Probably he always wanted to sign, his wife talked him out of it, and then she saw how torn he was about the choice and changed her advice.
If I'm guessing correctly, that's the sign of a good marriage.

heh...I went to grammar school with a kid named Richard Hertz...for real...and we had a teacher named Richard Head too...no lie, I swear...plus there was this rich girl who was unbelievably obnoxious, yet her name was Irmalinda Bogalucci...childhood does have its' share of ups and down alright.
I'm thinking more likely he wanted to avoid the pounding of the NFL and move on to academia, but his wife realized the amount of cash he was potentially passing up and threatened him with a much more severe beatdown than any LB in the NFL would give him if he didn't man up and sign.
