on the Pats.

I'm hoping that Spikes can play and excel this year on the outside as well as inside, ala Maualuga with the Bengals (in their 4-3).

If so, then my concern is lessened and we should be in good shape with a great extra 2nd rounder as well.

Right now, our OLBs seem real sh#tty against the run, and in coverage as well.

That report was confirmed false. Plus, I highly doubt a lazy underachiever like Griffen was anywhere on the Pats board.

FYI, that story was circulated but I believe it turned out to be untrue.

In general though, I share your concern -- but there wasn't anybody I really felt good about this year. It still blows my mind that they didn't take an OLB in the 2nd last year. (Dare I invoke your namesake?)

I too thought run defense was the weak link in our defense. However I would have taken Mt. Cody in order to solve that problem. How BB could pass on a kid that exceled against the run while playing in our defense in college is unfathomable.

I am on board with the McCourty pick 100% regardles of how he turns out. (See Tebucky Jones) But to pass on Mt. Cody and instead take a TE with a history of back problems is mind numbing.

The D Line is about being the bully, and how he could let a 370 pound bully (that makes everybody around him look better than they really are, see McClain) slip through his fingers in beyond me.

Next year BB should get a chance to draft RDE Bailey out of Miami, maybe then, we will be able to stop the run again.

Guys, what was the final word on Sapp as to why he dropped so far?

Overall though, it really does seem to be an outstanding draft. Not a single potential head case/drama queen among all the incoming rookies.

Still, taking Bryant at 24, and Griffen at 90 (instead of Price) and trading pick #53 (Cunningham) for an above average veteran CB would have been perhaps the best draft of all time, imho.

As it is, this draft could still be a stellar one. But get ready for Bryant to compete for the Pro-Bowl in short order.

I'm still thrilled with this draft, as so many of the picks are at positions of immediate need.

Last year, drafting Chung, Brace, and Tate (injured) all failed to address immediate positional needs, and the season suffered as a result.

I don't know about the entire draft, but definitelya big chunk, and included our 1st from 2011 as well.

He was the most perfect Seymour replacement to come along in years.

Whoa Bucky that was not nice! How can you say that without seeing how these guys play in the pro? I will agree with you that Dez (as I have said all along) would be a very very dubious pick. How could the Patriots draft a guy with a learning disability and who is late for every meeting?
