Would you draft McCourty even if we resign Bodden

The kid sounds like a ballhawk, solid tackler, and special teams demon. He blocked SIX punts in his college career and they say he's got soft hands, so any bad throw coming his way could turn into an INT!

Imagine Bodden-Butler-McCourty. That's a nickel D that you don't want to throw on! I think if he's still aroundin the 2nd, we might use one of our picks on him just on a BPA basis. You can't have enough corners in today's pass happy NFL! But of course we'll get a pass rusher or two as well!

I love the way McCourty plays, but he's moved up from a 3rd-4th rounder to a borderline 1st rounder. I don't think he's worth a 1st to us, not after resigning Bodden, but if he's somehow magically available in the late 2nd or 3rd (and we acquire a 3rd rounder), then I'm all for drafting him.

We should pick up a developmental CB regardless. For the record, my money's on Walter Thurmond III, who I think could be better than Butler once he rehabs from his knee injury. Very quick and instinctive, terrific on special teams, absolute clutch player. Great guy. My favorite corner in the draft. After using 2 2nds and a 4th and bringing in 2 solid FAs at CB over the last two years, I'm going to say no. I'm completely fine with Bodden, Butler, Wilhite, Wheatley, and possibly Springs at CB, and if we draft McCourty in the 1st or 2nd, either him or Butler is stuck at nickel back for the next 4 or 5 years. I'd much rather spend a 1st or 2nd round pick on HB, WR, TE, OG, DE, or OLB than CB right now.

Depends on where. I've got him as the #3 corner in the draft, so If I were the GM and he was available late in the 2nd round, I'd probably draft him, depending on how our first picks went.

I'd almost forgotten I'd posted this! Didn't know it would end up prophetic in nature. Looks like BB liked him a lot as well. I was thinking of him with one of our early seconds at that time. McCourty's stock was climbing into the 1st round though and that's where we wound up taking him.

What it comes down to is BB knows what he is going to be doing with the defense next year, and we can just go off what he did last season. If he plans on playing a lot more nickel, then McCourty's value rises in the first round.

Me personally would of liked to see a pass rusher, but I've been saying that since 2005 and nothing as changed!

Did you mean Kareem Jackson? Because he was taken ahead of the Pats pick at #20 by the Texans. So, eh. Looks like the Pats didn't feel the need to move up for Jackson over McCourty. Not to mention they got an extra 3rd round pick by being patient and trading back while STILL getting their guy.

I was one of the HUGE Dez Bryant supporters but the more I read and see about McCourty I have to slap myself in the face.....McCourty was a great pick and if butler, bodden and McCourty all can play at their top levels the next couple years we will be stacked at CB......I love the pick....

The Patriots Offense is still sound; and is slowly being rebuilt as we speak. New Offensive linemen are being groomed. New upper quality TEs and WRs are being groomed.

The Defense is in the midst of being rebuilt. It does not yet look like a dominating Championship level Defense once again. So more effort is needed there. The weakest areas are to the rear of the Defensive line, so yes I would draft good secondary players until there is no room at the Inn for any more. So yes, I would draft linebackers until there is no room a the Inn for anymore.

Post draft, the secondary now has 6 upper quality or upper draft range CBs and four upper range Safeties, so the Inn is now nearing full.

The LB corps now has 9 highly regarded LBs, of whom two are UDFAs but both have played as regulars or team leaders. Gary Guyton is the incumbant starter at ILB and Pierre Woods leads the team in ST tackles every year. Two OLB have double digit sack totals in their NFL biographies. While two others are high draft picks, for developement. So I would say the LB corps is getting full, too.

On the "forgotten DL", the Pats added two rookies last season; and now two older, former First Round DLs, to go with their two incumbent First Round DLs. There are other good players like Wright and young candidates as well.

The massive quantity rebuilding phase is done; now the quality improvement phase is the emphasis. Here the quality seems potentially exemplary, but not proven.

Looking forward, age now exists only at 1 WR, 1 Guard, 1 C, and 1 OLB 1 CB position and RB. In every case, a talented youngster or more exists and is being groomed.

I suspect this Defense, and the Team as a whole, will be more impressive at the end of the coming season than at its beginning.

What I post is my opinion at the time.

As the draft approached, I re-evaluated.

Two weeks before the draft, I had us choosing among Odrick, Wilson and McCourty.

The week before the draft, I indicated that the pats should, and probably would draft a corner, picking among Wilson, McCourty and Jackson.

Just BTW, what was you analysis the week before the draft? Who did you post that we should pick or that we would pick?

good call, vjc ! i was stuck in the terrance cody , jerry hughes combo trance. i liked the idea of a corner as soon as he was taken . whatever bb does, i'm cool with. i learned the hard way(seymour,terrell).

Yup, in retrospect CB made a lot of sense. Wilhite was just getting killed out there last year. We needed to improve the top of our secondary so guys like Wilhite can sit further down the depth chart, where they have less of a chance of being exposed. We also needed our defense to get off the field on 3rd downs and coverage sacks can happen if your secondary can stick like glue.

Even though Dez Bryant was dropping I never seriously considered him an incumbent Patriot because of the Seymour pick. BB will usually pick the solid defensive prospect over the flashy offensive guy.

And this year BB more than ever appeared to want to go back to his roots - drafting solid character guys, big tough football players, leaders, and improving the team all around from the ground up. BB got him his two tight ends and managed to snag a receiver with the extra 3rd round pick he got from his trades as well as a 2011 2nd which will set us up nicely in 2011 as well (2 1sts and 2 2nds).
