Brown's Farnham signs on with Pats - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

Andy Hart [Correction: Erik Scalavino - Thanks Andy!] was very high on Farnham throughout rookie minicamp. He was the last tryout standing by the final practice on Saturday afternoon:

So, that means the only tryout player who made it through the whole camp was my early sleeper pick, #13. I surmised after the first practice that he was Buddy Farnham of Brown, and according to The Providence Journal, my guess was correct, although we haven’t had confirmation from team officials. As a follower of Brown football, I’ve watched Farnham flourish over the past three years. The guy’s got great hands, quick feet, good return skills, and runs crisp routes. Looks like he may get a chance to compete at the upcoming OTAs and mini-camp practices with the rest of the squad.

On the other end of the spectrum, Bryan Anderson from Central Michigan continued to struggle. He dropped yet another catchable ball in drills. With his size, I’d like to see him produce in this offense, but so far, he’s looked slow with below average hands. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and chalk it up to jitters, but that’ll have to end once the real practices start.

Nice story. The hole at WR looks plugged beyond necessity at the moment. If Brady likes any/all of these guys, would be a nice treat to see an adundance of threats to complement Moss and later on Welker.

Not too familiar with Farnham, other than the reports I've read since he attended the mini-camp, but he sounds like the type of kid I'd want to root for. Hopefully he continues to progress.

It was a mental exclamation point to me when I read the bit about the Patriots being 'well stocked at receiver'.

Its a far cry from the panic that was setting in amongst the more nervous members of the fanbase a few short weeks ago.

Good luck to the guy, he's got a guy like Edelman to try and copy - and he wasn't even a WR when he was drafted!

At the very least, a couple of these guys (Edelman, Tate, Price, Hernandez, Anderson) will pan out. I didn't include Holt in this list because I have all the faith in the world that he'll take Aiken's place. It's the other spots that I'm talking about.

Let's take a moment to give due credit to all the beat reporters who praised the anonymous receiver 13. (IIRC he was the one who juked Spikes so badly in one drill that he demanded an extra turn.) We really do get some good rookie camp insights from them every year.

That made me think Farnham might be able to contribute. I also liked Spikes' reaction to it.

I know everyone's optimistic after the draft, but I really feel like the last two drafts (plus next year's with our 4 picks in the top 2 rounds) will be our foundation for the next decade.

They have to be. The last two drafts and the next one (with two #1 and two #2) will either be the foundation and ground floor of our next run or we'll slip into "decent" mediocrity.

Regarding Farnham, I was expecting some little guy but he's 6'0 or 6'1" depending on the link, we have a nice little group of young WR coming along.

Haha, I'm at my dorm right now studying and one of the kids in my suite used to play with Buddy on their Lacrosse team in HS...

Yup ........ Good Point ..................... :yeahthat:

1) Farnham is 6'1 185 lbs, so he's bigger than the usual Pats smurf but appears to have the quickness trait that the Pats desire.

2) Coming from an Ivy League school, you know he's gotta be smart.

3) He was super productive in college, similar to the way Deion Branch racked up the numbers at Louisville.

4) It's too bad that Anderson is struggling, looks like he won't make the cut, but getting Farnham to go with Price seems to be a nice compensation prize from the UDFA pool.

5) I can't wait to see training camp. There's going to be LOTS of competition at all positions, and WR might be the must cutthroat competition of all. There's only going to be 5-6 roster spots available. Aiken/Stanbach will be fighting for their jobs, and I hope they get replaced by stronger competitors.

Farnham's Pro-Day height was 5'11 5/8"

Kid is from Andover, Mass. Ivy League Player of the Year!

I don't think Aiken and Holt are really going for the same spot. Aiken is battling with special teamers like Slater, Lockett, and Murrell; Holt is battling with Patten, Tate, et al. for the 4th/5th WR spot(s) behind Moss, Edelman, and Price.

Workout numbers at the Brown pro-day according to the YouTube:

10 yard split: 1.47-1.50
40 yard: 4.46-4.52
Shuttle: 4.0-4.03
3-Cone: 6.62-6.81

Those are great agility times. Among wide receivers at the combine, that would have been the best 20 shuttle and the 3rd best 3-Cone.

NFL Events: Combine Top Performers

The 40 was OK --would have been 7th best amongst WR's at the combine -- and the 10 yard split is also pretty good, although the combine isn't reporting those on its site.

Numbers-wise, looks like another good slot receiver candidate with decent speed and height, but great agility.

It's interesting the low end of all those numbers are better than McCourty's combine numbers, to compare him to the best athlete in the Patriot's draft class...

I was talking about Holt taking Aiken's spot (WR3) from last year.

Farnham looks intriguing, he is my binky for training camp.

I would put Holt ahead of Price. Price may intrigue us with his upside, but he hasn't played a down in NFL yet while Holt is a future Hall of Famer. Right now I would say it is Moss, Holt, Edelman and then Tate & Price (based on experience and upside). Welker would be number two if he would not have been hurt.

It all depends on who Brady clicks with.

You have seen what happened to WR's that Brady doesn't click with. That is the kiss of death.
