Re: Brandon Spikes - OLB pass rusher

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but on the Patriots website Guyton is currently listed at starting OLB opposite TBC. I know it's just the depth chart in April, but still it's there haha.

And McKenzie starter at ILB

Could Pryor even play 3-4 DE? He's listed as the starter.

That's just the opinion of the Patriots Football Weekly crew, i.e. Perillo, Hart, and Scalavino.

i would like to see guyton play some OLB he's speed would be great as a 3rd down pass rusher. spikes, is a ILB.

so far it looks like the pats are going with the young guys at OLB Jermaine Cunningham, guyton crable, im looking forword to the start of the season.

It's pretty crazy that Spikes' cousin, Takeo, has yet to play in the playoffs for any team in like 12 years. Playing for the Bengals and Bills will do that I guess.

The main thing I expect Brandon to do is make tackles and help other guys make tackles. I think he can do that best from ILB.

Re: Brandon Spikes- OLB Pass Rusher

Did anybody read up on his speed breakdowns?

He was timed on a slow track at 4.95 in the forty BUT his time in the ten yard burst was a stellar 1.5 and 1.48 seconds...this would seem to indicate his value as a blitzer would be from the inside, hitting the gaps.

1.5 puts him tied with the second best time from the wr group......a time put up by a certain taylor price.....

I believe Clay Matthews stunned everyone last year when he hit 1.49 on his split --- much the best.

cj spiller was best at rb with 1.48.

I'm very excited by this defense in 2010.

Yup. I don't see him running the arc. Send him right up the gut where he can be disruptive the quickest. Sure sometimes he'll be blocked, but a little scheme trickery could free him up to get into a QB's face.

And even if he gets blocked, he's a strong enough kid to tie up and provide one less blocker for a lineman or other blitzer. Him getting blocked might mean Mayo comes free on a double ILB blitz, or maybe it forces a guard to shade away from our DT and gives us a 1-on-1 matchup in our favor.

As soon as they took Spikes I said to myself that everyone was off about him playing inside. Because of his size and determination I figured him for the edge at least part of the time - like on 3rd down when Guyton can play inside for coverage. And what of Tyrone? What if Mackenzie materializes and can still run after blowing out his knee? Then he and Spike(s) will flip flop off the edge and the middle, one of them might even just stay outside all the time. Tell me that Spikes isn't as fast or faster than AD and I won't believe you. I bet you in game timing he's faster than TBC, and TBC had 9+ sacks last year. If Tyrone is healed the Pats could suddenly have a strong LB corps. Let's not even get greedy and suppose Crable finally arrives...yow.
