Who the traded picks turned into

Is there other factual errors aside from in the original 22 Slot Dez Bryant was selected? He went 24 if I recall

If we had drafted Dez Bryant, this draft would have been a bonanza.

Dez Bryant with Moss and those 2 TE's would have made this offense flat out scary.

BB chose to go down a different path, it was odd and definately a head scratcher especially where we already had Butler and Bodden, so we'll see how that pans out.

In the end the comparision of what we did get with the Dallas trade would be :

McCourty/Price OR Dez Bryant

We'll see how this all pans out and see if this was a major blunder on BB's part soon enough.

Stop with the Dez Bryant stuff. The guy is too dumb to fit into the Pats system. I do admit it would be great for this board for the next few years for the Belichick bashers because they could kill him for drafting a bust. I already hear that the Cowboys are pairing down their playbook to plays like "Run to the hot blonde cheerleader and cut in".

We have seen far too many WR go bust here because they were not smart enough to pick up the playbook like Joey Galloway, Chad Jackson, Doug Gabriel, and Donald Hayes. Bryant's physical talents would be wasted here because he wouldn't be able to get on the same page as Brady because I question if he could figure out his presnap reads and make the proper route adjustments.

Belichick spent a lot of time with Bryant. I am sure he tested him with game film just like he tested McCourty. Based on rumors of Oklahoma State pairing down their playbook for him, him forgetting to bring the proper cleats to the game, and a very poor Wonderlic Score (16); I am sure he failed the game film portion of the interview and Belichick didn't want to go through Chad Jackson 2.0.

Personally, I think the only guy you can really complain about them passing up was probably Odrick. He fits the Pats' system while Bryant doesn't. He has knocks against him too though.

Again, Bryant could turn into a superstar in Dallas, but it wouldn't mean he would here. Dallas' offense is less complicated than the Pats' and they rely more on Romo just throwing the ball all over the field rather than a lot of presnap reads. In fact, Romo isn't the most cereberal QB himself and the system is dumbed down because of it.

I absolutely agree with you, however, I think the people that are STILL crying about Bryant don't have the attention span to read that. Your words will be lost on the people that need to hear them the most.

I think people should consider that passing up this or that player in the first round... this is a strategy the Pats have about accumulating picks in the 2-3 rounds that is almost automatically successful.

Look at last year. The Patriots took a lot of heat for passing up Clay Matthews. But look at what the haul is from that trade, since we can finally add it up.

It works out to be Clay Matthews to the Packers and sixth-round LB Travis Goethel to the Raiders (from this year's draft) for Darius Butler, Brandon Tate, Julian Edelman, and Rob Gronkowski.

Matthews is a good player and it would be great to have him. But the Pats' haul will almost certainly turn out better; I think it's already about even, given we got a starting corner and a productive wideout already in the deal. If Gronkowski plays up to its billing at all, it's a wipeout in our favor-- and that's even considering Matthews panned out great for Green Bay, meaning that in that sense it was the worst possible outcome for the Pats and they still probably won the trade.

This year's deal turns out to be Bryant to the Cowboys and A.J. Edds to the Dolphins in return for Devin McCourty, Taylor Price, and Aaron Hernandez. We just have to see how it works out, but I like the odds there. Moreover I'm not sure New England trades 89 to Carolina for the 2011 #2 without having that Cowboys third-rounder.

Look at the second-round deal, too. They did a deal that basically goes like this:

LB Daryl Washington to the Cardinals; New England gets Brandon Spikes, Zoltan Mesko, and a 2011 #2.

I'm not sure Spikes won't turn out to be better than Washington all by himself.

The people who whine about passing up this or that star player don't realize that it's the hype over star power that makes lopsided deals like this possible. Just like fans, teams fall in love with players and give up too much to get them. So long as your team drafts at least decently -- in other words, Devin McCourty plays at least in the ballpark of a first-round corner -- you can't lose. Especially when you add the contract disparity into the picture. The other factor is that when you have a stable coaching situation, i.e. a coach like Belichick who isn't afraid of losing his job, he can steal from a coach willing to mortgage next year for this year. It's really a great strategy. You can quibble with who the Pats pick, but not with the strategy I think.

GREAT post, I'm soooo happy we finally went back to drafting smart, physical "football players" as opposed to guys who look good in shorts (see Jackson, Chad; Watson, Ben; Maroney, Laurence)

The Patriots won Super Bowls by having excellent players. They didn't win Super Bowls just by having a bunch of "ok" guys. Richard Seymour wasn't gotten by trading down to the 25th pick.

Both types of players are important.

More "insight" from the Douche Awry

Did you read Rob's post?

Seymour was drafted 6th. BB moved up to get Warren and Wilfork. Did you notice he has moved up for defensive lineman?

Are aware that defensive line tends to not play wide receiver?

Now for some reality:

Wide receivers are the toughest position to project from the draft.

BB was "burned" by Jackson and Bethel Johnson. I can think of four different interviews where he has stated he is uncomfotable with this and will prefer veterans at the position (Hello Welker/Moss)

On NFLN it was noted that the Dex Bryant playbook will only be a few inches. The Cowboy playbook and personnel are dumb enough for him.

Are you saying you think Dez Bryant is the WR equivalent of a Richard Seymour?

No, and I have no idea where you got that from a general statement.

Because that's what it seemed like you were saying, to me, which is why I asked the question.

But Bryant wasn't even mentioned in my post.

Most of the people on the boards that are complaining about the Pats moving down in the 1st wanted them to take Bryant. I thought you were one of those.

It was just a question.

as you can see in Patsfaninpittsburgh's post, he/she also thought you were referencing Bryant.

This is kind of funny because when the Pats were actually winning those Bowls, the main story was about how they managed to do it with a bunch of blue collar guys and not a bunch of blue chip players.

A lot of their "excellent" players certainly didn't start out that way...

Douche is fundamentally correct about the fact we had excellent players.

It's also legit for the Bryant crowd to question if the playbook is too limiting and we have to pass on excellent talent like Bryant.

Still, it's pretty obvious the WR's have a pretty specific intelligence criteria for our current system. Obviously, Bryant didn't measure. Time to move on.

Fantastic analysis. This is one of the better posts I've read on Patsfans.
