Patriots sign Gerard Warren

Different teams, different circumstances. DE was clearly this defense's Achilles heel. So far it's seen JAGs thrown at the position. However, I suspect BB knows this and will fill with a capable body before Week 1.

I'd argue that OLB was the Achilles heal, but that's not really relevant.

Regardless, the best defense in the league starts a JAG at one of their DE spots. So if BB thinks Lewis is stout enough to play on running downs, a rotation of Lewis/Wright/Pryor/Deadrick/Brace (?) isn't bad.

The issue last year was that they had no one at that spot who could stop the run worth a damn.

...and the DE hole still isn't filled.
The DE hole only exists for early/running downs, since we seem to be all set for passing situations (Ty Warren/Wright/Pryor/Lewis/Gerard Warren et al inside; TBC, Ninkovich, Crable, Cunningham outside). Perhaps the plan is to go with a base three man line of Warren/Wilfork/Brace. I know Brace got pushed around a bit at nose against the Bills, but maybe he's had a nice offseason and BB thinks he can stuff the run from the RDE spot.

Tossing another name into the hat to start at RDE.

Did Mike Wright Die?!?! Seriously he has got to be the most underrated player on our team.

It's a freakin' FLYER, people. What's to hate? See if BB can get something out of him, then let him go. Who cares?

two smart things you said this week.... People its a chance to have a proven vet at a d line spot... get a clue....

I like Wright too, but I think the memory of the Ravens running at will in his direction has left a bad taste in the mouth if many. Replacing Guyton with Spikes or McKenzie on running downs could help alleviate the problem, but a better run defender at RDE also couldn't hurt.

Mike Wright is a fine player. Good interior rusher. Good pursuit guy. Good and getting his body in there. I'm glad he is part of the D-line rotation.

However, by his own admission he has problems with double teams and he does tend to wear down. He just isn't a stout D-lineman. Hes just not a Ty Warren type player. Thats not his game.

We're better inside against the run, having added Lewis and Warren.

Good move, taking a flyer on a guy who might be able to play early downs at RDE and help shore up the run defense. Worst case scenario we cut him, I don't see why people are complaining just because he's not a pro bowler.

Warren and Lewis are both good veteran pickups. I'm looking forward to seeing how they fare.

Not getting this at all. The guy is old.

Wasn't he drafted the same year as Seymour?

He's a JAG - but one who might have a spark of pride and an eagerness to take advantage of a final chance to make a mark. If anyone can bring that out in him it's Belichick.

If he can't hes gone. No risk here.

Lets take all of the Oakland retreads, when Thomas gets cut I would be ok with Greg Ellis at DE/OLB providing his body holds up.

I think this is a significant signing. Warren started all 32 games the past 2 years with the Raiders. He's a load and on some plays is a total beast. If the Pats can get in his head he could be immense for us.

Well, your memory isnt exactly crystal clear then, because aside from one run gaining 3 yards a carry isnt running all over anyone, and Wrightplayed like 60% of the snaps that day, so I don't think he can be isolated as the cause of losing the game. I dont remember for sure, but I dont think he was even in on the first play TD, but I could be wrong.

I dont know. Warren played DT next to Seymour at DE last year, played 770 snaps to Seymours 802. Had 2 less sacks than Seymour and had 25 tackles, 10 assts to Seymours 30/17.
The guy has started 128 of 135 career games in a 9 year career.
Why is he a slouch?

Oh, btw in 9 years Seymour averages 4.7 sacks a season and Warren 3.5.
