Would this make anyone feel better about the OLBs?

I guess they are better than Ninkovich, Woods, Crable but are old and likely won't contribute much on special teams... I am on the fence.

I'd like to see Burgess get another shot in the defense. They burnt some significant draft stock to get him - maybe he can live up to that potential this season? Maybe it's of significance that we've not seen much action on him though. Does his distance from the headlines suggest that he's washed up?

Funny you mention this, Greg Ellis name was mentioned on Sirius last week.. Pat Kirwan mentioned a couple of Vet names that could interest the Pats.. And the last name he mentioned, which is a dark horse, was Greg Ellis..

I know one thing, Ellis had his share of run ins with management in Dallas..

Ellis has already excelled in the 3-4 (in Dallas) I think he is the better option.

Burgess was on the field over 50% of the time last year. Ninkovich couldn't beat him out for reps. Burgess woould be a reasonable addition.

Ellis could also be brought in, but I expect that he doesn't have much left.

I'm not for or against Ellis but this argument makes no sense. Dissatisfaction with one team doesn't mean it will automatically happen with the next team. Dillon and Moss were both malcontents but came to NE and had huge success because they bought into the program. If Ellis could do the same, he'd be a solid addition. If not, then he'd be AD 2.0.

I don't think another OLB is worth the roster spot. We really only need another OLB for the base D - Woods, to me at least, is sufficient against the run at the position. Between Cunningham, Crable, Ninko, someone could emerge to challenge him.

When we go to the nickel, I wouldn't be surprised if we only saw one true 3-4 OLB on the field. We know TBC will be on the edge on one side - but if you threw Spikes, Guyton and Mayo on the field - you could disguise your 4th (or 5th rusher if you blitz) pretty well. Spikes pass rush is underrated - he can blitz effectively. I also think his pass coverage is underrated - I don't care what he ran, he's in the right place at the right time. If its just underneath stuff, his football IQ makes up for the [alleged] lack of speed.

We're never going to find a Ware who wreaks havoc on the edge (maybe w/ that Oak pick in 2011), and the reality is any team can find a guy to run by the tackle and force the QB to step up - TBC is great at that and can finish - heck, Burgess was fine at that, but couldn't finish - and one of our young OLBs will be sufficient as well. I think BB is going to shift the focus to interior pressure this year. Our pass rush will come from guys like Pryor, Lewis, Wright who can get under the OL and penetrate - and guys like Spikes & Chung who can blitz effectively for their positions.

Im not sure I agree. We go in with TBC as the leading OLB. I like TBC but he's not a 3 down OLB for my money. Cunninham is a project, Woods and Ninkovich are fill ins and who knows with Crabel. I think we badly need another body in there who can reliably set the edge. Ellis would be fine but need to bring him in now

I have visions of Miami last year and Henne having about 10 minutes to throw the ball. You can have Bailey, Revis and Asamougha playing CB but no one can cover for 15-20 seconds

Sure! After all, Ninkovich and Crable are so awesome that we should not even bring competition into Training Camp to compete with them, and to take one of their positions if one is injured.

As of now, we have lost Burgess and Thomas, and have replaced the, with Crable and Cunningham. I would note that Ninkovich could not get on the field much last year, because Belichick chose to play the best players that day: Thomas and Burgess.

Although I would like Burgess back on the cheap, Ellis is familiar with the Pats' system because he played under a very similiar system under Parcells.

Would be happy with either as long as they were one year deals and there wasn't someone better out there.
